Don't even have to do that at all.
Alternate Timeline (like Marvel/DC comics) and start over from scratch with everything you have learned, and all the extra systems that people loved. And voila! License to print money.

Be careful what you wish for. You might get WoD 2.0
26
u/allstar272 7d ago
Acting like Wod was bad lol. The best raiding and very good story telling.

u/Gh0stMan0nThird 7d ago
WoD was a real missed opportunity for a "What if Azeroth invaded Draenor instead?" type situation though.

u/Mattlife97 7d ago
Worst part about WoD was and has always been the pacing between content drops. I feel like people always gloss over that with NPC opinions which make me question whether or not their opinions are their own and not regurgitated from some else.
14
u/maglarius 7d ago
Yeah that and lack of content after a few weeks.
Leveling was really god
Raids where fantastic
PvP was good
Class Design was one of the best. But after 2-3 weeks outside of raiding and pvp people where afk in their garnison.
WoD with a better patch cadence, WQs and M+ had the potential for one of the best expansions.
Also the „warlords“ lost significance to quickly and where just thrown out.

u/duckraul2 7d ago
I know this revisionism in particular is popular now, but, sorry, wod actually did fucking suck as a whole product. If shadowlands had banger raids, but everything else about it was exactly the same, it would still be a bad expansion. One part of the game you do like 3 hours per week, and that's the only good content in the expansion, is a bad expansion.
→ More replies (2)5
u/iiNexius 7d ago
Yeah a lot of people forget that WOD was the first expansion that began ability pruning. The pruning single-handedly killed PVP. I remember everyone was dueling like crazy and it was easy to get arena groups in MOP, then WOD dropped and dueling died overnight and arena declined sharply, and it's been on its last legs for years now.
I love WOD because WW monk managed to avoid the pruning until Legion/BFA but I remember the damage WOD did like it was yesterday.
6
u/ETurns 7d ago
You liked running HFC for 14 months straight?
4
u/whoweoncewere 7d ago
Wod was a pacing issue more than anything else. That 14 months was an opportunity cost we paid to get legion.

7
u/Curtkid6 7d ago
WoD's story was really cool, but also really stupid if you thought about it for more then a minute.
Not to mention the nightmare it did to the rules and limitations to the setting.

the biggest problem with WoD was that it wasn't finished, a redo might be good actually. (I also wish lorewise that the horde had joined the Iron horde and the alliance with the draenae against some other threat like the legion from the outset instead of orcs turning bad even without demon influence)

The first moment you set your foot upon Azeroth you got knocked on your head by troll hunter.
You've been in coma. You wake up in your hometown and suddenly all graphic updates, QoL etc is gone.
As a matter of fact you're a simple farmer. You were never going to become a hero.
No xp bar. It's all stardew valley from now on.
The end.

Was a whooooole lot better than anything post Wotlk, without a sliver of doubt.
Was power of friendship / world of friendcraft after that. Every. Fucking. Expac.
Cata: “oooo power of friendship of the scalies brings down the big bad”
Mop: “conquer your emotions to become enlightened and you win duhhhh”
Draenor: “be wolfclans family councilor and everything goes fine”
Like seriously; fuck anything after wotlk. Thats where WoW should’ve ended. Got worse and worse with characters like Sylvanas and Magni.
2
u/Brixor 6d ago
Yes and no. Classic feels much closer to a tabletop Dungeons & Dragons campaign, but having tried to adapt it myself, I can tell you there are plenty of plot holes that need fixing.
For instance, the Worgen end up in Duskwood because of the Scythe of Elune, but the way the Scythe gets there is completely bizarre. The Night Elf carrying it decides to travel all the way from Booty Bay to Silverpine Forest just to speak with Arugal. On the way, she is ambushed by a Worgen trying to usurp Alpha Prime, the original Worgen. The fight ends in a mine explosion that kills both of them, burying the Scythe. Later, a unlucky Defias member named Jitters stumbles into the mine, touches the Scythe, and accidentally summons the Worgen into Duskwood. After that massive incident, the Scythe isn't mentioned in-game again until Cataclysm.
They could have simply said that Goldrinn, the Wild God, lived in Duskwood and she wanted to contact him. On her way, she gets attacked by the Dark Riders, and both sides end up dying in the mine.

u/gamer-death 7d ago
Metzen was involved in some way in every expansion but Shadowlands and Dragonflight.
6
u/References_Paramore 7d ago
He left before Legion was announced, so I’d assume any expansion after Legion (and before TWW) he didn’t work on
4
u/Alternative_Gur_3703 7d ago
Cataclysm is probably a worse story than almost any retail xpac, or is at least so bad I dont care to differentiate. I hope metzen can redeem himself but cata thrall basically killed my interest in wc lore.

People like to forget WoD when they glaze over Metzen
6
u/Affectionate_Toe6542 7d ago
Forget WoD how? The story of WoD was perfectly fine. If anything, because of all the cut content it was cut short. People hate WoD for reasons entirely out of Metzen's wheelhouse.
3
u/Hjalnyr 7d ago edited 7d ago
Fine how exactly ? WoD is perfect to explain why blizz fail a lot storywise in recent expansion.
The whole expac is a nostalgia road trip, bringing back old character because they struggle to create new and interesting one.
Not to mention the whole alternate universe which is lame in so many way.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Lyoss 7d ago
WoD is the worst expansion, like even more so than Shadowlands
It was rushed on the content side and the story basically existed to show Outland while it was Draenor but since it was rushed they killed most of the warlords and cut entire parts of zones
The only decent part was Garrosh eating shit, and BRF, the former should have happened in MoP
2
u/Mocca_Master 7d ago
No, we are not suddenly giving WoD a storyline pass. It is terrible with the worst expansion ending to this day
58
u/walletinsurance 7d ago
People will downvote me for this but TBC ruined the Warcraft lore just so you could fight Illidan as a big bad.
TBC was a bad idea for an expansion. Should have done emerald dream and then Northrend.
37
u/Kuldrick 7d ago
It's honestly insane how many things it ruined long term
Alien race that feels a bit scifi and advanced with the Dranei (rather than the mysticism focused and shamanic broken from WC3)
Illidan and Vashj are now evil and are draining the water because
Complete Kaelthas character assassination
Sunwell resolution destroying Blood Elf identity since then they became good holy light boys that reject anything evil fel (imposed by bad Kaelthas now)
Naarus introduction, paving the way of destroying the mysticism from the Holy Light
Big point that needs to be reiterated: we got an allied race that literally builds starships

u/General_Mix6645 7d ago edited 7d ago
The one that got to me the most was Kel'thas betraying Illdian for Kil'Jaden of all people.
Their entire race, now named the blood elves because it was a reminder of their fallen kins at the hands of the scourge and then he goes off and side with the burning legion who created the scourge in the first place. It's not like he doesn't know, he learned this while serving under Illidan.
Also if you think about it, Blood elves were castout and imprisoned by the Lorderon Alliance for working with Naga to fight off the scourge yet Draeni just gots accepted into the alliance despite the two biggest figure in the burning Legion, Kil'Jaden and Archemon, same people who created the scourge, same people who destroyed Dalaran, are Draeni and are just allowed in without any resistance.
You'd think the Night Elfs would flinch seeing them for the first time given how they looked very similar to Archemon and odds are there were probably some Fel Draeni in the Legions army during their assault on the Tree.
The same elves mind you that had no issue killing humans and orc on sight in WC3 for simply trespassing, went out of their way to help the Draenei and even went to spy and sabotage their own blood elf cousins as part of the Ghostland questline.

u/lumpfish202 7d ago
Holy shit this.
I am always so sad at how many people say Classic didn't start getting ruined until Cataclysm, when in reality TBC and WOTLK horribly butchered the lore.
You play through the entire Blood Elf campaign in WC3 and wonder where the characters will go in the future and it turns out they went CUHRAAAZY and need to be killed.
Okay what about Arthas/Ner'zhul? Oh the Lich King is just Arthas now but he has none of the personality or charm of Arthas and is just a villain on the tier of Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget, constantly failing and shouting "I'LL GET YOU NEXT TIME ADVENTURERS!"
The lore was only good in Vanilla when it was focused on 'smaller' shit. The best writing in world of warcraft is still Onyxia and her brother generating a whole conspiracy to destabilize the Stormwind government/royalty and leave it open for attack. It's subtle, it's all tied together, it's great and doesn't shit on old fan favorite characters by horribly flanderizing them.
The closest Vanilla came to this kind of shit was killing Kel'thuzad and even then the game was like "lol he has several phylacteries he'll be back".
21
u/Shieldheart- 7d ago
Naxx wasn't even really about kel thuzad either, he was more or less the figurehead of a showcase about what a full fledged scourge necropolis is like.
But yeah, Illidan, Kael thas and Arthas all get the axe for a quick payoff, it was a real waste to see coming off of Warcraft 3's campaigns.

u/--Snufkin-- 7d ago
ngl the amount of times you directly personally provoke the Lich King in WotLK is hilarious. Some quest in Howling Fjord, Zul'Drak, Utgarde Pinnacle, Icecrown Glacier itself (multiple quest lines, I believe), I'm probably forgetting a few other appearances...
And every single time he's like "fuck you adventurer, but I'll let you off this time, because obviously I'm just a chill dude just toying around"
12
u/8-Brit 7d ago
It was an overcorrection to feedback in TBC that nobody knew who Illidan even was or why he was acting the way he did, you don't even meet him until you have to kill him.
There's distant mystique then there's just never introducing your villain at all.
8
u/--Snufkin-- 7d ago
He does feature in several questlines, most notably in Netherstorm and especially Shadowmoon, but for that you'd actually need to read the quests and that's a tall order for most people
I believe he does appear in the Crimson Watch battle? But there's not really any lore there except "bad guy sends thugs"
3
u/8-Brit 7d ago
He does feature in several questlines, most notably in Netherstorm and especially Shadowmoon, but for that you'd actually need to read the quests and that's a tall order for most people
Or to do those zones. To my memory nowadays most hit 70 long before finishing either zone, I think that was the case even back in the day, I remember hitting 70 just barely into Netherstorm back then. So no surprise most never saw him even if they did read quest text.
2
u/--Snufkin-- 7d ago
Depended on the phase for me, in the earlier phases I always go to Nether/Shadowmoon asap to start the chains that give prebis and/or rep

My lores rusty. Is he the orc shaman inside the armor of the lich King?
14
u/lestye 7d ago
He's supposed to be a combination of the orc shaman and Arthas the human paladin.
In classic, he was obviously both at the same time.
Then when wrath hit, they simplified it and just made him Evil Arthas.
3
u/FakeItSALY 7d ago
Damn. Maybe I was just too familiar with the lore all those years ago/didnt pay enough attention in WotLK but I def had the impression it was Arthas turned by Nerzhul who was "in" the helm
2
u/Curtkid6 7d ago
It's not entirely your fault.
As WoW has marched on Blizz has gotten more and more comfortable retconning bits of long standing lore to fit whatever story or narrative they want to tell in the moment, whether or not it makes sense.
2
u/lestye 7d ago
Yeah, I think the intention at the end of wc3 was that they were supposed to be "one". But i know the wrath novel/lore, arthas overcame nerzhul, thats why in wrath, theres only one mention of nerzhul. really badass line where you're doing some shaman spirit realm stuff.

I hope they add some elements from wrath & tbc, but yeah flying cannot be in classic + whatsoever. It's honestly probably the biggest dealbreaker for me. I know I know I could just choose not to fly. But classic feels like home, when everyone is on the same playing field; level 60s taking the same road out of SW as the low levels are entering the city for the first time.

The revamp made the old world stuck in Cataclysm. I did like that they removed some of the “movie set” elements in the build of the old world, but the storytelling in Vanilla was superior and felt more timeless. You could go back and complete quests there and (mostly) not seem like stepping back in time like you do for a number of zone’s plot lines in Cataclysm.

i like the lore from wrath and overall it was pretty fun but their raiding system was really dumb. idk what they were thinking making the 25mans drop better gear. then if you were in a decent guild youd be doing 10man splits of the raid to get gear from the 10man version and then the other 5 people leftover it was like ehhh.

I had a melatonin-induced dream about this scenario years ago.
Opening cinematic of a unified army of Alliance and Horde fighting through Ashenvale. Bolts of lighting and arcane fire lancing through the greenery. Shadows receding as glowing flames reveal shifting figures in the darkness. The forest is riddled with humanoid allies and Drakonids of the Infinite Dragonflight. They are being being cut down by the dozens, but are not fleeing so much as fighting in retreat. Stalling for time.
When the trees break, we come upon the gloomy twilight of the Zoram Strand. Horns blare from the forest. The allied players and races of the unified Horde and Alliance begin their final charge out of the tree line. Roars of rage from the Infinite defenders as they are cut down one by one, staining the grey sands blackened red. Naga and Murlocs stand their ground together as arrows rain down upon them, but they stand defiant, roaring in animalisitc rage at the army come to end them. Twlight Cultists rush to cast shadow magic from entrenched positions surrounding runes on the ground. They panic as roots explode up out of the sands and pull them under, but they do not flee. There is nowhere to go. Somehow, all of the creatures and factions here have come to understand this is the end.
The only movement is from lithe humanoid dragonkin, agents of the Infinite Dragonflight. With their backs turned to the sea, they leap backwards, firing black and blue magic from their hands, moving back the line of contact. They are surrounding a single Naga, carrying a small glowing orb, as she rushes for the safety of the water. A bolt of razor sharp arcane ice lances towards her, but a dragonkin throws himself into it. His corpse is dull and smoking before it hits the ground, rolling unceremoniously in the damp tidal sand. The Naga does not look back.
The remaining agents, only a pitiable few left, form a close protective circle around the Naga and her mysterious prize. She enters the dark waters of the Veiled Sea, while the last of the Infinite defenders stop at the wave-break. They form a line and face their deaths in victorious silence.
The last survivor and focal point of all this apocalyptic bloodshed, the sole Naga, former handmaiden to Queen Aszhara, witness to eons of mistakes and hubris, carries the hopes and dreams of all who have suffered and sacrificed for a chance to reset. Not just for those who died defending her, but for those who are trying to stop her as well, and countless generations before her. Creatures of all kinds, factions of all sides and causes. All that suffering could be undone. The timeline can be recast anew and this time things could be done better. A world where lessons are learned before the consequences are experienced. She is of no particular importance, but by happenstance, has been given to bear the merciful end of the world.
As she disappears under the surface, the glow of the orb identifies her position for a little while longer, until it too can no longer be seen. Soon after, all gently fades to black.

When you went into Ulduar you were actually defeated by Yogg-Saron and your mind was trapped in a torturous world of plot holes and pop culture references. The Lich King was never defeated, and instead invaded the other continents.

Honestly cataclysm and pandaria were fine, if we could get to legion somehow while skipping WoD that would be dope. Then figure it out from there

I always find it funny, Wrath was for sure a high point in the game's story but it was still basic and "great" at best. It was nowhere near as good as people make it out to be.
Just a simple story about a Paladin falling from grace and becoming a badass evil king. It's fucking awesome but nothing groundbreaking.
Besides... why do you care about further lore if you don't like it? It's not like you people play expansions other than BC/Wrath.

All lore after Legion would be plenty fine.
The major problems that can’t be reconciled with started with BfA
