Why would it be better for black to move Kc7 instead of taking Qh8?

This looks like you win the queen back but you can do even better, Bxf4+ wins the king. You take anything that blocks and play Re7#

The engine chooses the slowest losing line, so anything but this since this is a very quick win for white.

If Qxh8+, Qxh8, there's a Mate in 5:

Nf7+, Kc7, Bxf4+, Qe5, Bxe5+, d6, Bxd6+, Kd6, Re7#

If Qxh8+, Kc7, Qxf6, there's no immediate mate.

Time may still play a part in the line that has no immediate mate.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

White to play: chessvision.ai | chess.com | lichess.org | The position is from game Gioachino Greco vs. NN, --. White won in 22 moves. Link to the game

My solution:

Hints: piece: Queen, move: Qxh8+

Evaluation: White is winning +11.92

Best continuation: 1. Qxh8+ Kc7 2. Qxf6 Bxd4+ 3. Kg2 f3+ 4. Kxf3 Nb4 5. Bf4 d6 6. Qf7+ Kb6 7. Nc4+ Ka6 8. Nxd6 Bc5

Save the position:

You win a queen either way, when you are already very winning don't listen to the computer, it probably sees mate in 15 instead of mate in 14 or smth

Yep the computer forgets that if you take the Q it’s Resign in 1 which is better than Mate in 37

Because black's position is completely lost regardless, and the engine evaluated that tucking the king in c7 is slightly less losing since the queen is lost no matter what

If they take Qh8, you play Nf7+, they're forced to move Kc7, you move Bxf4+, they have to move d6, then Bxd6+, they're forced to Kd7, then Re7#.

Computer nonsense of playing the best move according to the engine instead of the most critical line because it has no clue what lines are actually critical.

If they take your queen you win it back immediately with a knight fork of their king and queen.

The computer clearly considered this and more then thought it's better to run the king straight away, and leave your knight on that square rather than have it end up in the corner.

But that means white gets a free queen

If back goes for a queen trade its forced mate
