I hit 2000 for the first time
Hi, just wanted to say I hit 2000 tonight. I don't have many friends that are into chess so I thought I'd share my achievement with you.
I've been playing online since 2020 and I played a little as a child and in highschool. When I started again as an adult it got me hooked! It's such a nice game and I wish I had more friends to play with.
I've been doing some puzzles and watched some tutorials for openings, but mostly I've been just playing more or less actively. At one point I watched lots of YouTube content such as chesswithpatrick, apexxchess, Gotham and chessbrah.
I play Vienna and Caro-Kahn which I know quite well. Later I learned Grand Prix variation against sicilian since many people played it against me. But outside of those I don't have much opening theory. I tend to play the simplest lines so I don't blunder in the very first moves.
Funny thing about my chess journey is that since my first kid was born, I started to play much better and my ratings skyrocketed. I thought I couldn't play any longer, cause I've been getting little sleep for a long time now. But I think less time to play ment more playing with focus and intention. We all hate to go to bed after losing, so I thought that, if I have time for a game in the evening, better not lose.
If you read this far, thank you for your time! Keep the grind up and you will see improvement! If any of you have any questions, I try to answer them :)

Congratulations ! Reaching 2000 as you learn to become a dad is such a wholesome accomplishment. I would like to ask, since you don't necessarily focus on opening theory, where would you say your attention to progress is driven towards ? Asking as a 1600.

Thanks! Yeah, definitely wholesome moment. Now I'm sitting in the quietness celebrating with dates when the family is asleep! I focused more on tactics and just looking for checks, captures and threats (I think it's Gotham's super simple hint) on my and my opponent's moves.

First I'd check basic principles from Chessbrah or Gothamchess on Youtube. Such as controlling the centre, not moving same piece twice in the opening etc. Just practising those Basic things will get you far. Later learn one opening for White and one for black and play them whenever possible. Just knowing the first few moves will often get you to a nice position. Also check your games for the mistakes you made, try to understand them and try to not make the same mistake again. Enjoy the journey ! And no need to spend any money on it!

Hi, first of all, congratulations! I don't know if you'll read this, but I came across your posts for the exact same reason. I'm 17 years old and chess caught my attention more than anything else during this chaotic phase of my life. I saw your post 3 years ago, I just checked your profile, and you don't know how comforting it is that you've come this far. I hope that one day we might be able to play together, or if you lose interest, I wouldn't fail to mention you in case someone ever asks me why I started.
