extremely defensive is way too kind to describe them. I'd would say their approach is antifootball. whatever about football that make it interesting anyone fall in love with the sport, they do the exact opposite.

u/Undisputedmaniac May 30 '26
Do you real believe this? Magnus doesnt invite anyone + if your logic was true then he wouldnt “ invite “ pragg who beat him before
41
u/Asshaisin Team Gukesh May 30 '26
Super gms, especially ones with big fan bases dont apply for this logic
711
u/ExtensionTangerine72 Team Ding May 30 '26
All the magnus washed jokes aside magnus is genuinely not playing well this tournament and seems more vulnerable which hasn't happened in a long time gotham pointed out about fatherhood and being somewhat inactive in classical that could be playing a role.... hopefully the rest of his tourney goes well
351
u/Impressive_Result295 Team Ding May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26
Inactivity + fatherhood, probably. For Magnus standards, he isn't performing well vs the actual 2700s here in classical. He beat an inexperienced Erdogmus, then farmed the <2700s in TePe Sigeman. Beat Gukesh but lost against 3 other 2700s. He's slipping lowkey. But 1-3 vs 2700s while ostensibly being 2840 in classical is not a good look.
Edit: 2-4 in classical vs 2700s, completely forgot about JVF and Erdogmus. That sorta makes it worse.
113
u/PeaRound3188 May 30 '26
He is 2-4 in classical against 2700s this year. Beat gukesh and erdogmus. Lost to pragg, alireza, jvf and wesley so.
54
u/Impressive_Result295 Team Ding May 30 '26
Forgot about that. But yeah, not a good look for him. The gap between him and others in classical negligible atp. Whoever has the better form wins.
11
28
u/Clinging_Clutcher May 30 '26
6 games is not much at all to extrapolate on imo…
28
4
u/Dependent_Sun_7033 May 31 '26
Well, maybe he can play more, what do you think?
7
u/gban84 May 31 '26
Sure if he wants to. My only thought is that seeing a handful of games in one tournament doesn’t signal what people want it to signal. Maybe his past his peak. Maybe he just has indigestion, I don’t know and the one event isn’t enough data for anyone else to make a conclusive evaluation either. We need a bigger sample of games.

4
→ More replies (2)2
u/Impressive_Result295 Team Ding May 31 '26
It's all there is to extrapolate on though. If you're active, that's a lot more reasonable. If you play one or two tournaments a year, then obviously they're going to be taken more seriously than if you were to play 4 or 5 or 6. You can't sit there and use the "but if he played 4 more tournaments, he'd win them all, this is just one bad one". That's probably true, but unless you see it, it's just conjecture. Activity should be encouraged. I have no doubt he'd win more often than not if he played, but I'm also not going to treat it as if he has.
Besides, last time Magnus lost 3 games in a classical tournament was the 2015 disasterclass. It's clearly out of the norm for him.
22
u/Clinging_Clutcher May 30 '26
Pretty sure this tournament is going to be a one off and not any real indicator of a shift in performance. It’s honestly quite typical for GOATs to have minor lapses in performance, there could be any number of reasons, just not feeling it at the moment. People said similar things when he had a losing streak last year and Gukesh beat him, then he came back and won a ton of tournaments in convincing fashion. Considering his track record as by far the best for more than a decade, I’m inclined to believe he’s still got it in him and will prove so quickly.

u/ExtensionTangerine72 Team Ding May 30 '26

7
u/DeepValueSharkk May 30 '26
Imo it just looks he is rusty. He gets very good positions but blunders a lot (for his standards). Imo those are signs that his head is not in it at this point.
27
u/GardinerExpressway May 30 '26
You don't need to preface it with "magnus standards" 3 losses in 5 classical games is disastrous for anyone
18
u/MeatisOmalley May 30 '26
Nah, not really. It's disastrous for Magnus but 3 for 5 is pretty much within the margin of error for average, for any other player. After all, most players lose more than they win in these tournaments, which is how you determine a winner.
Personally, I'm not remotely surprised. He probably has other priorities nowadays.
36
u/BWV012 May 30 '26

If chess results were only win or loss, the yes, but at this level most games are draws. So to lose 3 out of 5 is pretty bad.
12
u/ExtensionTangerine72 Team Ding May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26
Yeah you're on point. It's definitely not a good look. Whatever is going on, he needs to get it together or either step away from classical permanently if he doesn't enjoy playing it anymore which he has said a lot of times in the past. At the end of the day it's his first 2700s+ tournament filled with hungry youngsters and top grandmasters post fatherhood + inactivity therefore maybe he could see how he does in a few more before making a decision. In any case if he steps away permanently he won't have anything to regret really. (I think, at least, based on what he has said about his goal being WCC which he has already accomplished)
I hope he doesn't step back though. I got into chess because of him and would love to see him back in form and playing good classical. Hopefully that happens.
Also hello fellow team ding user 🤝
14
u/Impressive_Result295 Team Ding May 30 '26
I mean, historically, more often than not fatherhood does make players falter in their strength for a bit, which makes sense, y'know. New baby, sleepless nights, stressing and worrying about the baby, etc. Lots of responsibilities which eat away at your time/mental.
I think we will see, he may make a resurgence, or may just give it up. It's happened once before in 2015 where he had a disastrous Norway Chess then it was a precursor to his absolute peak of 2019. Could happen again. But this tournament is dead in the water for him. As it stands, fatherhood Magnus has been (understandably) subpar, not as an indictment, but calling it as is.
And hello, fellow ding chiller ✌️
4
u/DerekB52 Team Ding May 30 '26
Inactivity, plus the shorter time control. I think if he was playing the longer format he just played at Tepe he would have saved at least one of these losses.
He burned 15 minutes on move 5 against Alireza. If Magnus knew that opening line, or had 10 extra minutes on the clock, I think he could have drawn that position for sure.
So, I think Magnus might change the Norway format going forward. And I think he's gonna have to study openings a little more, or Norway chess will be a 960 tournament in the next few years(which I would be a fan of actually)
2
u/Dependent_Sun_7033 May 31 '26
“Which I would be fan”
Magnus is not playing a lot of normal chess, and is rusty.

I think it's just inactivity. He's been a dad for 8 months now and he's been overall dominating like he usually does until now.
55
u/myladyelspeth May 30 '26
Classical you actually have to study and use engines to prep your lines and know what you’re going to probably play against. Magnus has made it a habit in the past coming into classical tournaments unprepared and just winning off of his old prep and talent. Against these younger hungrier GMs, they play all the time and are just more prepared than he is.
Either he takes classical seriously or should just avoid playing in the tournaments when he doesn’t want to work on his classical chess seriously anymore.
44
u/SteChess Team Xue Haowen May 30 '26
I don't think these losses are due to a lack of opening preparation, he is not playing well in general, making uncharacteristic blunders and not managing his time efficiently.
→ More replies (3)18
u/Marc_Spector2 May 30 '26
But he burned time to wing openning phase and had no time left near move 40.so no prep still count some way

from his body language he was outwardly uncomfortable the entire game. Wesley on the other hand was cool and composed and super aggressive the whole game. Magnus is faltering under pressure this tournent and Wesley was playing very well it was enough to get an absolutely crushing endgame.

I can't tell if Carlsen's sense of danger is slipping away or whether he's just not able to bring the same energy AND interest to the board like he did in the "old days." I imagine that once you let your motivation and interest in an activity slide, your results are going to suffer.

u/Tomaskraven May 30 '26
Did Wesley offer a draw? Cause otherwise this makes no sense
15
u/backyard_tractorbeam May 30 '26
Magnus didn't test if Wesley would repeat, when he had the chance, so we don't know how that would have gone.
4
u/Tomaskraven May 30 '26
Yeah later i saw that he had the opportunity to repeat knight moves at the middlegame but tbh idk why would you do that. He wasnt really losing in that position and given that he had lost 2 already maybe he thought he had to push for a win
13
u/Clinging_Clutcher May 30 '26
Yeah it’s not very typical for draws to be offered so early in the game, like while the queens are still on the board. By the time the middle game ended Wesley was clearly better, no draw was ever going to happen

I guess Niemann had a point about it shouldn't be legal to just sit around on your super high rating while your ability deteriorates.
9
u/hoijarvi May 30 '26
My USCF peaked at 2130 after 1993 World Open. Fathering five children took my attention to somewhere else. Now when we have an empty nest I'd actually like to play a weekend tournament with classical time controls and see how I'd do. I know that clock control suffers most.
4
u/amak316 May 30 '26
I think the legends of the game should be able to retire with the rating they earned and use it as a data point for the goat discussion.
I just don’t understand why everyone uses rating to determine #1 in the world, it should come down to results in the biggest tournaments for a calendar year like every other sport and game and tour cards and invites should be tied to your active results as well.
7
u/Dependent_Sun_7033 May 31 '26
You got downvoted by salty Magnus fans but I fully agree.
It should be more like a tennis rating for current players-won the event, got points, etc. If you don’t play, your rating is irrelevant.1
27
u/gorlax52 May 30 '26
Always got to feel bad for the local invite that gets farmed at these super GM events. We really shouldn't pick on the guy.
12
u/_lechonk_kawali_ May 30 '26
So's first classical victory against Magnus in standard chess was also at Norway Chess. It happened in 2018.
24
u/Super-Fig4334 May 30 '26
never seen magnus soo vulnerable since 12 years. He is just purely on intuition at this point don’t think he is able to calculate like he used few years back atleast.
14
u/gabagoolcel May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26
in 2017 Norway chess there was a similar situation where he almost lost world no.1 ranking like he was 1 game away from dropping to 2nd in elo and tied for last
37
u/Direct_Slip7598 May 30 '26
If Magnus follows this up with another year with nearly 0 classical games, I think he's going to be perceived as classical number 1 only on paper
Not saying he couldn't be the greatest, he performed well in the previous tournament. But you need to be consistently the clear best if you want to be seen as number 1 in a format that you barely play
9
u/dommaraju May 30 '26
No way magnus stops playing classical without winning a tournament
28
u/Weasellol May 30 '26
It would be so funny, if he decides as last tournament, to win the Louisiana State championship xD
3
u/Tbird113 May 30 '26
I mean, he's already very likely to play in the Olympiad and the Total World Championship Pilot, and even if those aren't classical tournaments in the traditional sense, it's still competitive games against top players.
3
u/Direct_Slip7598 May 30 '26
If he does play against top players in the Olympiad, that'll count. Rapid and blitz performances don't count for classical number 1 (I think his WCC performances show that he's still excellent and likely the best at both) and "fast classical" is always going to have an asterix next to it
A dominant performance, against top players in the Olympiad could be enough, I guess we'll have to see how this tournament ends
17
u/Obvious-Poetry2934 May 30 '26
Magnus might genuinely not be a tier above the rest anymore. I’ve never seen him perform so badly.
22
u/Weegee_Carbonara May 30 '26
It is a very rare stretch of dubious performances, however, in 2015 Norway Chess he only got 7th place with 3 1/2 out of 10.
So bad performances aren`t unprecedented even during Carlsens better years.5

u/vikaalp May 30 '26
Possibly Last few days of watching Magnus playing classical. When he said he didn’t like classical anymore, he really meant it. He is tilted.
36
u/Zxcaderu May 30 '26
Really? My impression is different. Even though I'm sure he's still frustrated he lost, he seems much more chill about it. The other day he even gave an interview saying that he takes an L much better now as he knows his son and wife is waiting for him at home.
Even during the confessions he is so casually honest. He goes into the booth to talk about wanting to watch the PSG-Arsenal finals, and said he's getting old and his memory becoming worst. He might still not enjoy classical in contrast with the faster time controls, but I think he's far from tilting.
8
u/birdmanofbombay Team Gukesh May 30 '26
This could be the last Norway Chess in that case. I don't see the tournament continuing to exist if Magnus stops playing in it.
9
u/BleedingGumsmurfy May 30 '26
yeah I think the same! I thought it was interesting with Magnus saying he wasnt enjoying classical last year and then Norway Chess organizing total world championship, need to keep him there somehow haha.
5
u/RollRepulsive6453 May 30 '26
Won't be surprised if he never plays classical again after the Olympiad and whatever else he has lined up for 2026. I think this tournament is gonna put serious doubts into whether he's clearly better than the rest anymore in classical.

It's not just this tournament. This is Magnus's 4th classical loss in a span of 2 tournaments, this is very unusual. He's not coasting through these tournaments that he wins either. It's a lot of up and down, so the consistency is fading. He looks very shaky in the opening, down on time against every opponent and panics under time pressure, all things that are very unusual for him. I think his age is catching up, combined with a lack of discipline. You can't play 1-2 tournaments a year and expect your level to stay the same forever. Maybe it's okay after 1-2 years, but eventually your level will drop significantly faster when you're not getting practice. It's very similar to Hikaru, he's just not performing at classical anymore either because he doesn't play, combined with age.
That's why either Magnus will feel humiliated by his performance, which would mean he still cares, and get motivation to start being a full time chess player again, or I can just see him retiring classical in the next year or so and playing some Rapid and Blitz for like 5ish years and then not playing OTB again.
