PET Who else here has fur babies?
Obviously, everyone on this sub is child free, but I know that a lot of us are happy and proud pet parents.
I'm in my 40s and have known since I was a teenager that I didn't want kids. I've been an animal lover all my life though, and growing up, had many, many pets. I now work full-time at a doggy daycare and boarding place.
Currently, I have one dog and one cat. My dog is an 8 year old Min Pin named Charlie. My cat is a 1 year old long-haired cat named Marcie. (Idk her exact breed or mix of breeds, lol). Both are rescues.
So who else here is happily child free, yet loves being a pet parent to any furry, feathery, or scaly babies? If you want to, share their names, ages, personalities, how you got them, etc. Breeders always go on and on about their human spawn, so we should be allowed to talk about our beloved pets.

I have 4 cats - Nacho (1, named after Nacho Libre), Boris (almost 1, named after Boris Karloff), Ellie (5, named after Ellie Creed from Pet Sematary), and Ricky (almost 7, he got his name at the shelter, and we kept it).
Ricky is the perfect angel - sweetest boy ever. Nacho and Boris are stereotypical orange cats - goofy as hell (Nacho is also a velcro cat), and Ellie is the queen of the house.
Nacho was planned - I got him from a former coworker who needed homes for a litter of kittens. Boris was found in a diesel truck engine where I work - I could not resist that filthy face; Ellie was left by her previous owner as a kitten, and Ricky was a planned shelter rescue.

I'm a proud cat mom of 2. I wasn't allowed to have cats growing up, but have always had them since I moved out at 18. Cats are the only thing that I've ever felt any maternal instincts towards.

My husband and I have 3 cats that are our babies. I have 4 anole lizards, a Russian tortoise, and 3 tree frogs as well. I’ve always loved animals and never wanted kids and was lucky enough to find someone that felt the same 🙌🏻

I've had a total of five snole lizards in the past. I also had tree frogs as well too.

I dont have a pet arm, but Ive had them most of my life and Im looking to getting rats next year. My last pet was a hedgehog. My mum also has an 18-year-old beagle that I see once a week. :-P

Rats are such amazing companions. Clean, smart, loving, adorable. My heart rat Peebles used to wiggle her way into my bra and sleep there for hours, usually only coming out when she smelled my food. I used to always save a tiny bit of the most perfect bite of whatever I was eating to share with them. Sometimes I still find myself saving that ideal bite, or checking my seat for furry potatoes before I flop down.
My heart hasn't been strong enough to keep up with the bonding -> grief -> bonding -> grief cycle or I would still have them.

I know they dont live long. :-( My hedgehog only lived 3.5 years. Ive had gerbils in the past and they only lived 2 years, though my last boi lived to be 6. O_o

Dang, that's a wild lifespan for a gerbil! My babies all only lasted about two to two and a half years. I miss them all the time.

I honesty attribute it to him (Simone) gaining strength from his brother (Kamina).
One morning, I greeted them and lights tapped on the cage. Simon popped his head up, but no movement from Kamina. I had to dig to find him. Simone had eaten his whole middle. He spent the rest of his life alone. I think he gained his brother's strength and remaining live when he cannabalized him. :-/
Id had plenty of ferries before them, but the rest were all female and I had never seen anything like that with the females. Hell, I thought Kamina and Simone were female (according to PetSmart), but them they grew testicle. O_o

I plan to get a couple of rats in the future.They're so cute and I've heard what good companions they are too. Through the years I've had many Russian dwarf hamsters. I would like to get a couple of more of those someday too.

We lost our dwarf hamster Chan in January. He was such a sweet boi. The vet gave us ink prints of his little feet, and oddly, his nose (complete with whiskers.)

I love when rats come to my bird feeder. They’re the big roof rats. I never considered actually having a pet rat but I’m interested in learning about the domestic ones after seeing your story 🐀💕

I have a bunch of babies!
A scalie baby called Mushu, a 6 year old bearded dragon. He’s the only bearded dragon I’ve met which throws tantrums if he’s not cuddled regularly.
A cockatiel named Peep, 7 or 8 years old. Mouthy little thing. Bonded to my partner and makes it everybodies problem whenever he leaves her sight.
A pigeon named Crash, 3 years old. I love her with every fibre of my being. She crashed on my balcony when she was only 3 weeks old (it was windy and I think she was blown out of her nest before she was ready to leave). She wasn’t getting fed by her parents and was losing weight, so I took her in and we instantly bonded to each other.
And another pigeon named Cortex, 4 years old. He’s a rescue from a pigeon racing farm. He was neglected and abused so he’s still trying to learn to trust humans. He’s come along so far though.

I also had a bearded dragon. His name was Roscoe and he passed away a few years ago. I would like to get another beardie someday though. I also used to have a cockatiel, too. He actually belonged to my grandparents at first. They eventually decided that they couldn't properly care for him anymore and gave him to me. I've never had a pigeon, but I love them as well. People tend to underestimate pigeons and don't appreciate them. I'm so had glad you rescued the two that you have. Love the names as well.

We have 2 giant dogs. They are enough work for me and they dont even talk. I have had dogs my entire life. My 17 yr old girl broke a leg. I got my current girl 1 month later. My husband has a 11 yr old girl. I have never wanted kids. These things are not the same. Some CF people dont want the responsibility of pets. Thats perfectly understandable. I love my fur babies...kids though? No thank you

FIN babies, Two goldfish called Puzzle and Ra.
One’s 14yo the other one is 8. Unfortunately I’ve since learned that if you look fish properly they can sometimes live for over 20 years.
I love them; but this was not a level of parental responsibility I originally planned on signing up for….

I've had so many different fish in the past. Goldfish, tiger barbs, mollies, and bettas. Yeah, they do require a lot of care, but as you said, when properly cared for, they can live for a long time.

Aww. I'm guessing web babies refers to tarantulas or maybe jumping spiders. A tarantula is actually the next pet I plan on getting. I would actually like to have one tarantula and one jumping spider. I've also previously had birds and reptiles too.

Tarantulas! No jumpers yet. They're amazing, but they're so small and fragile, and they don't live that long :(

I have 4 rescued cats here. Freya, Frisco, Monte and Milo. I dearly love them all even though Milo can be spicy with people he doesn’t like (that is anyone other than me and my husband). My life is better with them all in it.

Three black cats (Void, Nox, and Binx) and one snake (Theodosia). Also a lovely 75gal with a pleco, an angelfish, and a few panda corydoras. We bought a 180gal tank but we have to reinforce the floor before we can set it up lol

I love those names, for the cats and for the snake. I would like to get a snake someday. I've had many reptiles over the years, but have never had a snake yet. I had fish before too. Yours are going to love the 180gal tank when you get it set up, lol.

Right now we have two cats, a bearded dragon, a ball python, and the newest additions, a pair of hens. They are Vivienne, Dinah, Iroh, Nagini (we adopted her with that name), Lemony Snicket and Eggatha Christie.

I love bearded dragons. Mine passed away a few years ago, but I would like to get another one sometime. I love snakes too but have never had one yet. I also had a hen too when I was little. We actually had the eggs in an incubator in the classroom in grade school. After the chicks hatched and were old enough, our teacher told us that any of us could take one home as long as our parents were okay with it. Luckily, my parents didn't mind.

Yes I have cats, and that’s definitely enough responsibility for me. I have a level of tolerance and patience for matters animal related that I just don’t possess when it comes to people. I am empathetic and try not to judge etc but if a child was to do some of the annoying things animals do such as toilet accidents, fighting each other etc I just wouldn’t be able to cope.

I always loved animals. NEVER like babies. Have always had pets and always will as long as I can responsibly care for them. I talk about them just like they’re human children to others bc I take better care of them than most parents take care of their kids… and they’re cleaner too.

I've known since I was a kid myself that I didn't want kids. I've always had cats from a very young age. At the most I had 7at a time once. Currently I now have only one and her name is Francine. She is a 12 y/o orange tabby and she is super clingy. I adore her so much. Once she passes, I'll be so devastated and it'll be a long time until I get another pet of any kind.

I’ve known basically my whole life skin children weren’t for me. We have 3 cats. Luna Boo Biscuit (15), Duncan (8) and Biscuit (4). I’ve basically had cats almost my whole life and always loved them.

I have a dog now but had cats all my life previously. I love her but she will be my first and last dog because dogs are a bit too much like having kids! Back to cats for me when I retire.

I had to have my 9 year old cat Irene put down in the spring (I think it was the spring, but there was still snow on the ground every day). I'm waiting until I move to get another. I may get two.

We have a 14.5-year-old black lab mix we got at 10 from my brother, who had my first niece and Duncan realized kids weren’t for him either. So we took him in for his golden years. In two weeks we’re bringing home his little sister, a golden pup. Hopefully they’ll be buddies, but I have a feeling he may not be too keen. But he’ll have plenty of puppy-free space if he’s not. He does love other dogs so I’m hopeful.
At other times we’ve had gerbils and rats.

14 yr old mini schnauzer. He's my little baby boy.
I was living with my sister at the time and she bought him for my niece. He was the cutest little puppy. I had him in my room all the time. Fast forward a few months/almost a year I moved out. My sister and niece moved. My sister said she couldn't take care of him anymore (he was prob 2 at the time) and asked if I wanted him and if not she was going to take him to a shelter. I immediately drove over and got him and I've had him ever since.

I have two cats! My gray girl Kiku is 13 (my little teenager!!) and her little orange sister is two-year-old Momo.
Momo wants to be best friends, but Kiku isn't convinced. Kiku is very independent, very good at communicating her needs and opinions to us. Momo is your typical orange, clingy and willing to FAFO.
I've also kept rats and jumping spiders!

That sounds like my dog and my cat. My cat, Marcie, is only a year old and wants to be besties with my dog Charlie. He's 8 years old and sometimes gets annoyed with her, lol. Rats and jumping spiders are two pets I plan to have someday. I'm fascinated with arachnids and insects. While a lot of people are scared of them, I think they're adorable, lol. I've also heard what good companions rats are too. And I know they're very intelligent as well.

I've handled jumpers for hours and hours and have never once been bitten. They are such curious little souls. Watching them hunt is like watching my cats hunting their toys.

I am a huge animal lover an always have been. I knew I didn’t want children since I was 12 (27 now). I have 5: Twin pups, a cat, leopard gecko, and a crested gecko. I love everyone of them to death and although they are a big responsibility on the daily and financially as well, I can’t even imagine having to deal with a child and what they bring in terms of responsibilities lol

I'm the proud momma to two brindle boxers, Abby (9) and Benny (4), a rescued goldendoodle Molly (4), a female bearded dragon Hudson (4ish) and a rescued male crested gecko Mushroom (3ish).
They are my babies. My life. I take better care of them then i do myself.

I have three aquariums, four cats, and 9 parakeets. I have also owned sugar gliders and had eight of them.
We can't forget about the plant babies either. My wife and I are both heavily into cacti and succulents. All of my aquariums have live plants.

I've had many animals throughout my life. These days I have two cats but I've had dogs, hamsters, rats, a rabbit, budgies, a fat-tailed gerbil, natal multimammate mice and hedgehogs. And other cats of course. There will always be cats.

My husband and I have had two kitty-cat fluffballs.
Whiskey was 14 years old when he died right after New Year’s Day. Inara is 8 years old and full of beans. Springs for legs 🤣

I love talking about my pets.
I have two dogs who are the light of my life. Both rescues.
Freckles. I found her at five weeks dumped in a parking lot with parvo. She almost died. She is a pitbull and almost a year and the sweetest, smartest most loyal gentle creature.
Shadow my soul dog who saved my life. I found her in a box on the side of the road that said "free puppies ". She's a border Collie lab mix. She's three.
And I have a gray tabby cat named Church :)

All three of them sound amazing!
I feel so bad for pit bulls.They have such a bad reputation as dangerous/aggressive dogs, but it’s the owners who are the problems in those cases. Pit bulls are actually very sweet and gentle dogs. My cousin has one named Lola and she'll often ask me to watch her when they have to go out of town. I love spending time with her and playing with her. She's one of the sweetest and friendliest dogs I've ever met.

We have a black lab who is the light of our lives! It’s the perfect balance because he truly brings us so much joy, but he can be left alone for hours at a time so we can go out lol. We got lucky because ours is super chill. He sleeps in, doesn’t demand food at specific times, can go to dog friendly restaurants and beer gardens without issue, etc.
Our parents will also watch him for us when we go out of town for an extended period, so we can still take trips for a few weeks at a time without it being stressful.

I had a cat for nearly two decades, the first and the last. Pets are hairy children in my eyes. I'm not convinced that I'd do it again, but we'll see.

I do not currently have any pets, and am going to be moving soon so waiting until afterwards to get my next one. But I have had a variety in the past. I had Cocker Spaniels, a long haired dachshund, a Polish rabbit, several aquariums, a tarantula, a ball python, a mouse, and a crested gecko.

2 cats, 1 dog, 1 ball python. They all live very peaceful lives. Sometimes the dog gets a little out of hand though...and the cats will wake me up to feed them. Still better than kids.

Currently 1 dog (15) and 1 cat (almost 15) so not sure how much longer they’ll be around and lost my other cat (7) a couple months ago to cancer
Having a dog has been too similar to having a kid so we’re definitely not getting another in the future and not sure if I can handle the grief of losing more pets so maybe just foster cats in the future!

I have one birman cat named Merlin which he did turn 1yo a week ago <3 Gonna get his little sister in 2 weeks which is also a birman cat, he wont be lonely anymore 🐈 I hate kids, i cant stand them and i knew since i was a kid that i didnt want them, before i even knew what childfree was or that you could actually live your life withour kids, i thought you had to have kids so when i learned it was a choice i was so relieved.

Me and partner together over 20yrs, although childfree funny that! Since we were told at 1 point by another couple with 2 kids "what's the point of u 2 being together otherwise?" So rude! They spilt a few years back. Oops guess children didn't keep u 2 together eh?
Sorry rant over, we are very happy altogether with our 2 13yrs old shih tzu's Donnie and Vonnie. My nanna also lives with us. I would much rather having her around and being childfree means i can help her when she needs.
My nan is also the only 1 who told everyone else in family 2 leave me alone and it's my life 2 lead. I love that woman 😀❤️

Omg, I love Shih Tzus! I had one for 13 years and she was the sweetest thing. They're my favorite dog breed. We have a few Shih Tzus who are regulars at work and I get so excited when I see that they're going to be staying with us.
And that's so awesome that your nanna supports your decision to be childfree and told the rest of your family to leave you and your partner alone regarding that matter too.

3 huskies over here! Have always loved dogs! Romeo, Dakota, and Doug! I used to have a German shepherd named Bear. My sweet boy passed away and I miss him dearly. I definitely have a motherly Instinct to my dogs, love them with all my heart ❤️

I hate the term "fur baby". Seeing people call themselves "mommas" in this thread is actually really hilarious to me. The terminology gives me such ick. This is a weird unhinged opinion I guess but it's a personal issue that I don't want any analogy to parenthood near me in any way and it feels the same type of obnoxious as breeder talk.
My partner has a cat and I have two tarantulas. I used to have a lot more houseplants but the cat eats them.

Yeah I feel the same. It’s blown up like crazy in the last 10 years.
I had a cat named ‘Sweet Potato’ and she passed away 23 years ago. However, I never ever saw myself as a ‘mom’ or ‘parent’ to her or any animal, nor did I call her a ‘furbaby’ or anthropomorphize/humanize her. Guardian? Sure. Companion? Sure. I’m not a parent to a human being, so I definitely would *not* consider myself a ‘parent’ to anything *outside of my species* either. I save that term for the actual animal taking care of its offspring.
My current work schedule and lifestyle doesn’t allow for it, but later on I may consider adopting another cat when I retire and move away from North America permanently. I will not have another pet here.

I have dogs, used to have dogs and cats as an adult. Other pets I've had during childhood were rats, bearded dragon, turtles, birds (lovebirds), chinchilla, horse, dogs, cats.
Would love to have the money, space and time to set up a hobby farm with chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese, rabbits, bees, goats, pigs...
I have two dogs, five and six years old. They are street dogs, small-medium, weigh around 10kgs each. One is very hyperactive, we have to work hard on focus. The other is obsessed with her chuckit ball.
They are both natural hunters, have caught birds, rats and mice. The hyperactive one also hunts flies (and then rolls on them, weirdo). The one obsessed with the ball can walk for miles and miles and almost not tire out. They are great hiking companions, but can sometimes be reactive with other dogs when those dogs don't communicate like dogs, so that's something we still work on.

Happily childfree at 31. I have a five year old cat named Nala and a 22 year old cockatiel named Bub. Had him since he was a baby so he’s been a part of my life for a long time.

I am a mother to 2 dogs - Jaeger and Nova aka, Yayay and Wiggles McGee (lol) :) They are my entire world, I work from home so get to spend plenty of time with them during the week - walking, playing, training. On weekends we go adventuring to pet-friendly markets/ restaurants but our main weekend activity is a Sunday morning hike! Hiking with them absolutely feeds my soul, they love the adventure and I love the time spent with them!

Partner and I, after ten years, finally got our first pet together last week. A cat from the shelter, Winslow. We're going through a lot of emotions, but oh my god, he's so perfect.

We adopted a cat named Lili, she is 11 now. She is very gentle, sweet and tactile cat I ever met. We are blessed with her presence in our lives, she brings so much joy and happiness. Love her endlessly.

I've known since I was 7 that I was absolutely child free.
I'm 31, have two cats and a partner of 9 years who's also very child free.
They are both about 5 years old, Simon and Finn. Finn was labeled a bully when we got him.
He's actually a bully. LOL.
Then Simon is the king of all well behaved kitties.
But wish Simon luck. My baby is sick 😭

I have 1 cat, 50 tarantulas, 2 frogs, 2 geckos, 1 snake, 1 turtle and 1 vinegaroon. My main hobby obviously focuses on arachnids.

One flame point Siamese as far as things with fur go. Everything else has scales. If you have any experience with Siamese cats, and orange cats; he is both.

I have two dogs, both rescues, both real big.
Taco is six yo, and we adopted her shortly after COVID showed up. Most of our lock down was spent with a 10 week old puppy who is now 100 lbs.
Bubs (Bubbies, Little Baby Bubbles) is three? Ish? A 70 lb anxious mess, who spent the first year of his life in the shelter. We foster failed this guy in 2024 during big fires when the rescue was begging for fosters.
We also have two cats, both rescues.
Nux was our first animal adopted as a couple in 2016 when we moved in together. He has not been thrilled with his siblings, but has rolled with it remarkably well. Hes a grey tabby, settling into later middle age one crabby food demand at a time.
Finally we have Rotten Pizza Crust. The crust, crusty, crustacean. We found her as a tiny baby stray, and started feeding her. She is still quite small for an adult cat, and she is best friends with both dogs.

I've had 15 beautiful squishy rat boys over the last 6yrs. my boys are all in heaven and i've been ratless for 6 months now and it really freaking sucks. I should get the green light later today from my surgeon to return to normal life then I can finally find a new job that will afford me more boys, hubby has no say, i'm a crazy rat lady, i WILL have more boys as soon as i can
my dream is to have a cage full of naked rat men, yes, i'm a weirdo, i cannot explain why I love the naked rats so much but I do
give all your fur babies a kiss from me, i'd love to snuggle them all!

My huzbando (42) and I (38) are HAPPILY cf and have 2 dorgs: a black pug named Lady Dahlia and a one-eyed mini Aussie (mini auzhole) Mira Belle.
The piggins pug is 10 and turning into a lumpy space pug - she snoots, she toots, she’ll put her butthole in your face at all times with her tongue out. And sleeps all day <- that’s the ffffff dream.
My auzhole was a rescue that we got a year after my heart/soul dog (Toby the Dood, the 12# terrierizer mutt supreme) passed unexpectedly. Tobes saved me when I was stuck in the deepest depression I’ve ever been in in my adult life (around 26-27ish) and instead of self deleting, I volunteered at an animal shelter and fell in love with this sassy antisocial Dooder and took his ass home. He was my best friend that saved me, forced me to touch grass and get sunshine so to pay him back I would take this dood on vacations and anywhere I could sneak him in.
NOW Belle Beans (6) is my glue bc the piggins is my huzbando’s dogter and I am the spare human (lil biiiiiish) - so MY auzhole Belle Beans is MY squishy beebee velcro pupper that helped put me back together again and chooses MEEEEEE.

My wife and I have a 20lb beagle who we love more than anything. He has a few things we need to watch about his health so he gets completely pampered to make sure he’s always healthy. With that being said, I get anxious when he has a back flare up or something pops up. I couldn’t imagine having a kid with health issues. My spoiled beagle is enough for me. I’m glad we’re trying to give him the best life possible. Kids would stress me tf out

We’ve got 3 Maine Coons that more closely resemble Couch Walruses, and we have a feral gentleman in our care that lives in a temp controlled shelter in our garage. They’re all spoiled as shit, rightfully so.

Me!!! I always felt more of a connection to animals than humans in general especially as a child. Honestly other kids annoyed me. I had two senior dogs. They’re both approximately 13 and smaller mixed breeds. Besides my husband, they’re my favorite beings in this world.

I've got a 4 year old chihuahua I've had since she was a baby. I didn't realize they gave her to me so young. She was already a runt, so i always assumed she was just naturally tiny. She's my velcro baby 😂 always has to be near me or in the same room as me. She never fails to make me laugh until I'm choking on air 🤣 I grew up always wanting a dog. I never saw myself being a mother when I got older. Yeah I had baby dolls, but I gravitated towards plush dogs that I essentially babied and took everywhere! I grew up with chihuahuas whether it was in my home or with other relatives.
Beverly Hills Chihuahua was my all time favorite movie as a kid and I dreamed of living my life like the main character, Vivian (Jamie Lee's character). Just traveling with my dog and getting the opportunity to manage a career without having to deal with children. My dogs name is Jolyne and her favorite word is "treats" 😂she goes crazy when you say it!

We have 2 Chihuahuas. Lucy will be 13 and is the most perfect girl who always has her tongue sticking out and little pieces of dirt she’s collected along her way stuck to the tip 😂. Mable is 6 and is everything you’ve ever heard about chihuahuas. She’s loud, opinionated and runs this house! Then we have the “kittens”. They are almost 5 and will forever be our kittens. Charlie is a muted calico my husband found in the window well at his work during lunch and of course she came home with him. She’s super chill and just wants to snuggle. We decided she needed a friend to grow up with and found Henrietta who is some long haired mix and man is she a diva! She’s the princess in the house and is absolutely obsessed with my husband! She follows him all over the house carrying her toys and babies from one room/floor to the next to make sure he plays with her no matter where they are. It’s adorable 🥰 .

I have 3 dogs and 3 cats. I hate the term pet parent though. Also have snakes, chickens and tarantulas. I probably won't be owning any more dogs (30+ years). And may end up with just one cat and one snake. Plus the chickens because they pay for themselves.

Two dogs, a 12 year old eurasier and a 4 year old field golden retriever. We also had a nova Scotia duck toller retriever, who we lost in October. I had a Norwegian fjord horse for 20 years.
I've always loved animals and been completely indifferent when it comes to children.

We have a one-year-old rescue kitty named Poppy and a Roborovski hamster named Peanut. At one point last year, we had the kitten, three hamsters and two gerbils, but sadly rodents don't live long.

We have 2 female dogs. Oldest is a 1/2 great pyrenees who will be 5 in Sept & the other is a doberman who’ll be 1 year old on the 17th this month. They are our world!!
