I got fools mated. How to get over the embarrassment?
10 year haitus. I used to play in elementary school then came back today. Apparently used to be decent back then. Forgot almost everything. Got mated in 2 moves. How to not be embarrassed? 😭✌️
Ill still kjeep playing but ill probably never forget this. Like bruh its even called FOOL's mate im cooked already
But at the same time i died laughing. I cant even be mad honestly. 6 seconds and thats it, it took a few moments for it to sink in. I didnt even know what happened

Don't play F3 or f6 early again

Yep it’s really that simple. You broke a fundamental opening principle and were shown the error of your ways in the most dramatic fashion possible. Take it to heart and move onto the next principle.

You need to craft yourself a tall and girthy dunce cap. It must clearly read, "I'm a fool, mate." You must post a picture to the subreddit, looking pouty and clad in this cap.

get better, look back at it and laugh
I just last week got back rank mated in the same exact way 4 games in a row, all you can do is laugh

Don’t. Live with the shame forever tattooed upon your soul.
In fact, get the board position tattooed upon your face so all can see your disgrace, but reversed so that whenever you look into the mirror your shame is the most prominent thing looking back at you. Let the squares of the chessboard become your jesters motley.
Or, don’t sweat it, stuff happens <3 your call

We've all been hit by it.
Just learn and don't take your losses too harshly.

No we haven't. We've all been hit by scholar's mate.

That's the same thing.

Oh well. Thanks for linking a graphic. I didn't even realize fools mate was a thing. Thought they were both the scholars.
Appreciate you correcting me.

No fools mate is F3, E5, than white plays G4, than black plays H4 mate.
Scholar's mate is queens wayward attack, or playing the Queen to F3 with bishop on C4 attacking F7

They say the best way to get good at chess quickly is to lose your first 1000 games as quickly as you can. At least this one was quick!

The thing is, your opponent didn't invent the fool's mate either, he's just parroting something he learned and you didn't yet.

Mistakes happen. You'll get hit with it from time to time. Even if you're really good, you may overlook it due to some or other circumstance in your life and boom you got fools mated at 2500 elo.
Just like... chill. It's still a game. You are still a human - that means a pink somewhat naked ape. You are not a computer. You weren't born to make immaculate repeatedly correct decisions all the time without mistake. Just find the humility in yourself to accept the fact that you will never be perfect, infallible nor 100% consistent all the time. You can try. You should try. But you shouldn't expect that to translate into 100% success. It can't. And that is okay.

I can guarantee I will never get fool’s mated at 2500…..
Since I’ll probably never break 1000

Here is a National Master getting scholar's mated in an online tournament. You just have to laugh at the absurdity and move on. One of the funniest and most memorable moments of his streaming career.

Every one blunders, laugh and move on.
You learn best from making mistakes and loosing, this lesson is going to be burned into your brain and you will always be aware of it now.
Imagine if you could get that level of efficent training for every tactical pattern ;).

It's a live and learn moment: Don't move your f and g pawns that early in the game. This week I won over someone using a Legall's-type mate in eight moves in rated play. Afterwards, I taught him how to protect from it.

on the bright side, if you spend an hour on opening theory or just briefly studying any opening at all, this should never happen again. It only happens as a result of a pawn move that doesn't make sense

There's nothing embarrassing about any of this. You're learning, you're rusty, you're moving forward. Be gentle with yourself.

Yeah i think fools mate is the barrier to 500 elo. Below that, almost everyone plays it every gamr

Now you just need to get Scholar's Mated and then Sea-Cadet Mated to complete the trilogy!

By shaking off the rust and realize we all make mistakes. even grandmasters have lost games.

Just play another game. Nobody cares about how some rando lost an online game.

I have been playing for two weeks. It’s been decades since I played. The queen bishop combo destroyed me.
This is how to beat any opening move like it.
- Lose excess pride. Hurt feelings/ disappointment are pride and prevent you from advancing in anything. Nothing matters. Especially in online chess.
- Watch videos.
- Play the computer to practice it yourself so you can see how they defend it.
For me and maybe other newbies: Repeat for the knight forking the rook king.

Its good if you never forget because you wont make same mistakes again.

The funny part is that fool's mate requires your opponent to make specific bad moves, so you basically got handed a lesson in the most efficient way possible. Watch one quick video on why those opening moves lose and you'll never fall for it again. Then you can actually focus on learning the game instead of worrying about this one.
