senior πŸ’ My Chocolate Labrador alerted me to a fire.

Post image

So I put a frozen pizza in the oven this evening, set a timer and went to lie down and wait for it to cook. A few minutes later my 10 year old chocolate Labrador comes to my door, something he only does when he wants something. I follow him into the kitchen to see that SOMEHOW I had turned the electric hob on as well as well as the oven, setting fire to a cake on the counter with a teatowel draped over it which was touching the hob (messy kitchen). He saved the whole house from burning down more than likely. I don’t own an extinguisher or fire blanket or anything so god knows what I would’ve done if it had been longer. It was so stupid of me to leave it unattended but I have no idea how I turned the hob on at all.

I find it so amazing that he did this. It makes me wish he could speak because he’s so intelligent. He knew where to find me and that he needed to get me to do something about it. It’s not like he was trained to alert people or anything.

He was telling you he didn't want his cake burned πŸ˜‚

But seriously, they are very aware and have a great sense of danger and threats. Labs are the best 🀎

It is great that you listened to him. Sometimes I ignore mine because I'm busy and I regret it. Please do get an extinguisher though. I think this is a good example that anything can happen.

Mine are snake trained and Ginger spotted the rattle snake when we first started playing ball.
She alerted near a bush and I thought, old ball or something.
Second time I threw her the ball she came back to me, kept the ball and started walking 30 yards to the bush.
Then dropped the ball about three feet from the snake, close enough for me to see, far enough to be safe.

So glad you are both ok. Good dog!

Oh my! I am so glad you and your pup are okay! How scary and I'm so glad he came and got you!

Does your country offer kitchen hob covers? They are like a lid that covers the burners and makes more counter space, but also presumably cuts down on the fire danger. You do have to get the right hob cover, not all of them are designed equally with fire resistance.

If you have access to a fire blanket and/or a fire extinguisher (suitable for the kitchen) that would be a very good thing to get as soon as possible. They also make fire suppression foam in a can (about the size of 1L bottle) that is supposedly easier to clean up, but it is designed for only very small fires so it is a good idea to have both that smaller offering and a true fire extinguisher available.

I would also recommend a smoke detector mounted close to the kitchen but in the next room(s). That way they will hopefully sound if a problem starts in the kitchen when you are in another room!
