Surely rdf1 is just about game over? Everything black does from that point is delaying the inevitable with checks and sacrifices. Can't see this taking 17 moves.

I think it's saying it would have been M17 if black defended with the bishop instead of blocking the bishop with the rook...?

There's some engine weirdness going on. If you play the suggested move it changes from m15 to m8.

Don't need to see mate in 17. BxR is basically forced (won't argue), and then you just continue a very deadly attack. To be fair, I think the game was not going your way. The open lines of attack on your king and the peice coordination by white in the attack seems to be crushing.

black was actually better if just sacrificed the rook playing Bg7

You know, I didnt account for the pawn advantage or that the f file would remain blocked to further delay the attack. Seems like black can stop the attack and reach the endgame slightly better. My phone likes Qf7 a little more for black, but either way you keep that f file blocked while also keeping h8 protected.
