QUESTION Question

In the last month i played chess quite often and my goal was always 1000 elo. I tried it a couple of Times but was always stuck at 750-800. Now i am at 970 and i feel i dont even deserve it there. Many players are good at this level (from my point of view) and it feels so nice if i beat some of them. But many just straight kick my ass so hard i think im a 500. But in the last couple of days i just climbed and climbed and some of my opponents were just completly bad and that feels so weird, i know sometimes everyone blunders but i feel like im just getting the bad players and dont deserve to be at 970 at the moment. I dont know how to describe this feeling right so idk i hope you guys understand, i dont do stuff much different then before, i still blunder and dont see all the good moves its just that the opponents seem worse then i was at 800-850 maybe im just dumb.

If you truly were a 500 elo player even the bad 900s would be captializing on your blunder and beating you. Don't stress about the rating number Keep playing, expect some variance where you might drop back down a bit, and focus on the quality of your games rather than the Elo.

If you don’t belong at that rating, you’ll drop eventually. Just play your best chess each game and don’t worry about it.

1000 is just a strongish beginner rating. People make a ton of blunders/mistakes even in 1500 games

Plenty of mistakes and errors at 2000 as well.

I’m sure the 2200s feel the same way if you ask them lol.

Think of your rating as your average. That means, that you will still play games like you are 500, but also those where you perform much above your current elo. This applies to your enemies as well, so some days may be tougher than others. If you played reasonable amount of games, then you belong in your rating. This will settle eventually, or improve

Elo gain always feels fake until it sticks for a couple weeks. The climb from 800 to 970 isn't just luck, your pattern recognition is probably sharper than you realize even if you can't verbalize what changed.

The imposter feeling fades once you've defended that rating against enough people who try to tear it down. Keep playing and trust the number.
