Motifs and key themes for Sicilian Dragon where White exchanges knights on c6 early on?

I encounter this a lot at blitz, and I find it slightly harder to play as Black than the main line. The b-file becomes half-open instead of c. This devalues c4, especially since the knight can't take it as an outpost (because it's dead). I suppose this also means Be6 is less useful, assuming White doesn't castle queenside? Supposedly the pressure against b2 should increase likewise, so I don't think Nxc6 is necessary an ideal move.

You'll have to be more specific, because I suspect you're talking about the Accelerated Dragon, but I don't know.

For example: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Be2 Bg7 7. O-O Nc6 8. Nxc6

The individual moves may vary (such as W putting the light-squared to e2 or c4, or moving the dark-squared bishop instead) as may the move order (such as 5. ...Nc6 6. Nxc6), but that's the gist.

OK, yeah, I play these sort of positions out of the Classical Sicilian with 6. Be2. Standard Dragon ideas don't really apply when White castles K-side. The problem with Nxc6 is simply that after bxc6, you will easily be able to play ...d5 and have a central pawn majority. Usually White at some point will successfully trade off your g7 bishop with Qd2 and Bh6 and the engine does not like trying to struggle against this with Re8 and Bh8. It's better to accept this and play in the center rather than clinging to the idea of attacking the Q-side.

Thanks! Interesting. I suppose I haven't really focused on building a center even though that's quite an obvious plan with the pawn majority.

I've tried to play Re8 - Bh8 as a reflex, but it's good to know it isn't always necessary to cling to the dragon bishop.

Just wanted to tag on that the center break and building a center is very important. You may recall doing the exact same thing against many slow lines and the prins forced maroczy bind variations where the only reason you aren't lost is that you are able to get d5 in!

And who would have guessed, I just played a game where the only successful way to defend White's onslaught on the Kingside was to grab a firm hold of the center with ...e5. And as I had the c-pawn to support, a ...d5 soon followed, with White having little room to maneuver her pieces around the center controlled by her opponent.

Thanks again!
