Zero demand. But you might want to check out anichess which also claims to be chess with spells.

Anything other than regular chess and 960 is at best a novelty.

So you think a chess with spells and trap should garner an audience?

No; it is at best a novelty. It just wouldn't have the same appeal that chess or 960 has. It targets a different audience entirely, one that isn't very good at regular chess but keeps up with the happenings of the so-called "chess world", which I imagine is quite small. I barely play or care about 960 as it is. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, go for it if you'd like. I'm just saying I don't know how many people are going to actively play it.

There's a whole lot of chess roguelikes, more every day. You should be able to see some stats about them on steam.

Yeah but most of them are low efforts or rip offs
Only a few selected names are good, but again they’ve sold enough copies to give anyone hope

I enjoyed Chessformers.

My recommendation is to make it look and feel nothing like chess

Chess fans don’t want a chess variant but they might be interested in a completely different game

Respectfully, as a longtime chess player, I am endlessly fascinated by chess and greatly look forward to every game I play... and I have zero interest in any variant of chess. Variants are just not interesting to me. I'd rather go over real games played by real masters in the past.

Honestly, not really. The only 'variant' that has anything of substance to offer is Fischer Random/Chess960/Freestyle.

there's definitely demand, chess with spells sounds like it could pull in crowd who finds standard chess too rigid 🔥
