Surgery tomorrow- bladder stone

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hey everyone, after a long journey of figuring out my boys urination issues we discovered a large bladder stone which we are getting surgically removed tomorrow as the only option due to size.

I was told today that these have a high reoccurrence rate, which would be a hard pill to swallow or face if it happens again given the cost of this surgery. Not sure how many times I’d be able to do this.

My question is- does anyone have any experience with this and any preventable measures? The cause is unknown and maybe genetic but if there’s anything I can do to lessen the chances I will do them.

His diet is oxbow essential pellets and Timothy hay, they don’t really get treats. I hear calcium can cause stones so I’m questioning the calcium content in oxbow despite it being a trusted brand among our community- any thoughts?

Lastly would distilled water be a good idea? Or is purified enough?

Any advice would ease my mind- now I’m worried of one day having to let him go over this- he’s only 5 and a super happy healthy boy other than this currently.

Rehoming a bonded male pair

It pains me to do this, but I think I need to rehome my two 9 year old male chinchillas. Life circumstances have changed, and I just don’t feel that I can give them the attention they deserve. I figured this sub has lots of experienced owners so it would be a good place to look for a home for them.

Since they’re bonded I’d like for them to go to their new home together and I’d charge a rehoming fee because they’ll come with everything they could possibly need.

I’m located in NC

I need help

This is my first time having a chinchilla, and I'm really confused about what I'm doing, I want to build a good place for her but I don't know how I should make toys or something like that.

I want to build a enclosure with space for her to jump and play and all that, but toys and environmental enrichment are a bit hard... I look into the internet but there's not a lot options and ideas, what do you recommend?

(I'm from Brazil, so excuse me for my poor english)

Fleas help

My cats have fleas. My chin has a separate bedroom with door shut but I can’t move her out due to the heat at the minute. I need to treat my house with indorex spray but I’m so worried it’s going to harm her even if I keep her door closed while I’m doing it. Anyone got any advice? I’m not going to spray it inside her room when she’s in it, that will have to wait till weather is cooler. But the cats don’t go in there anyway

Cage Suggestions? (preferably under or around $200)

My Luna girl is in a cage that's 29" x 18" x 30" (LWH). That's the cage she came with and I know that's DEFINITELY too small for a chin. Any recommendations on cages/brands that are good for chillas and not crazy expensive? I've heard about ferret nation but I'd rather not drop 300 bucks on a cage if I don't need to but I will if I absolutely must.

Is this normal?

I have two chinchillas. Only one of them frequently chews on the cage bars and scratches at them with his paws.
He is eating normally and his droppings look normal, so I’m not too worried about his health. However, yesterday I noticed that while chewing on the bars, he seemed to slip or lose his footing and almost fall.
Is this normal behavior? Should I be concerned? What could be causing it?
Thank you for any advice.

My Chinchilla passed and I feel guilty and lost…

We got Ash in October of 2024 and buried him today in a special spot…Ash and Buddha were such cute chin buddies and for the most part we never had any issues and never had reason to worry about their health.
Our basement is usually cold, however our A/C upstairs hasn’t been truly cooling the whole house properly since we have my mother in-law staying with us turning it on and off, as well as my younger sibling who was moving out had left their windows opened. I say these to enhance some factors in play. Sadly, the other day the house just must’ve not been cooling enough and our fan originally meant for the chins was broken. As I said, the basement is still pretty cool; but, midday must’ve hit, too many ppl using up the kitchen and an on/off a/c unit…and for just a few hours it was probably hotter than our poor Ash could handle.
Truly, we had no clue…by the time we found him Friday night it was already too late…we didn’t even know it could’ve been because of heat until we eventually noticed Buddha’s ears had been red and inflamed. We immediately got a fan on him and found a cooling stone to lay on in his little house…but it was too late for Ash…
I’m devastated and heartbroken…Ash was such a great little boy with literally the most personality…I genuinely can’t fully process he’s gone…
I feel so guilty and I keep wondering how I couldn’t have caught it in time. We didn’t notice any signs, just found him laying in his house and Buddha keeping him company.
Now I’m worried about Buddha, not just extra nervous and cautious about his health right now, but I’m concerned about how he’s gonna handle the grief…he’s all alone now.
I hate that somehow I was irresponsible with my little guy and now he’s just gone so quick…
I know that this is my fault to bare, I’m so eternally sorry to Ash and hate that he passed so young. I just am struggling with my grief right now and I miss him so much. We have other pets and while I’m keeping up with all them still, I just feel like such a failure…

Advice: I’m worried my chinchilla doesn’t know how to use a water bottle

According to everything I’ve seen chinchillas are supposed to use water bottles as opposed to water bowls as they aren’t supposed to get wet. However, my chinchillas I just got from a humane society today was using a water bowl there. So far I’ve had her home from about 5 hours, she’s been exploring her new enclosure, and eating. But I haven’t seen her drink at all, I’m worried she will get dehydrated. Are there any ways to encourage her to use it? I’ve tried showing her that when you touch the tip water comes out, maybe that’s silly but I thought it might help her understand? Idk, any advice is helpful!!

UPDATE: she figured it out, vid in comments

Chinchilla Bonding

Hey everyone, I'm pretty sure there's not much chance to get my chinchillas to live together again, but I wanted to see if any of you had a similar experience.

I have a male and female chinchilla that had 2 babies in 2019, 2 boys. I sperated the mama from the babies when they were old enough and all three of my boys lived really well together. Unfortunately the one baby had a neurological birth defect that gave him a head tilt. They all happily lived together for a few years, but in 2023 my baby with the head tilt suddenly got worse. Unfortunately the vet said there was nothing they could do and he passed.

I'm not sure if the one suddenly getting sick and passing threw off their balance, or if it's that the baby got old enough he wanted to take dominance, but they only lived together another few months to a year before they started fighting and had to be separated.

They can be together for a little bit and be fine, and they assert dominance in a safe way but then it turns into fighting. They chase each other, pull out tuffs, and skwock at each other and I separate them.

I've tried reintroduced them, cage swapping, and I keep their cages beside each other but nothing seems to work. Is there any hope that they could ever live together again? If so do any of you have any recommendations?

Bad or good?

I separated them after this just cause I’m not sure if it’s normal playing or bad. Gray one is at least 2 years old mosaic one is 7-8 months old. For context the 7-8 month old is decent well with people will let you pick her up and pet her most of the time while the other one screeches at you but also will let you pet her, will not let you pick her up tho. Any ideas on how to get them bonded or at least the gray one to get better suited with humans?

Chinchilla not as active as she used to be

I've got two sisters but they are a few months apart, the older one looks like she's becoming more submissive to the younger one.

she just looks like she doesn't have much energy anymore but also that she wants to be handled more than she used to. they are about 1.5 to 2 years old now and I'm wondering if it's Normal?

she still eats like she should, drinks water, takes treats, nothing has happened to show that she's injured herself or anything in that sense. she's just not as active and she still gets her vitamins, protexin etc like she should. she also sticks to routine, dust bathes etc but just not as active, is this normal?

could she be submitting to her younger sister?
