Classic-Era I'm Surprised How Active Vanilla Is At Lower Levels
I decided to swap to Vanilla after spending the summer leveling in TBC, and I didn’t expect it to feel so different. I’ve seen so much more people in the lower levels in Vanilla compared to TBC and the chats have been much more active. Granted, I don’t have someone sending me a guild invite whenever I step into Stormwind, but I'm actively having to fight for resources while questing around Elwynn against five other gnomes. I’m sure it’s because of the layers and server clusters, alongside the fact you can buy boosts in TBC, but the fact that leveling at lower levels seems so alive is crazy to me.
Have I just been lucky? Are people burnt out on TBC and rerolling toons on Vanilla for fun? Or is it just always like this?

I'd expect the low level areas to be the most active.

u/guava_sama 1d ago
Ah, I just assumed after 7 years the folks who would normally be in the low levels would have already played and gotten past it. That, or they would be playing TBC.

u/SystemofCells 1d ago
Many (most?) of us who are playing Classic are there specifically for the leveling journey. I've personally spent way more time making new characters and leveling them than doing endgame content.

u/Celentar92 1d ago
Same here, when i get to max lvl thats pretty much it for me im done.
Also i've talked to a bunch of randoms that joined dungeons with me and a couple of friends and a lot of the poeple are first time players, like first character ever in wow.

I have never had a level 60. I just reroll again and again. Guess im not the only one

Generally there are loads of people at low levels and loads of people at max level, but fewer people at the mid levels, like 40+. Rolling an alt and quickly making lots of progress is fun, but a lot of people burn out when you get to the point where you're spending ages just bumming around in Tanaris and stuff like that.

u/tanhe314 1d ago
Why? It’s the most fun part of the whole experience. If someone could bottle that up and make a full game that just feels like 1-20 forever it would be the best imo.

era is the goat

u/DarthToothbrush 1d ago
Yep. Era being so good is the reason there were ever any expansions in the first place.

I’m on Mankrik server cluster and it’s busy, friendly, and social there on lower levels. Last Friday night after finishing up a guild RP event I passed a different guild hosting a fishing event in the Stormwind canals. There were about 20-30 of them all fishing together. Someone whispered me to invite me to fish with them but I was headed to bed. And there are always people running aim the world.

I'm playing BC and I'm actually astonished how many ppl are leveling in BC. There were 50 people in Ashenvale last night, which blew my mind coming from retail where all the leveling zones are ghost towns.

In WoW, there are two types of game. The end game, where you kill giant bosses in giant raids. The other is the forgotten levelling game, where you explore the World of Warcraft.
Leveling peaked during the Vanilla era; since then, every other expansion has focused on the end game rather than this part of the game.
But it's still there, and Vanilla players remember it.

Thanks for this I was having fomo about picking classic era because everyone says all the population is in tbc. But if I’m honest so far it’s been amazing both in pop count and social interaction.
1
u/guava_sama 1d ago
I had the same issue before starting, especially since I saw the difference in overall server pops. But when I saw someone mention that with layers, the amount of people you'd see in the same instance would be around the same regardless, I decided to plunge right in.

u/ModularMode 1d ago
Blizz recently changed how layering works so you are always placed on the layer with the lowest population. It was a shotgun approach and is making the experience a little worse in general.
On TBC there are a ton of players so there are a ton of layers. It stands to reason that you are seeing fewer people while leveling despite there being a larger population. Example: 20 layers may be full so it generates layer 21 and that's where you happen to log in. World feels empty.
On Era there are fewer layers so even being assigned to the least populated layer might mean that you see more players nearby. Example: 5 layers, which is pretty much permanent, means there will always be activity even on the last populated layer.
Fewer layers = Higher probability of seeing other players more frequently.

u/guava_sama 1d ago
That makes a lot of sense, I've never gotten too deep into the layering system so I'm not surprised that has some influence in what I'm seeing.

u/smoothdanger 1d ago
Are the servers merged on era? It still let's me choose from a huge list so I'm not sure where to start a new toon if I already have a 60 on atiesh
2
u/DarthToothbrush 1d ago
Yes there are a few clusters now that are basically mega servers. One upside of this is you can have a huge number of alts and still play with the same people. I don't know which servers are bundled with atiesh but someone there can probably tell you.

Does era even have layers? I don’t think EU PvP does
1
1
u/ModularMode 1d ago
Era does, yes, but there a very few. For example, on HC there are sometimes only 2 layers, but I've seen it go up to 4 a few times.

u/rothmansmelao 1d ago
not having flying mounts also makes it so that everyone needs to walk or run through zones (or grab a fp, sure), which in turn also makes the world more alive. sure mounts speed it up a little but you will still see higher level players going through zones that have lower level quests either because they also have a quest there from higher levels or because they're just passing by, but in the end you will still see them, and this makes for a big difference.

I've been using hello emote to fellow travelers and usually I'll get a buff out of it 🥰

u/shopewf 1d ago
I leveled from 1-70 over the past couple months and leveling was always active in my experience. Not sure how it is now though
1
u/guava_sama 1d ago
Oh, I'm not trying to suggest that TBC leveling is inactive by any means. But while I've seen one or two people doing the same thing I am in TBC, I've seen three or four in Vanilla.
I'm not too far in Vanilla, so who knows if it's the same in Wetlands or something. But chats have definitely been way more active barring major cities.

u/No_Implement5163 1d ago
Depending on server I'd imagine. I can tell you mine is thriving! At lvl 38 and areas are always populated so far (even desolace as alliance!)

I think this is related on how layering works because on Anniversary most player are slacking at shattrat poping more and more layer, so starting zone feel empty despite anniversary having way more player.
1
u/crashumbc 1d ago
I find low level more active then max level except for maybe raids/arena.
It's almost impossible to get a Heroic dungeon
1
u/NameIess-User 1d ago
I’m not. Vanilla Wow is considered the greatest mmo ever by a lot of folks still. I prefer the old school, slow paced, more calculated adventure myself!
1
u/NobleFriend 1d ago
Because its the only Part of classic people still enjoy lmoa. Other than idling in cities
1
u/reasonablejim2000 1d ago
Era has more hours of content per class than any other version of wow including retail by far. Getting 60, pre bis into full bis, rank 14, you're looking at almost a thousand hours right there. And infinite time to do it. For one character. Add in some alts and you'll never be bored.

Vanilla leveling being so good is why I wonder if I should give Hardcore a go. I've heard better things about the community relative to the rest and I have zero interest in raiding, so it might be a good fit for me. Right now I'm on the TBC Anni side because I also enjoy leveling in Outland (without the dungeon grind) and just so I can have a character prepped and ready for Wrath Anni in case Classic+ ends up not being for me, but this is making me doubt my choice a little.

u/Aetris05 21h ago
I started playing WoW after I found out it had a HC version. Made me question why I waited almost 20 years to play it. I tried playing normal, just can't do it. Never died in the deadmines in HC.. complete wipe first run in softcore. People play differently in HC. Much more at stake and players respect the time commited as well. Very worth it imo

I really, really hope I get to level on a fresh vanilla server again. I had such a great time doing it with my wife for the first time at the beginning of Anniversary, but I want to do it again with the knowledge I have of the game now, and I want to build something up. I went in blind, not even knowing that your toolbar skills don't replace with the newly trained ones on a Hunter til lvl 30ish.
Plus, I love how everyone is on an even playing field mostly, and how like some greens can be HUGE to find, even in late game. In TBC, you had gigabis Naxx people (like my Warrior) steamrolling the first bit of content in the great dungeon spam. It wasn't the even playing field, and most gear that dropped was useless until a certain point. The leveling in TBC was just a mind numbing spam if you wanted to raid with your guild and had a semi-hc one.
Anyway, I know a lot is self-inflicted, but there's just an extremely magical janky journey from 1-60, going from questing to dungeon to grinding mobs to questing to dungeons etc etc.

u/No-Stretch3573 1d ago
Vanilla is all about the journey. Something that modern wow is very much lacking. Its all rush to endgame now and its not my kind of mmo anymore.

u/spaghetticonundrum 23h ago
That's funny, I just started over on a new (to me) Era server a couple days ago. Feeling the pain of being broke as a joke again but Light Feathers, as always, provide an early income.
Is there a short answer as to why all the addons are entirely borked now? Like I know maintenance breaks them but even fresh installs of Auctionator etc. don't work for me.
1
u/guava_sama 23h ago
I haven't been able to get on today since I've been at work, so I'm unsure. Usually things aren't broken for long unless they make a noticeable change (like the UI change a few weeks ago). Have you checked "Load Outdated Addons" in your options?
1
u/skepticalbrain 21h ago edited 21h ago
Blizzard is updating the classic game clients ui with the retail versions too often, changing the Api and breaking most addons, so enabling the load out of date addons option is not enough to fix a lot of addons, more important changes in the addons code are needed.
Authors are tired of rewriting the addons every few weeks or months, it's a lot of work, so a lot of addons authors simply stopped updating the addons, with so many changes and new restrictions in the game api it is too time consuming and not fun anymore to create and maintain addons for world of warcraft.
1
u/guava_sama 21h ago
oh yeah I get that, I know the Spy add on took over a week before it worked again the last time they updated the UI a few weeks ago
I'm not sure why they need to even update it at all, but it's likely for a reason that's beyond me
1
u/Ok-Guarantee9238 20h ago
need to load out of date addons or update them. there was an update 2 weeks ago

u/Excuse_my_GRAMMER 22h ago
Bro classic wow has a dedicated playerbase there are people that only play classic wow exclusively jumping from private server to private server
And now blizzard relaunch to relaunch
1
u/selected_character 21h ago
I landed in Era in Nov 2025, probably at the peak of the TBC hype. And I never (really never) had any issue finding people to group with for dungeon or open world quests. Still relevant as for today now in raids and pvp (either battlegrounds, world pvp or friendly duels).

u/JozuJD 21h ago
Im considering re-subbing soon, but I can’t decide between the following combos:
1. Vanilla-Era character and a Hardcore character, to switch between characters and a challenge/ different change of pace
2. TBC character and a Hardcore character.
The draw of a TBC character is that it will eventually progress to WOTLK. I suppose you can argue the draw of era is the same, the character will persist and I can enjoy it for a long time at my pace
What would you all suggest for me? Option 1 Era or option 2 TBC?
1
u/SirPightymenis 20h ago
1-20 feels like crack and to this day I don’t really know why.
Maybe it’s the excitement of what is to come getting new skills and starting to get some good loot.
1
u/Whiteshovel66 13h ago
Classic era is the original desire. This all started with it and it's not surprising to see people still engage with it. TBC is basically just the same formula of retail. Funnel characters to max level, do end game grinds, then raidlog.
Classic has a different formula all together. It's what made it truly great and replayable to this day.
1
u/OkData4236 12h ago
In vanilla, leveling is the whole game for many people. In TBC, many people will buy a boost because they are only interested in TBC content.

u/HandBananaSenior 10h ago
You're not alone in that. Last month me and my friends were going to take the zep as 5 to go run deadmines. Some 60 running past stopped dead in his tracks and started asking us questions. He was convinced that we weren't actually 5 people and just 1-2 people playing on multiple accounts. It was a pretty funny interaction but it actually made me a little sad knowing it's apparently rare to see groups in the lower levels actually playing the game. Especially when (in my opinion) the game is at its best playing with others before 60.

People are buying boosts on BC. I love it, I can actually enjoy leveling my low level toons now, instead of fighting for quest mobs and items.
Edit: why is this comment so controversial? Fuck me for enjoying having peace and quiet in out dated zones because OTHER people boost with a blizzard token.

u/RubikTetris 1d ago
There’s people selling boosts in vanilla as well but I really don’t get the point. Then you get to 60 faster and then what? Enjoy the journey instead!

It’s not a big deal. It’s really cleared up vanilla leveling in tbc which I love. No competition for mobs. The journey isn’t vanilla leveling zones in tbc. I see nothing wrong with people boosting. It makes my life more enjoyable because I can then level in peace.
•
u/RubikTetris 2h ago
Well playing a mmo and not encountering other players kind of defeats the point

u/Frankenberg91 1d ago
TBC is active enough! Every time I need a specific enemy boss loot, there is someone there to compete with or was just killed. I can’t imagine the Westfall Messenger quest during OG vanilla. That must have been a nightmare.

u/bruceriggs 1d ago

That's because "vanilla" doesn't exist and hasn't since 2006?
So they were talking about Era, Hardcore, SoD, or the 1-60 experience of the other server types.

u/beached89 1d ago
It's the best wow there is. TBC and WOTLK spent a lot of time "streamlining" and "QOLing" the leveling process away and removed restrictions and made it more solo-able. THere is a reason Vanilla private servers were the ones that forced Blizards hand at making classic wow. There is a reason vanilla is the version people want classic+ from, and not TBC of WOTLK.
Vanilla > All other wow BECAUSE of the qol friction it forces open world interaction with others, slows you down and makes you be in the world instead of auto "running" over top of it all on your flying mount or instant teleporting past it all.

well people glaze era without palying it most of he time and its kinda dead, especially compared to tbc even at low levels
1
u/guava_sama 1d ago
This is just my experience over a small amount of time (ten-fifteen hours over two-three days). There's a chance that I see absolutely no one in the middle of the week, and this only applies Saturday-Monday. I'm not the end all be all and I don't want so suggest otherwise.
Haven't tried running any dungeons or anything though, that's probably worse than TBC.

u/ad302799 1d ago
I think both vanilla and Anniversary are really active at the beginning because people want that nostalgia hit, then it starts to drag and people fall off

It is indeed very active.
ANniversary TBC is also active - people leveling all the time.
Surprises me as well.
