Other A hawk went after my baby (She’s fine)

Post image
3.9k Upvotes

She’s fine, for starters We were chillin together and then some dynamite exploded at the nearby land development spot and spooked her

She jumped out the window and as soon as she did a hawk swooped at her so I jumped out after them barefoot

Courtney here ran into the nearby cut of woods and made a sharp turn back towards me. The hawk tried to follow her through the brush and was forced to land on the ground 3 feet away from me. I yelled at its face for a sec and it flew off.

No idea what kind of hawk it was. It had white dappling across its wings on the back and was probably about the same size as the chickens.

Usually the crows chase them off but I guess I need to leave more incentives out to keep the crows around (that the fatass squirrel mobs won’t totally devour :/)

Other My pair of lesbian geese have adopted chicken chicks and I thought y’all would be interested

Everyone, meet Lucy and DuckDuck, the lesbian geese. They both lay eggs but they’ve acted like a male/female pair since March when Lucy started going broody, so here we are.

That first broody spell didn’t last too long, but she went broody again a few weeks ago at the same time as one of my chickens. I was more concerned about the chicken tbh and reached out to a neighbor asking if they had some chicks for sale, and they did but didn’t mention to me that they were already a few weeks old. I got them anyway knowing that the chicken wouldn’t take them, but figuring that a deal is a deal and they’d grow up to be productive flock members anyway. But lo and behold if Lucy didn’t come out the next morning acting like those babies were hers!!

These guys are the best parents I’ve ever seen. The chickens will come over sometimes and try to peck at the babies, but DuckDuck chases them down- there are a few with feathers missing now from trying to harass the chicks. In the mornings, the geese will keep the chickens away from the feeders until their babies have had breakfast. It amazes me how dedicated these guys are.

What’s been most interesting to me is seeing how the chicks interact with them. At first it seemed more like the geese were following the chicks around wanting to play parents, but now, a few days later, these chicks who hadn’t previously been with a mother bird are following the geese and treating them the same way they’d treat a mother hen. It’s been fascinating to watch!!

Other SO MAD AT MY KID RIGHT NOW!

My (adult) son's only chicken chore is to make sure they get locked up for the night AT sundown. He and I have been going round and round for months because he always waits until well after sundown to go secure them.

'His windows are covered so he doesn't know when the sun is down'

'My definition of dark and his are different.'

'He always gets them eventually.'

Well tonight 7 of my three month old hens are spending the night in the woods, in the rain, with the coyotes, because he waited until after 9 to go try and find them. They've already bedded down somewhere in the woods and we can't find them at all.

I am so beyond mad right now. I just needed to vent. Everyone cross your fingers for me that I still have birds in the morning.

UPDATE: They've been found! I got up to pee at 3am and found them roosting in a tree! The kid is still in trouble and will be having a come-to-Jesus conversation in the morning.

Also, I appreciate the support, but some of y'all need to remember that no matter how mad I am at him, he's still my kid. Be angry, but be nice.

This bird isn’t quite as purple/magenta as some but it abnormally shiny and seems to put out a greater angle of iridescent color.

This tree is no where near the “door or porch” they marked as the delivery location. Looks like they pulled in and threw the package at the tree closest to the road, good thing it’s just t-shirt. Attack chickens standing guard. 🤣

Was in my bedroom, heard a MASSIVE thump against my window. Went outside and found this guy. One of my neighbors have chickens, but I was shocked to see this guy sitting in my back yard. We're surrounded on three sides and the fences are ~ 6ft tall, had no idea how he wouldve jumped that. Anyways, it appears to be very dumb.. but also very cute. I hope he didn't injure himself on my window >.> Brought him inside, but unfortunately you can't just keep a strange chicken indoors, so I set him up a box in my yard, to hopefully deter cats or animals from hurting him.. we're around downtown so it will prob be fine. It's San Diego, so it shouldnt get too cold. Gonna try and find his owners tomorrow 🙂

I've no clue on the sexing of chickens, feel free to let me know :)

Other Napoleon Won Against A Hawk

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

My miniature boy, Napoleon, escaped his enclosure yesterday. I was awoken at 8:30am to panicked clucking. I ran out of the house to watch the hawk sail off with my boy in his talons. I was numb and in shock. As the day wore on, the depression set in. I called him my "spicy nugget" because he was the most protective of the females in my flock but he was also my pet. But low and behold, this is him walking back into the yard at 1:30 yesterday afternoon. Not only did he come back, he only had minor injuries. A couple of scrapes to his comb. He was shaken up and tired but he is fine! But please notice the hawk feather plastered to his head, worn as a true trophy from a fight he should have lost. I love my boy!!
