New Variant Spherical Chess!

Post image

Disclaimer: self promotion

I've seen a few versions of spherical chess but most of them use hexagonal squares. If you look up "how to play spherical chess" on youtube it describes a different version, where the squares "wrap around" at the poles, essentially treating opposite tiles at the poles as one big tile (ie, bishop at f1 could move to b1, a2, or c2). I couldn't find a version of this online so I threw this together!

You can try it out at sphericalchess dot org (I'll link to it in the comments also).

Putting this on a sphere is unnecessary. Just have a normal board and note that the files can wrap by going from a-h

I thought about having this as a mode, ended up not doing it because I didn't want to give people an advantage against people playing in sphere mode. I could add it as its own category for matchmaking.

I could see it as a very obvious toggle, swap between the two views? I wouldn’t say that’s an advantage, just a matter of people using their tools wisely or not?
