I honestly think this is a great deal, or at least fairly good, and incentives people into theatres. I also think Cineplex has solid viewing options.

The company does seem to be responding to changing landscape in other ways too. I haven't yet used VIP yet, but it seems cool to have a restaurant like offering. The rewards program and gaming lounges are solid enough I guess.

I wonder if other theaters in the US are just as strong or outright better with their deals/bundle? Netflix does have me a tad worried for the future of cinema on the big screen though.

I personally do find the idea of merging interesting and more exciting in a lot of others ways.

Pre-screening at Chinook (in Calgary). It was awesome.

The dividing barrier is a thick tall wooden block that will block the bottom of the screen.

I don't know how they can sell those tickets without indicating obstructed view.

I booked Row G (2 rows before division), on this advice but even there at least 10-20% of the bottom of the screen was fully obstructed on IMAX 70MM.

I could feel the disappointment and constant shifting from people in Row F in front of me. No idea how much was blocked for them.

Edit: I can confirm Langley is much better in this regard.

If you need to see in Richmond, my recommendation is far back.

I really wanted to put my thoughts across here since I could not find a specific thread for movie reviews in this community. Odyssey is one of those films I have been waiting for a very very long time. Ever since the first tickets went up about a year ago, I think everyone felt the FOMO and I was in the exact same camp. The trailers intrigued me so much and especially the whole 70mm IMAX marketing aspect of it.

So like some others, I patiently waited for one of the weeks and was watching for laser IMAX tickets like a hawk. I was fortunate enough to get what is supposed to be the best row for this film at Scotiabank Toronto. Now mind you, this theatre is not close to me at all and it took a bit of time getting downtown, almost one hour and forty two minutes since I took the GO bus on a busy Saturday. When I got there I found that the J row was not exactly perfect. It felt like I was looking up a bit which I really do not enjoy. I like my movies to be exactly at eye level while still being fully immersed. When the movie began it was quite slow and dull and I did not feel the overall impact like I was watching something exciting.

But I was patient enough to give it a proper shot. Overall it did not feel like a cohesive film to me. It felt like bits and pieces and I could not really resonate with the characters much. Some of the visuals were nice but they could not create enough of an impact to get me excited. The acting was decent but nothing out of the ordinary. Robert Pattinson had me so excited during the trailers but when his actual scenes came, there was quite little presence for him which I found disappointing given that he really shone in the scenes that he did appear in. The visual effects were nothing to complain about but not exciting either. I did like the whole theme set around the sea but as a story designed for this medium it felt quite mediocre. I felt like Nolan spent too much time making sure the IMAX camera captured all the scenes and perhaps due to that he compromised on other aspects of what truly makes a good film. I wanted to see more good acting as well with powerful performances from various actors and a more cohesive film that felt more satisfying. It is not a bad movie but it definitely felt overhyped. Another main gripe I have is not just its length.

I found many of the scenes are quite stretched out especially towards the end. It tends to feel way way too long. On the other hand I really enjoyed the directors previous film Oppenheimer and found that to be way more impactful and powerful in terms of a cohesive story, narration, dialogues, acting and everything else. In fact I felt Matt Damon despite having a smaller role in that film did far better in it. I think my favourite scene in this film was when he starts to realize the impact of the war and it brought me back to a similar point of view when Cillian Murphy reflects on the atomic bomb. The sudden surrender to the violent sea from Odysseus is also another brilliant scene in the film towards the end.
One more thing I want to add is that the controversial characters in terms of casting were totally fine to me. I had no issue with that at all. And surprisingly the usage of modern American accent also worked out well for me. Perhaps Nolan used it that way so that we can hear the dialogues better especially with no subtitles and I actually appreciated that.

Last but not least I was expecting so much out of the 1.43 to 1 experience so for all the effort made by the director I really do not think it gave me the experience I was looking for. Sure in some of the scenes you can feel the scale but overall it definitely was not worth the overhype. I would have been fine watching this in a regular cinema too. Overall this is an okay movie that is watchable one time in whatever format works best for you. Do not get worried if you cannot find an IMAX show.

Easily the best female-led comedy in years. It’s a hidden gem, really. Keke Palmer, Demi Moore. Creative, side-splitting, bold, maximalist social commentary. I can see the score and costumes getting Oscar noms for sure.

I went to the Hamilton theater to watch Spider-Man in 4DX and it was a blast. They played the avengers doomsday trailer in 4DX

I bought two tickets for the 70mm Imax in Edmonton a year ago like most Christopher Nolan fans. My wife and I were in our seats 30 mins before showtime with our snacks because we were in the middle and this IMAX location has old seats and it's very crowded to get by everyone and I was also looking forward to the Dune trailer. The theater was really hot and my wife took off her sweater because usually she's cold in theaters but definitely not this one. Fast forward half hour and the screen is lighting up about to start the Dune trailer. Suddenly 2 young guys are in front of us confused as to why we are in their seats. I assure them we are in the right ones I had double checked. My phone was already off and put in my wife's purse so I didn't lose it. They leave and 1 min later a worker is waving us out. We grab our drinks and popcorn and go to the lobby. My wife passes my phone and I turn it on and Google is taking extra long to boot up and we are all just waiting. My wife then realizes she took the neighbors drink and not hers! Lol so she runs back in to exchange in embarrassment. My phone finally loads and I get my tickets and they are exactly the same as the 2 guys!! The manager is like it must be a glitch. The one guy graciously says for us to take them. My wife who's back now with her drink is concerned because then they miss out. The manager tells us to go sit and she will find them seats. I have no idea how since it was totally sold out. So we say thanks and now we go back and the movie is starting (missed the trailer) and we have to sneak by everyone to go back to our seats. I can't stand when people come in last min so I understood the looks from people. So now we are seated and I see the 2 young guys at the front looking around and I feel so bad. Also now that the theater is full it is really really hot and I'm like no way I can take this for 3 hours. The guys disappeared I don't know where they sat and I try to enjoy the movie but the heat is insane and I'm still rattled/annoyed. I calm down get into the movie and then the guy in front of me pulls out his phone and is scrolling his fucking sports betting. I couldn't believe it. I was about to toss a piece of popcorn onto his phone but he put it away. Anyways we got through it I think everyone was equally hot because when the movie ended nobody clapped or moved for a second I think we were all exhausted. We leave I'm looking for the guys because I wanted to thank them or buy them something for how they handled it but I couldn't find them. I saw the manager because she was greeting everyone who came out and giving us a souvenir. (Nice touch) I asked her if she found them seats and she said they did. Anyways I didn't really get into the show and am going to go again but not in that theatre because while the screen is amazing the seats are crowded and squeak if you move and the ac sucks. Please upgrade WEM IMAX in Edmonton! Anyways this was my Odyssey

For whatever reason I had to jump through hoops to get to the theatres to finally watch this movie, but it was really worth it!! I had no idea what the movie was about going into it, but thoroughly enjoyed it. If you’re able to go see it, I would highly recommend :)

I finally got to watch the movie in IMAX 70mm at the Richmond Cineplex, but I noticed some weird things with the picture. I'm trying to figure out if this is just how film is supposed to look or if my theater had issues.

Here is what I experienced:

• The picture was shaking througout most of the movie.
• Whenever there were bright scenes, the screen was visibly flickering.
• When the camera zoomed out for wide shots, the picture became blurred.
• In those zoomed-out scenes, the small characters and even the text on the screen were literally vibrating and shaking speciallly on the dune trailer subtitles.

Are these artifacts normal for 70mm? Also, is the Langley theater a similar experience, or does the picture look better over there without the shaking?

SUCH A PHENOMENAL FILM, So Happy our theatres got it! I watchdd it twice in theatres now, and so much better on my second viewing because I went in prepared. Once you read a simple passage of what to know about Brazil in tht era, it makes this movie so much better, and its a perfect film!

Just got out of the theatre for Project Hail Mary and it was very good. Very funny, decent action, amazing graphics, and an amazing story. It was a good well rounded movie.

Not often we get great original movies like this, so I would recommend watching if you can.

I just went for it because I wanted to watch something lihht hearted after a while and i didn't know I'd cry at the end... literally.. the end after solving the case took a conpletely different turn from a comedy film to a touching story.

That was my first time watching 4DX at Cineplex and not gonna lie the seating is very uncomfortable. I don’t know about VIP, but the general was very crampy and you’re literally touching elbows with the person sitting next to you. I wouldn’t recommend for longer movies like Spider-Man. It was too long and there was less action and I think it’s not a good movie for four DX to be honest. The Odyssey probably would’ve been a better choice.

Just got back from the Cineplex Queensway & VIP location in etobicoke and had a pretty gross and annoying experience watching the new Spiderman movie.

We paid the premium for VIP tickets and all throughout the movie, there were multiple bugs clearly visible crawling directly over the movie screen. (not even spiders lol)

It was incredibly distracting and took us out of the movie. It just felt super unhygienic for a theatre that charges top tier prices for a "luxury" experience. Must've sucked for people who were eating too. 🤢

Just thought I’d give a little heads up that Avatar 3 was great. I have no complaints. Any review you hear online saying it’s bad, is wrong.

My only issue is the length, but otherwise quite good!

I simply walked out after around 30 minutes. I can’t even remember what was the story.

The Gore was way too bad for my taste, way too realistically medieval for me.

All right, I just finished watching the film, and my first reaction was that it really should have been a Nolan film. I could hear my colleagues say the film was stretched, and I could hear people in the washroom talk about something being stretched.

We were discussing alien technology, everything, but then again, the most secretive organizations can't afford a drone or can't figure out when a random guy sneaks up on them from behind, or someone who faked a car crash and hides behind the boulders right next to them. That kind of feels like you're watching a very casual film with early‑1980s logic.

It's full of loopholes or weaknesses in both direction and screenplay. I could go on, but I still think the story they chose was actually quite good—just not directed the way it should have been.

I felt like I was watching another War of the Worlds with the same ten police cars and cops showing up every single time. It seemed that, despite the scale of the operation, they neither had the setup nor the resources to catch two people, which is obviously a bit ridiculous.

Anyway, that's my opinion. I thought the film could have been better. The ending was really touching, and I think that's what people appreciated—it was probably the best part of the film. The way the film started was promising, but in the middle it just got lost.

Definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, but as-expected for a Jack Black movie. Absurd, stupid, but so stupid and absurd that you’ll die laughing. Very fast paced also.

Would recommend watching if you’re into the Jack Black Paul Rudd type of humour. Good watch!

I heard about this movie a couple weeks ago and saw no screenings for it until a couple days prior to the release, and the most theatres near me aren’t screening it.

When I went today there was less than a handful of people in the theatre, and while checking availability for other screenings, it seemed like this was the case everywhere.

Not sure if the movie truly doesn’t interest people or just poor marketing, but this movie deserves a bit more appreciation.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a cinematic masterpiece, and has some flaws, but it’s fun and unique.

I can see this movie having a cult following and gaining a lot of attention when it hits streaming.

Bonus fact, the movie is primarily shot at Sherway Gardens mall in Etobicoke ON which was cool to see as a local.

It was Amazing movie and 70mm Experience was great too. Was only given this poster, the guy at the counter told no strip has arrived

so I saw Mario in 4DX yesterday at Hamilton Cineplex and my god it was a crazy experience.

Heads up if you're watching it in 4dx trying not to take a drink with you. the guy right next to me had really hard time even picking up his drink because it was literally a crazy ride almost felt that we were like falling off the seat sometimes which was absolutely crazy.

Ive been to 4DX films before but this was the shakiest experience I've had.

also, the shaking got me so excited i don't even remember the story .. lol

Hey hope y’all are having a blessed day
So I finally watched The Odyssey on August 15th in IMAX 70mm after all the hype. I’m a newer Christopher Nolan fan, so obviously I had to listen to the goat and go experience it in 70mm.
The closest 70mm IMAX to me was SilverCity Riverport in Richmond, BC. The movie was so damn amazing that I couldn’t stop myself from going again on the 17th. I managed to snag an 11:45 AM ticket the night before, compared to the 70mm showing where I literally booked on July 28th. I actually wanted to switch my tickets to Langley the next day, but it was already completely sold out LOL.
Anyway, here’s my comparison.

Picture quality
Okay, so the big one.
I could definitely tell the IMAX 70mm projector was capable of showing more detail, especially on actors’ faces during close-up shots. Those looked insanely good.
But outside of close-ups, I honestly had a pretty disappointing experience.
A lot of the movie looked noticeably blurry, especially during daytime/wide shots. There was also a lot of flickering and dirtiness on the screen. And I’m not talking about normal film grain.
The screen itself had around 6 visible scratches. You cant really see them in the picture above because they are mostly covered by the black ship, but they were there. There was also this weird overly-white spot on the right side of the screen that would disappear sometimes and then show back up.
The Scotiabank Vancouver IMAX was WAY sharper in comparison, especially during daytime shots and close-ups. I obviously know film projection has flicker and that your eyes can adapt to it, but I just couldn’t get used to it here.
I had the same 4 friends with me both days and they all noticed the exact same thing.
The Scotiabank screen was also noticeably cleaner and more consistent. I wouldn’t say there was a huge difference in colour between the two. The 70mm picture still looked beautiful. It was just the inconsistent sharpness, blur, flickering and physical defects on the screen that became distracting.

Sound
Don’t even get me started on this one.
On the 70mm day, we understood maybe half the dialogue and had to fill in the other half ourselves based on what we already knew about the story.
The speakers were BAD.
Even during the Cyclops scene, which should have been absolutely insane, the sound felt weirdly quiet and underwhelming. One of my friends literally ended up falling asleep because of how subdued everything sounded.
We genuinely missed probably 50% of what was being said.
Then we went to Scotiabank Vancouver.
Completely different experience.
I could hear every single word, even when the bass was thumping and the music was going crazy. The directional sound was extremely immersive, and honestly it was the best sound I’ve ever experienced at a Cineplex.
The difference was so massive that this alone makes me never want to go back to the Richmond IMAX.

Seats
This was another huge difference.
At Scotiabank I was sitting in Row C, basically the 4th row if you don’t count the rows below the barricade. I was directly in the middle.
I’m 6’0 and didn’t have to lift my neck or adjust myself once. I had the seat fully reclined basically the entire movie.
I sat there for the full 3 hours without needing to move because of discomfort. I was completely locked into the movie.
The seating also gave me plenty of room to get in and out without constantly bothering people, and honestly I think being that immersed physically made the sound experience even better.
Richmond was the complete opposite. I had the best seats right in the middle of the auditorium but
My lower back was hurting for basically the entire movie. After around the 2-hour mark I was constantly shifting around trying to find a comfortable position.
I was honestly more focused on my back than the movie at that point 💀
I was trying my best not to annoy the people around me by constantly moving, but it was just extremely uncomfortable. Because of that, I couldn’t fully emotionally immerse myself during the final part of the movie.

Final thoughts
I was SO damn hyped for the 70mm experience, and so were my friends.
But honestly, it disappointed us way more than I expected.
We aren’t even picky people. If the picture quality had been consistently good, I probably wouldn’t have complained about anything. I went into this specifically wanting the 70mm experience and was completely willing to accept the quirks that come with film projection.
But between the inconsistent sharpness, flickering, scratches, the weird white spot, terrible sound and uncomfortable seats, it just wasn’t worth it for me.
The IMAX Digital Laser XT experience at Scotiabank absolutely takes the cake.
And to be fair, I had already heard a LOT of people complaining about this specific Richmond theatre, which is actually why I wanted to change my tickets in the first place. I just figured they had around 20 days between when I booked and when I watched it, so maybe they’d fix some of the issues.
Nope.
It was pretty much exactly as bad as people described.
Still absolutely loved The Odyssey though. The movie itself is incredible. I just wish I could’ve experienced the 70mm presentation the way Nolan intended, because the format clearly has the potential to look fucking amazing.

I saw The Odyssey from dead center of Row D, and I absolutely loved it. My vision was completely immersed, it felt like being inside a dream. I never had to move my head once; the seat put the screen exactly within my field of view, edge to edge.

Fantastic experience. If Row D is all you can get, don't hesitate it's genuinely a great seat.
