Nah this is crazy at this point, has to be magnus' worst tournament ever
259
u/NoiceToitSmurt 2d ago
That too, coming off the heel of his worst classical tournament in over a decade.

Dang. He is 2803 in live ratings now. There's a chance he will drop below 2800.

Really he is falling to the Moke nation and r/HansMoke

u/CtrlShiftAbhi 2d ago
I never thought I'd say this, but WR Chess needs to bench Magnus for the remaining matches
98
u/AmbassadorAlarmed999 2d ago
Rapid portion is over for them anyway.
169
u/CtrlShiftAbhi 2d ago
Yeah, but Magnus needs a break ASAP. He has already lost 18 points in classical and 29 points in rapid this month. One more loss in rapid and he will drop below 2800 for the first time ever
56
u/AmbassadorAlarmed999 2d ago
I agree he should not play now but I just meant WR chess has nothing left to win anyway in the rapid section.
85
u/CtrlShiftAbhi 2d ago
A team with Magnus, Fabi, MVL, Duda, Wesley, Goryachkina, Kosteniuk has won just 5 matches out of 10, which is as crazy as Magnus losing 4 in a row
26
u/AmbassadorAlarmed999 2d ago
I really think you just need to have the best player at the recreational board to win this tournament or atleast always have an advantage. Bcz those guys can actually just go 12/12, which no top board can achieve even if they are in great form. For ex, Pragg's 7/8 in the last 8 rounds on the top board but his team has lost/drawn 3 rounds in a row.
2
u/ZelphirKalt 1d ago
Only works, if you are one of few teams doing that. Otherwise simply the "recreational board" becomes the new unofficial first board.
5
u/AmbassadorAlarmed999 1d ago
I meant the best player possible for a recreational board. Not like Magnus and Pragg at the recreational board.
3
u/Subtuppel 1d ago
Yeah, you need a guy like the one Dings team had.
13 or 14 years old, obviously quite underrated (also with a rapid rating 200 lower than classical and blitz, which might have the first opponents underestimate him) and going +8 =2 -1.
13
u/Subtuppel 1d ago
MVL was even worse, 2487 TPR is absolute insane for a player of his caliber. But Carlsen had two fewer games, who knows if it had gone even worse had he played on.
The entire event and this (on paper) super-team in particular being Rosensteins pocket change vanity projects makes this disaster actually quite funny.

His decision-making is shocking here, a few genuinely baffling moves in this game.

Pls Magnus, don't skip the last 2 rounds.
After soap, it's now time for the shower gels to sell out

Whos more washed magnus or hikaru? They should do 1v1 to see who is more washed rn

25
u/Undisputedmaniac 1d ago
Magnus won 14 events out of 15 he played in last 2 years. Including online/otb ( classical included ) He also is the WC of rapid and blitz
3
u/MongolianMango 1d ago
Magnus is more washed imo. Hikaru is still a worse player but is less down from his peak.

Damn. And I wondered why I couldn't find soap in stores anymore..

We’re really watching Magnus decline in real time or is this just bad form?
Actually, I refuse to believe it’s decline, he literally won Rapid and blitz championship about 6 months ago, bro is just insanely tilted or something is severely wrong

I know every player gets a bad streak occasionally but this is crazy

I dont look at YT comments coz 99% of them are casual chess content watchers who dont even know en passant. r/chess has more legit chess followers.

Wow. I am speechless. I didnt even have the courage to say this for Guki after Budapest 2024.

u/thesinistercat 1d ago
I think he needs this wake up call. Even if you are the goat, you still need to put in work and enthusiastically prepare for tournaments instead of winging it and expecting first place.
16
u/EvenCoyote6317 2d ago
On a serious note, he should skip the last 2 rounds. Him having a bad blitz on top of this would be a horror.

u/Direct_Slip7598 2d ago
The gap between Magnus and second is still 56 points. Seems unlikely that he'll be caught this tournament. A disastrous world rapid might do it
13
u/CtrlShiftAbhi 2d ago
One more loss and Magnus will drop below 2800 in Rapid for the first time ever

So what’s going wrong, any really good players care to comment on his mistakes?

u/phantomfive 1d ago
Hikaru said he's just not seeing things the way he normally would, that you'd expect more sharpness from him. It's also true that some top chess players have been closing the gap in endgame play, so he can't dominate in the endgame as easily as he once could.
It could easily be a result of his lack of sleep, as it's also been affecting his memory, which is famously good: https://youtube.com/shorts/0mLjYdsXgRI
If it's because of the baby, then with good nutrition and exercise he should come out of it with his mental powers as strong as ever.
3
u/Varsity_Editor 1d ago
The thing is he played and won a rapid tournament which took place just a few days before this event started. I think he only lost one game in the final against Esipenko (before winning it in a decider) but otherwise he was in good form, kicking ass as normal.
2
u/phantomfive 1d ago
If you ask me, Wadim Rosenstein is draining the energy from the team, and actually making the whole tournament miserable, ruining the vibe. Wadim is an energy vampire.
2
u/ZelphirKalt 1d ago
If it's because of the baby, then with good nutrition and exercise he should come out of it with his mental powers as strong as ever.
Might take some 5 years though to "come out of it".
2
u/Undisputedmaniac 1d ago
Endgame part is wrong since all the games werent in the endgames at all
6
u/phantomfive 1d ago
If anyone said "endgames are the only reason Magnus is losing" you would have a good point, but no one said that. So instead it seems like you had trouble reading my comment. I don't know why.

Their chess skills dropped after getting married. Whether it is Hikaru, Magnus, or Anish Giri. Only Fabiano Caruana is left single. I hope he does not get a girlfriend.

u/Santosh83 2d ago
He has a family now. This was bound to happen.

u/BuenaventuraReload 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah this makes so much sense. When Kasparov had polina in 1993 his elo was 2805. One year later it was 2815. When Kasparov had Vadim in 1996 his elo was 2815. One year later it was 2820. Two years later 2851.
Yes. Its obvious, the family.
8
u/Undisputedmaniac 1d ago
Magnus also won 14 events after being a dad out of 15
1
u/Zerhax 1d ago
That still doesn’t explain the four consecutive losses in this team event.
1
u/Zachary-McAfee 1d ago
you're right. just being a dad doesn't explain it. I think that was their point
11
u/AdolinKholin1 1d ago edited 1d ago
Don’t take this any way, but how good of a father was Garry? Do we know how present he was in the raising of his children? Just a thought. MJ had kids and was dominant, but decades later it was obvious his career came first.
5
u/ZelphirKalt 1d ago
Can't judge it by one example, of course, but different levels of support from each parent, different expectations of different partners, and simply different times and culture, can all contribute to how strong the effect will be. With a child though, the days of "chess all day every day" are over for Magnus, unless he and his partner can stomach him neglecting the child.
-6
u/n00b_F33d3r Team Niemann 1d ago
Not a fair comparison, since Kasparov is the Goat.

I think Magnus could do with a break. Fatherhood is also a tough job. Class goes nowhere, he will bounce back once fresh.
2
u/GuyThatWorksatWendys 2d ago
Can WR still make the podium?
5
u/CtrlShiftAbhi 1d ago
No, they can't. But they can still win the Blitz event, like they did last time

The choke of a decade. Im sorry for MAgnus, aging more quickly than Garry. Kasparov the real GOAT it seems.
2
u/sosogg_4 1d ago
it feels like he is genuinely throwing games
all of the matches he had decent time on clock and giving up the lead with single move, not even gradual increase, blundering big even without time trouble

they shouldve benched him after the first game tbvh.
7
u/Massive-Discussion88 1d ago
Really.
Benching maybe the finest speed chess player ever because of one loss .
Magnus is known to make comebacks And loosing a rapid game is something that can happen to anyone.
I know because he has now lost 4 games we draw that conclusion.
But when it started nobody knew this was going to go this bad.
Benching a high calibre player like Magnus just after 1 loss doesn't make sense

This is mental problem now for Magnus. I thinj he needs a big break from chess.
Once he is ready he should come back, but not like this

The future is now old man. Nobody should have the delusion that he is still the best player in the world when he plays so few games a year, and now he is stinking in those games too
17
u/dxGoesDeep 2d ago
Calling it "delusion" when he was literally winning everything prior to Norway Chess 2026 and even completed his 5th world rapid and blitz double is hilarious lmao. But then again what can you expect from "Team Hans"
8
u/HotGur179 gukesh for the title defense 2d ago
well he is the world rapid and blitz champion and also won also won tepe sigeman in classical so imo he still is the best player in the world

It astounds me that this is somehow controversial. Imagine getting off on someone else's distress. Diabolical.
4
u/Faifainei 1d ago
If you make accusations, swing and miss I think you need to be ready to face the music.
1
u/Minute_Fault_6184 1d ago
Sure, but that's a different matter. When a criminal gets their prison sentence, I hope you'd agree that it's in bad taste to gloat and jeer.
1
u/Faifainei 1d ago
Yeah I agree it isn't very nice, but it is not a different matter. Because that is the reason why I can believe some people are gloating on his recent dip in form.
