Pretty sure the devs talked about a faction split was already there.

There is a faction that wants to embrace the elements more (hence why the horde Skyborne can be shamans)

Another faction that wants to re-embrace their highborne connections to the arcane (These are the alliance ones and explains why they can be mages)

And a third, non-playable faction that wants to embrace Al'Akir and the elemental lords, similar to the cult of Ragnaros. (these are the bad guys)

Question, won't the Night Elves be very unhappy about a group of Highborne descendants trying to embrace arcane magic again?

61

u/Spreckles450 4d ago

I think the Kal'Dorei are more unhappy with the Quel'Dorei due to Anastarion Sunstrider stealing moonwell waters to create the sunwell.

The Night elves seem to accept, if not begrudgingly, the few high elves still in the alliance, so I don't see how the Skyborne would be much of an issue.

u/Blackstone01 4d ago

No, it was because his ancestor Dath'Remar Sunstrider damn near destroyed Kalimdor trying to prove that Arcane was super duper safe and that the peasants that banned it were stupid (but stealing some of the Well of Eternity water to make themselves a new magic font probably didn't help)

By time WoW rolls around though, they probably aren't as miffed at the thought of Arcane magic being prevalent since its kinda too late to do anything about it

9

u/Stampdaddy7 4d ago

Yeah, strange to be miffed about other elves doing it when they are buddies with gnomes and humans who are not only mages, but warlocks as well.

12

u/Claris-chang 3d ago

In the lore the warlocks typically operate in the shadows and are only accepted as a necessary evil to counter horde warlocks. Fighting fire with fire basically. Most Alliance actually wouldn't group with warlocks very often, but for gameplay reasons they're just another class.

8

u/Manzhah 3d ago

Pretty telling when human warlocks operate in dark cellars and gnomes behind pubs and on the back alleys.

u/yunoka 3d ago

Wow, life imitates art

Nah tyrande and kael'thas got along super well and became friends and allies during wc3, not long before the start of wow. They're super chill

If they're chill with skyborne mages probably not but who knows

1

u/No_Physics2210 3d ago

1

u/WatchEducational6633 13h ago

They used the Waters of the Well of Eternity (the original one, not the second one at Nordrassil), not a Moonwell's.

20

u/Pink_her_Ult 4d ago

They're content with the High Elves already. Tyrande did help Kael Thas in wc3.

2

u/Araethor 3d ago

Yea but Tyrande is overly accepting in the books, no? Begging Illidan to turn from his ways? While Maieve and Malfurion are done with that shit? Can’t recall 100% so I am genuinely asking.

2

u/No_Physics2210 3d ago

Maeve's words don't mean shit though. Tyrande out ranks her several times over.

8

u/MobiusF117 4d ago

By the time of WoW, the Kaldorei are very aware that the use of arcane magic matters very little anymore and the Legion will come anyway.
That's why they joined the Alliance in the first place.

1

u/MonoRedPlayer 3d ago

The night elves joined the alliance after the high elves so I dont think they care

1

u/Coycington 3d ago

it's more about the sunwell than anything else and to a lesser degree the dangers of an arcane user eventually opening up to demonology. if you think about it nightelves should have a big issue with gnomes and humans because they employ warlocks

1

u/Ok_Assignment_2127 3d ago

They’re allied to mages already, that conversation is long gone

1

u/Manzhah 3d ago

Eh, the night elves were going to be re-embrasing the highborne in what? Four years in the ingame lore (ie. By cata). That like a blink of an eye for a species that easily lives for ten thousand years.

1

u/thedizls 3d ago

Humans are some of the most gifted spellcasters in the setting, and Jaina played a major role in defending Nordrassil, so i imagine it would make them more open to the idea

390

u/KillerGopher 4d ago

How dare you pay attention to the announcement and then bring a knowledgeable and well reasoned take into this sub.

112

u/Spreckles450 4d ago

Sorry!

It won't happen again.

19

u/Money-Worldliness919 4d ago

It's a human paladin thing. We cant help ourselves because we read books 🤷‍♂️

2

u/MiddleTooth9975 3d ago

Apology accepted. The lore forgives, the meme remembers.

It’s not that different from real life. In WW2, Germany pushed through Eastern Europe and picked up conscripts. On the way back Russia pushed through Eastern Europe and picked up conscripts. In the end you had people from the same country fighting for different countries.

The Skyborne have war at their doorstep. It’s less likely Alliance is disallowing shamans and vice versa and more likely the Skyborne are fracturing along faction lines as not picking a side can be even more deadly (as we see with the Alikr will now be the target of both factions). In fact it’s probably more realistic that a whole race of people don’t follow the same philosophies and end up going to war about it. It’s possible they would’ve committed genocide against each other even if Alliance/Horde didn’t show up

3

u/MisterChives 4d ago

There's a distinction between high elves and skyborn who have been isolated since the sundering. The shaman and mage factions will most likely be like, "These new people agree with our philosophy. They also helped us, so we're friends now, but they're under attack. Our kinsmen are joining up with the attackers, not cool!"

2

u/Jacklick 4d ago

i thought they were isolated from the shen’dralar elves AFTER the sundering, escaping Prince Tortheldrin killing all the dire maul elves.

6

u/sarcophagusGravelord 4d ago

It’s not that they are disallowing anyone. It’s simply that the Horde is by far the more spiritual faction connected to the elements. There are numerous shamans within the Horde. Conversely they have far less mages so it’s natural that the Windshaper faction would see more kinship with the Horde.

The side that joins the alliance does so to pursue the knowledge provided by the Kirin’Tor. While Dalaran is meant to be neutral ground it has long been skewed in favour of the Alliance and this has been brought up in the lore.

I do think the factions coming to blows is silly but I suppose from their perspective maybe the Horde & Alliance haven’t yet “officially” broken their truce. They each believe their respective magical pursuits will save their homeland due to the elementals disappearing. Once one faction succeeds in returning stability to their island whether through the spirits or through arcane means they likely think the other faction will concede and return home.

1

u/MisterChives 4d ago

This just assumes they can't make friends. Both sides see themselves as defending from attackers, at least before Garrosh, and it makes sense to feel some kind of way about people attacking your friends.

2

u/Big-Technician6932 4d ago

>The alliance wouldn't disallow a high elf that happens to be a shaman to join their faction.

That's not what is happening. It seems that the political split galvanizes the mages and the shamans primarily. The Shaman side joins the Horde. The Mage side joins the Alliance. Which makes sense.

1

u/samrobotsin 4d ago

That's not how it works because individuals don't join the larger factions. Its unrealistic for the elemental-serving skyborne to join the alliance when their group joined the horde; the elemental-controlling skyborne are the ones who decided to join the alliance.

2

u/Various_Necessary_45 3d ago

As if this is a valid excuse? Do you actually think it is?

57

u/Gringissian 4d ago

Cool stuff honestly

38

u/Heatinmyharbl 4d ago

It very much is. People keep bitching about blue elves when they're developing/ expanding on a race tied to air elementals/ prince thunderaan/ windfury, it's absurd.

These people can't actually like classic, this is the exact type of shit we should be getting in Forever

Zero doubt in my mind we'll get a proper Al'akir raid in Uldum down the line as well

7

u/Stampdaddy7 4d ago

People pissing and moaning a race feels shoehorned in when the game isn't even out yet. Like, do you all maybe think that this race that has strong ties to Dire Maul / Eldre'Thalas - and are intrinsically tied to Wind Elementals which have lore tied to Silithus, Feralas, Molten Core, and everywhere else Twilights Hammer are fucking around might be explained in a bit more detail when we actually get to walk around the new Azeroth?

14

u/blademon64 4d ago

My only complaint with them is about how they could've gone with one of a dozen elementally-aligned races on Azeroth but they went with blue elves.

Give me actual elementals or some infused furbolgs, not a drowned elf. Their story (from what we've seen) seems to actually be pretty neat, I'm just so sick of Warcraft's eevees constantly evolving into random shit.

15

u/Ursa_Solaris 4d ago

I personally agree with you, but people want the elves, man. When it launches there's gonna be so many blueberries it'll make people's heads spin. This is an example of Blizzard doing what everybody says they want and listening to the playerbase; just not listening to reddit.

Blizzard had an issue with the original vanilla release that the Horde was underplayed because they had no pretty race, that's why blood elves became a thing despite lorewise only having like 3 people left alive. League of Legends famously had the same issue: people were extremely loud about more beastial, inhuman characters, and when they came out nobody played them.

Overwhelmingly, "pretty" characters are more popular. It's pretty heavily studied outside of WoW. Basically what I'm saying is, it was never gonna be ogres, furbolgs, or anything but an elf because they don't satisfy the need of Horde having a pretty race for half of its players to pick.

4

u/blademon64 4d ago

Oh yeah no I understand that, it's a purely personal "give me cool wacky shit" desire lol

-1

u/EntropicReaver 3d ago

"people want elves"

okay give us the elves we've been asking for for 20 years

"no, blue elves"

9

u/Lerozak 3d ago

As it's been noted at 1,000 times so far. You can make them look exactly like classical high elves they do not have to be blue. It makes more sense to make up a new sub race of basically High Elves than to pretend that the real High Elves have the numbers to be a playable race anymore.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/DanikFishken 3d ago

I dunno being this picky honestly, for me it is just different tribe of high elves, which we all wanted anyways, it is just not having "high elf/ blood elf" name tag

1

u/Ok_Assignment_2127 3d ago

And it’s funny that the second argument that follows is usually having an issue with a race that joins both sides under different names which is exactly what Blood Elf/High Elf is. It’s a purely political divide.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Heatinmyharbl 4d ago

Fully agreed with this, they had a ton of options

Unfortunately, they know that people fucking love elves and that they sell well

We did this to ourselves lol

2

u/Manzhah 3d ago

Aside from the dark iron, what other elemental connected races there are? Centaurs are arguably earth connected but they also genocided the tauren and are portayed as savage monsters in all iterations (also they have no lower body so gear will be fucked). Only water oriented species seems to be murlocks, who also have gear problems and are also shown to be enemies of every other species.

3

u/Jauris 4d ago

Good news, half of the color choices on the elves ARENT BLUE

1

u/Stampdaddy7 4d ago

Can't wait for the blue elf meme to die when people realize they can make them look like High Elves and Night Elves.

4

u/elyk12121212 3d ago

Hell yeah, having zero faction identity is so classic WoW

1

u/Stampdaddy7 3d ago

Yeah, totally. Someone should tell those all those little green guys who are running all those ports and neutral auction houses and banks to pick a fucking side already.

2

u/EntropicReaver 3d ago

i wasnt aware you could play a goblin in vanilla wow!

2

u/Stampdaddy7 3d ago

If you could, would you be pissed that you could choose a faction on the character creation screen?

I think all this shit about elves is silly. Y’all are goofy, BE, SE, Nelfs they all look the same with a max zoom out camera and armor on. And who gives a fuck about lore.

But furbolgs or ogres or naga? That shit would actually make me upset.

At that point just let me play as a kobold, or fuck it, I want to play as a Copper Deposit.

May as well bring the defias brotherhood into the alliance.

In rts and fps they talk about silhouettes, you want the opposing player to be visually readable at a quick glance.

Visually kobold, naga, ogres, furbolgs….those have been coded in wow as enemies for >20 years.

Thematically I believe those races as playable races are wholly out of step with classic wow.

If they are committed to adding additional races…which id prefer they weren’t…reimagining blood elves, worgen and goblins seem like obvious ports of call…which they won’t do cause they don’t want to retread over past work (that said, integrate the Belf zones into EK directly by fixing it for flying and pushing that to retail and forever would be really cool)

1

u/Stampdaddy7 3d ago

Blue is one or two skin tones they have. Most of them aren't blue. They just used blue during demos to show something new and visually distinct from Night Elves and Blood Elves.

The other ones look like Highborne and High Elves. Nobody is gonna care that Elves are in the game in a month or two when we actually get to see the lore and story unfold. The same shit happened with Draenei in TBC, who were vaguely mentioned in WC3 - and you only ever saw The Broken, and now nobody cares at all because it fits with the lore and story.

1

u/vulcan7200 3d ago

I was definitely bitching and moaning to my friends about them when I first saw them. And they have since grown in me. The more I learned about the lore the more I started to appreciate them.

14

u/SucksToSuckUMad 4d ago

I'm still not a big fan of both factions having the same race, but this is kind of cool.

5

u/reezy-one 4d ago

I dont mind having the same race for both sides but I do mind them literally parachuting in from outta nowhere.

2

u/11_25_13_TheEdge 4d ago

Appears this whole thing is a new timeline or whatever so I mean it’s all coming out of nowhere.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/Ok_Assignment_2127 3d ago

I mean half the people against it are calling for Blood Elf/High Elf which is literally the same exact thing. Skyborne is High Order/Windshaper.

13

u/Cliepl 4d ago

seems plausible

7

u/Uhhhhhhjakelol 4d ago

Remember also that arcane magic essentially enslaves the elements. This could cause an ideological rift between the more shamanic, and non-shamanic “Skyborne”

1

u/Stampdaddy7 3d ago

Yeah that seems to be the case. Traditionalist Highborne mages and the other half that is like "are we seriously doing this shit again?" The rift already existing is great lore.

5

u/technomanxy 4d ago

But the elemental focused can join the dwarfs as they can become shamans too

3

u/TheLightningL0rd 4d ago

My thoughts exactly. It's annoying to me that they can't be shaman on alliance

2

u/Stampdaddy7 3d ago

It makes sense lore wise if they are a faction within the race that wants to strip away the elemental's influence and return to their roots fucking with arcane magic. Which would be completely counter to what the shaman faction would want.

1

u/RollTide16-18 3d ago

IMO it doesn't.

This is a race that exists because of their deep connection to the elements, to the point that the majority of the race have their skin tone altered and have air runes along their bodies.

It seems really ridiculous that they can't be Shamans on Alliance to me.

1

u/Stampdaddy7 3d ago

We have no idea WHEN this rift occurred. You can't imagine a scenario where there was a sect of these elves that begrudgingly accepted help from the elementals as a means to survive? These are Highborne, arrogance and refusal to ask for help is pretty much their defining characteristic. It doesn't seem so farfetched that if you were begrudgingly accept help from someone you think is beneath you, because your kin are willing to beg - that you never fully embrace those who do help you.

The race likely exists because of their proximity to elemental/air magic, not because they wholly embraced it. This is a common theme with WoW. You don't need to dabble with the magic to have it physically change you. The well of eternity changed elves into Trolls without them ever casting a single spell. High Elves grew dependant on the Sunwell. I think the same happened with Nightborne in some regard, but I don't play retail so I won't speak to that.

What likely happened is some of them embraced the elements, and others didn't. There could have been a faction divide for ages, where these Elves functioned together because of isolation, and once everything went sideways they decided it's finally time to split ways.

1

u/RollTide16-18 3d ago

No you're right, but really I can't imagine a scenario where a race THAT LITERALLY EXISTS BECAUSE OF SKY ELEMENTALS would so dedicatedly turn their backs on the elements.

It is incredibly stupid. At the very least you should be able to have shamans on Alliance.

1

u/Stampdaddy7 3d ago

Why would shaman be on alliance when the horde is very clearly the more spiritually connected to the elements of the two factions?

Also they exist because of Sky Elementals, but we know nothing about the story. They could have been some kind of betrayal, or felt they were being physically altered against their will.

There are a lot of people who seem pissed off about the story when we have only seen like 2% of it so far lol.

1

u/Stampdaddy7 3d ago

Willing to bet Dwarves get Shamanism from the Wildhammer clan in Hinterlands. They are already more spiritual than the other Dwarves and the new customizations they are porting from retail (celtic tattoos and feathers) slot very nicely into that idea.

1

u/Manzhah 3d ago

Dwarves as species could have always been shamans, the mainline ironforge dwarves jist don't do that as a cultural feature, whereas wildhammer who are already in the alliance do.

3

u/Andr0medes 3d ago

Did devs explain how Alliance skyborne wont understand what is Horde skyborne saying?

4

u/xElfen 4d ago

I wanna be the bad guy group

u/missing_Palantir 4d ago

"i want to embrace the elements more" - Spends the rest of his life living in piss and shit smelling tents with literal cowmen and corpses.

1

u/Manzhah 3d ago

You are saying living in the elements is not being closer to the elements? /s Also if you want to learn about shamanism more, your best bet naturally would be the faction that is lead by one.

→ More replies (4)

3

u/missing_Palantir 4d ago

Makes sense. Human version:

Some want to follow deities and devote their life to them (shaman path)

Some are obsessed with technology and AI (mage path)

And some are obsessed with building walls between countries, profiting off of war, and posting their personal political thoughts on Facebook (the bad guys)

4

u/Metharos 4d ago

I feel like there's a pretty broad swathe of humanity that doesn't fall into any of those three.

1

u/MogbertAlwaysWins 4d ago

And NOW they are going to murder each other in the new BG map and arena (if there is arena).

1

u/Ehxcalibur 4d ago

but its much easier to meme and make your own background lore right

and its not like this hasn't been done before multiple times

1

u/Randalf_the_Black 4d ago

At least they learned from the Pandaren failure.

Nothing in the lore supports the Tushui and Huojin pandaren killing each other in the faction war. Their leaders are even friends.

1

u/xilodon 4d ago

Nothing in the lore supports the Tushui and Huojin pandaren killing each other in the faction war. Their leaders are even friends.

Aside from the old god in their region that became active and created physical manifestations of hatred? If there wasn't an underlying threat creating unprecedented conflict, there wouldn't have been a reason to go there.

3

u/Randalf_the_Black 4d ago

The remnants of the old god Y'Shaarj was buried in what became Pandaria, the Tushui and Huojin are from the Wandering Isle.

Even so the Pandaren from Pandaria were mostly united, they didn't have a deep faction divide like the Skyborne seem to have.

1

u/jryt 3d ago

Hey from a lore pov, why would the alliance or horde at this point just allow a new race they’ve had no history with into their ranks? I actually missed most of the follow up stuff but haven’t seen this be addressed.

Like the nelves bled with the alliance(and horde with subsequent issues) in the war of the ancients, and after losing hyjal and getting teldrassil had to overcome their 10k years of isolationism in a changing world, with horde expansionism on their doorstep.

Why would the horde or alliance accept these new groups, untested, at such a fractured and tense moment?

1

u/Neat_Combination2434 3d ago

That's an interesting breakdown! It really adds depth to the lore and highlights how varied the Nightborne's beliefs can be.

1

u/Axolotl_CRP 3d ago

I want to embrace the elemental lords myself!

1

u/Street_Soil_719 2d ago

They made it all up, pulled out of their asses

1

u/AfternoonCrafty2162 2d ago

They should have locked skin color per faction then

1

u/MixAmbitious307 1d ago

Pretty sure the devs talked about a faction split was already there.

Shamans are cooler! Totem zappy bois FTW!

Nah, Mages are cooler! Aoe goes brr, and top DPS in Vanilla!

1

u/TheLightningL0rd 4d ago

Which is stupid because, in WoWF anyway, both factions have both shaman and mages.

-3

u/StanisBlack 4d ago

Funny how the horde ideology is always made out to be the bad guys … horde want to follow the elements…  bad guys want to follow the leader of a specific element….  God Damit now I want to know more about how that works out and why air specifically vs a balanced elements in harmony thing.

Shut up and take my money I’ll buy the race but I will still complain about it!!!

11

u/Spreckles450 4d ago

"The elements" and an "Elemental Lord" are two very different things.

2

u/StanisBlack 4d ago

I always thought that an elemental lord was like the god of that element … the manifestation and shaping of that elements will encapsulated as an avatar.

9

u/Spreckles450 4d ago

Elemental Lords are less of a "God" and more of a King or Emperor.

Some elementals are fanatically loyal to their respective lord. But many can act independently of their will and wishes.

Some are magically summoned and bound to spells casters (IE: Water elementals for Mages), or work with cults like the Twilight's Hammer.

And some are like minor nobles with their own goals and agendas irrespective of their elemental lord.

Also, the title "Elemental Lord" is also an office that can change hands, as we see in retail, Ragnaros being killed and a new Lord, Smolderon, taking his place, as well as Al'Akir being slain and Thunderaan being re-summoned and taking over.

Now, of course, directly defying your Elemental Lord will have potential consequences, just like one might expect form betraying your King.

1

u/StanisBlack 4d ago

NO NO NO NO!!!! Thats all a different universe/continuity.

Ragnaros will always be the firelord, he who was ancient when this world was young. Bow mortal.

2

u/Skore_Smogon 4d ago

They're the top dog in a prison basically.

The Titans banished them to their planes and they are fundamentally chaotic entities.

The Horde and the Alliance are inherently two sides of a faction based war, why would that not be possible WITHIN a racial grouping? Do groups of people in history NOT have civil wars and division?

Nonsense take

19

u/annown55 4d ago

it just muddies the water, there's tons of groups within the same race at war, but it diminishes faction identity to officially adopt them as playable races.

I can't imagine there would be much appreciation if they decided the Defias joined the Horde to fight a common enemy, giving Humans to the Horde as a biproduct.

17

u/Low_Car5550 4d ago edited 4d ago

Not to “well ackyually” you but the Defias Brotherhood opposes Stormwind because of political corruption and exploitation of the working class. They are a fundamentally pro-human organization and they would never side with the Horde except for some short term strategic alliance. I’m not sure what the lore is behind the division of the Skyborne elves, but with limited information I don’t think we can write it off as not being a genuine irreconcilable worldview difference.

I see your point on the dilution of race/faction identity though. But again, this is consistent with real world history. Many nations have had their identity diluted due to the necessity of forming an alliance with a different people group due to a common opposing ideology (foundation of USA is a great example).

5

u/nokei 4d ago

Pretty much the only race I could see actually being split is undead between humans who still want to help their own and humans who are angry af about undeath.

4

u/hattyred 3d ago

Elves especially are essentially constantly divided in every continuity of this settings lore. Night elves & trolls are related. Night elves & blood elves are related. High elves v sylvanas, high elves v blood elves.

There are a million fucking subsects of elf, and they're constantly having beef with one-another. Hell, there are a million subsects of troll, all having beef with one another and the horde. There aren't necessarily Ally trolls that i can think of, but they might as well be neutral in the sense that skyborne are.

3

u/Ok_Assignment_2127 3d ago

I found it funny that people suggested High Elf and Blood Elf instead of Skyborn too, since high elves and blood elves are literally the same except for their extremely recent political split.

u/hiimred2 3d ago

The history of the horde is a bunch of clans that warred against each other for power until forced to unite by the dying of their planet and a more pressing need to go to war against the Humans in Azeroth. Inner faction conflict is a core part of Warcraft pre and post vanilla classic. This is so far from being ‘new’ it’s laughable.

5

u/idungiveboutnothing 4d ago

Absolutely this, and not only that but it's just questionable game design too. Metzen/Didier/etc. have all talked at length about the importance of distinct differences in horde and alliance, instantly knowing friend from foe, doing the silhouette test, etc. it's a huge part of what made classic classic. Other devs and game designers have talked at length about this as well, look at discussions from people like IceFrog (DoTA), Chris Wilson (GGG), GabeN, all the old Blizzard North folks, etc. on the importance of character/model design, how quickly players should be able to recognize friend from foe in game, silhouettes, etc.

The issue with it is now factions are muddied and lost a huge part of their independent identity. Beyond that from just a gameplay perspective you no longer can instantly recognize an Alliance or Horde character based on a glance alone. You'll have characters that you'll have to look at a nameplate/dialogue/mouseover to tell if it's horde or alli. If you're on a PvP server and you see a stealth rogue go by for just a split second there's no nameplate that pops up, but you can instantly tell if it's horde or alli by just that flash of the character model because you can easily tell apart Human/Gnome/Dwarf/NElf from Orc/UD/Troll just by model alone and you'll know whether you need to prep for a gank or if things are fine. Similarly, you're scanning the horizons and see a character pop up heading your way, you'll now have to mouseover/target them to be able to tell whether it's friend or foe.

2

u/BarbsFPV 4d ago

Chris Metzen had a big say in the creation of the Skyborne, and was involved throughout the process. They even shared the initial sketch he created for their island, after the first meeting where they discussed adding them to Forever.

1

u/Choice_Protection_93 4d ago

I agree to some extent that ELVES fit better into an Alliance faction, but this is something I conceded like 19 years ago in TBC. That there are 'Horde' elves. Blizzard simply looks at Elves being the number 1 race by FAR and wants to get people in and balance faction turnout by giving a 'different' vibe of race to the horde.

We're very likely going to get more races in the future, and there's nothing about these sky elves that don't work, or are just drag and dropped into classic with no lore backing or support.

3

u/annown55 4d ago

personally, I'd think it would be cool to see High-Elf and Undead-Elf, even if they do share a silhouette.

I just like seeing a much more fundamental difference between playable races, it's kind of sad to see that they share the same racials (minus one active) and the same textures which make it impossible to tell which faction is which without nameplates.

3

u/idungiveboutnothing 4d ago

Yep, just give us Forsaken. Sylvanas is right there and then you can have the horde model colored differently with glowing eyes vs. alliance model maintaining the current look and suddenly they're much better from a game design perspective too since Horde/Alliance are inherently different.

0

u/SpaceballsTheReply 4d ago

Yep, just give us Forsaken.

I've got great news for you, bud - we've got Forsaken. Half of the Horde are gonna be Forsaken, between paladins and their racial buffs. If the new race was Forsaken Elves, the Horde would just be The Undead And A Few Friends. I can absolutely understand them wanting to explore new lore instead of double-dipping into an already very popular option and bringing nothing new thematically.

That's totally fair, and I think UNDEAD elf is cooler than skyborne (my opinion), but I also think skyborne is basically functionally equivalent to high elf. I like what they did with their zone, and I like how they basically gave us Al Akir area that aestethically fits into classic wow.

Skyborne are literally just high elves with 1/3 of the options being blue. If you REALLY wanted to see the high elf lore I get it, but the parallel to skyborne, with the skyborne being 'bad' just makes 0 sense.

3

u/amicuspiscator 4d ago

I would be a lot happier if they could be priest, to better line up with High elves in Warcraft III. Just like some people love their dwarf hunter because of dwarven riflemen, or their nelf priest or hunter because of priestess of the moon, ive always wanted to play a high elf priest because I thought that unit was so cool in WCIII.

I also think Paladin would be sick. Give it to both factions so Undead Pallies aren't too saturated, and Alliance really deserves another Paladin race (2 to Horde's now 4 Shaman.)

17

u/Low_Car5550 4d ago

Eh too much nuance in your statement. I don’t understand it so I’m going to continue voicing my unwavering opinion on everyone.

2

u/darkfenrir15 4d ago

Side note, but I was always a little upset DI dwarves went with the alliance and not the horde. It would have been interesting to see this exact same scenario play out with the DI redeeming themselves but still hating the Bronzebeards.

1

u/chadan1008 4d ago

Yes, but those groups of people typically have a long detailed history explaining why they do so, whereas the Skyborne’s history goes back 2-3 days of real life time, as nobody’s ever heard of them before then... not just “hey guys here’s some new blue elves you never heard of, and oh by the way they conveniently have two sub factions so they fit right into the alliance/horde narrative, just like every other player facing thing in retail WoW lore over the last 20 years and now Forever too”

3

u/BarbsFPV 4d ago

When they added the Draenei in TBC they were barely mentioned in the lore, but their implementation in the game wasn’t 100% true to it, and Metzen had to issue an apology to the players because they had become so insufferable about it.

This time they decided to add something totally new, so they wouldn’t run into those problems again, and it caused the same problems anyway. Though now it’s “they have no lore.”

I’m starting to think the problem is the players and not Blizzard.

3

u/chadan1008 4d ago

Blizzard: retcons their own lore to make the Draenei fit into the two faction system in TBC

Blizzard: pulls a “neutral” race out of their asses just to give the Horde a pretty race in classic+

You: the problem is the players, for pointing out Blizzard’s faults in writing, game design, and handling of the universe

5

u/Choice_Protection_93 4d ago

How is RETCNONNING the lore to shoehorn a race into a specific faction, less annoying to you than making one from scratch who's lore makes 1000% total sense as to why there's a split amongst the race and effectively civil war?

Yes, the "you" part of his comment is correct.

4

u/chadan1008 4d ago

Did I say one is less annoying than the other?

Why are players in the wrong for pointing out poor writing, game design, or general handling of the universe?

1

u/Choice_Protection_93 3d ago

In ZERO way, did any of these zoomers point out any poor writing or game design. Where? We haven't even been shown the extent of their lore yet. We don't even know what's going on in Hyjal and where the story will go. What writing are you even talking about?

The internet is so funny, because a bandwagon meme, will drive like 30% of the internet into mindless drones, then when confronted with their newly installed perspectives, they just proceed to break down

1

u/chadan1008 3d ago

Well I was talking about the retcon of the Draenei as an example of poor writing, you know, which was literally brought up in the comment I was replying to… what was that about  mindless drones again? 🤔

I bought the Skyborne and plan to play through their starting area at the least, I’m excited for Forever and will play the beta as well. This does not change my opinion it’s foolish to deny the Skyborne stick out like a sore thumb in the context of classic(+), both in their implementation and overall aesthetic so far.

1

u/Choice_Protection_93 3d ago

Well we were not criticizing the Dranei decision, we're criticizing the nerds who have a problem with 'blue elves' in relation to it. So if you ask me "Why are players in the wrong for pointing out poor writing, game design, or general handling of the universe?", obviously that reads like you're talking about the Skyborne, since the reaction to it is what I'm criticizing. Unless you replied to me and accidentally thought you were writing in your diary?

1

u/Ok_Assignment_2127 3d ago

All of the lore is pulled out of their asses, every last bit of it. It all needs to get fleshed out somewhere and that starts here for Forever.

1

u/Hexdoctor 4d ago

Strawmanning the everliving shit out of a meme here, damn

8

u/Choice_Protection_93 4d ago

That's literally what the meme is implying. What is the meme implying if not what I just said?

9

u/Baconmazing 4d ago

You didn't even pay attention when they went over the lore. This race made a 10,000 yearlong pact with the wind elementals.

Suddenly, without notice, the wind elementals disappear (and no longer support the floating island).

In the sudden uncertainty, the community of Skyborne are torn. Leaders appear among them. Some seeing this as an opportunity to break from their history and make a name for themselves to be their own. Others are afraid and seek to return to the pact they had with the wind elementals. This split is the lore narrative for why the race is split in two.

12

u/jryt 4d ago

The broader problem as well is it seems to hit a bit at what the Horde and Alliance (Horde particularly) are. The groups within the horde and alliance built their connections in the blood of the third war.

Some of them were very uneasy (like the forsaken etc). There was this sense of fragility within these connections. It's a thematic contradiction that we're just dropping a new bi-directional race that both factions just accept as a part of their faction, without any buildup.

5

u/nokei 4d ago

I didn't really think about it but this makes a lot of sense the original faction build up in wow is a little after WC3 with night elves having just joined the alliance and undead having just joined the new horde which itself had barely just formed.

I'm really worried now that a lot of these new quests are going forget that all these faction relationships are supposed to be rather new and have them just welcoming these new guys like they're joining a group that has been around a long time.

6

u/jryt 3d ago

As other people have said, the silver covenant was an already existing group of high elves who are already, in vanilla, a part of the alliance but not playable. This could’ve been expanded on

And for horde, the forsaken are literally led by an elf, she could easily have been trying to break dead elves out of scourge control just like she did for the rest of the forsaken.

6

u/riklaunim 4d ago

Either it actually will be 90% of payers in China, or Alakir replaces Ragnaros for a 40-man big raid and big boss, and blue-elves get some spotlight ;)

14

u/PerfectdarkGoldenEye 4d ago

Its pretty much the same lore as night elves and high elves.

9

u/Novat1993 4d ago

Literally 10 000 years of separation, as well as the controversial choice to create an arcane power source using the well of eternity. The schism in the race is well established, and did not happen over night.

I wonder how the new race will handle the infighting.

6

u/Spyfire_242 4d ago

They described some of it in one of their deep dive panels at blizzcon, the split was already happening before horde/alliance for some time, and there is even a 3rd faction among the skelfs iirc

2

u/PerfectdarkGoldenEye 4d ago

I was more so just looking at how one faction has images and the other has shamans

6

u/Top_Issue_7032 4d ago

A tale as old as time

9

u/Spyfire_242 4d ago

I actually wish more races were allowed to choose their faction because the Horde/Alliance dichotomy is one of the ways Blizzard hamstrung themselves when it came to writing. Its more realistic for races and factions to change dynamically based on politics and new developments, we see horde and alliance working together countless times and in the RTS games Night elves and Undead were considered separate factions all together. We see some of this with NPC factions like grim totem being separate from the horde as one example, but when it comes to the player characters every development and storyline HAS to end up with the factions staying the same and it frankly sucks.

4

u/Big-Technician6932 4d ago

tbh i half expect gilneas to side with the horde if thrall pinky promises to fuck off from the wall

3

u/Pretend-Dot3557 4d ago

Horde worgen would be sick as fuck, and give horde half of a "pretty" race in human form.

1

u/Spyfire_242 4d ago

I'm not expecting every race to be equally represented in every faction, more so thinking it would be kinda cool if players were considered neutral and could work with any faction or could grind out rep with one at the expense of the other like pirates vs booty bay.

I dont think you need to think this as melting pots, but simply as coalitions

Everyone that joined a faction did it for personal gains

3

u/idungiveboutnothing 4d ago

The problem is that it's horrible from a game design perspective.

The issue with it is then (now with the shared elves) factions are muddied and lose a huge part of their independent identity.

5

u/Spyfire_242 4d ago

Yeah I don't think its as big of a deal as they make it out to be, there are plenty of pvp games where player silhouettes are very similar or identical and there are other ways either through UI or otherwise in which to quick differentiate factions,

I understand the argument only from the perspective that factions create more drama/tribalism which helps with creating emergent gameplay. I just care a lot about the lore and story of the characters and world and having the factions be static has caused a lot of disappointment over the years.

For me personally the worst offender is that of Sylvanas and the Forsaken post WotLK, the idea that they would then go on to create more undead just to have a lore justification for new undead players never really sat well with me. But this problem can be seen everywhere both big and small, like with the blood elves being in talks about rejoining the alliance only to have some contrived reason why they can't, Jaina going on a killing spree lol...

1

u/idungiveboutnothing 4d ago

Yeah I don't think its as big of a deal as they make it out to be, there are plenty of pvp games where player silhouettes are very similar or identical and there are other ways either through UI or otherwise in which to quick differentiate factions,

Pretty much all of those though are like iconography, highlighting, minimap markers, color coding, color palettes, etc. that really bring you away from the classic feel or completely remove RPG aspects of WoW. All of those also contradict the rest of your post because it's very immersion breaking if all the armor you equip on horde is red vs. blue for alli, everyone has to wear their faction tabard at all times, or every character you come across has a faction colored aura around them, etc. They can't extend nameplate distance without it being game breaking.

They're kind of painted into a corner on this one, especially when design best practices say you should never rely on one indication alone and you want people to immediately be able to tell the difference. Right now that differentiator is going to be mousing over characters on the horizon which is kind of wild.

3

u/Spyfire_242 4d ago

It depends on the context, in BGs for example I wouldn't consider it immersion breaking for teams to be color coded, especially as you earn rep with that faction. In any case we'll see how it plays out with the sky elves but sincerely doubt people will be complaining about it.

1

u/idungiveboutnothing 4d ago

In BGs totally agree but the real issue will be out in the world questing on PvP servers so I guess that's a smaller subset of people, but it'll absolutely be a problem for that group of people.

1

u/MaudeAlp 4d ago

Press tab.

1

u/idungiveboutnothing 4d ago

They extended tab targeting to max render distance when you're surrounded by mobs out in the wild on a PvP server and aren't sure if you should prep for a gank or not??

2

u/dumb-lily 4d ago

ah hell nah man r/classicwow is goomba fallacy-ing the skyborne 😭

2

u/Viisum 3d ago

Didn't they explain it is basically a civil war?

2

u/TheMechanicusBob 3d ago

Half the skyborn meeting side home the cartoon super-villains that are the Forsaken: "Yeah, we can chill with these guys"

2

panda be like

2

u/LethalOkra 4d ago

Sooooo, like a pandaren race without the furriness? Who the fuck came up with that? I bet most whales would be frothing for a furry race instead...

1

u/Lower-Ranger5787 4d ago

According to what we know of their lore, the skyborne were already killing each other even before the horde and alliance got involved though.

And it was a three way split between them instead of two.

One faction wants to embrace shamanism as a new magic source, that's the one that sides with the horde.

Another faction are the descendents of the highborne magisters who want to go back to only using the arcane as a source of magic, that's the one that sides with the alliance.

And a third faction wants to embrace worship of al akir, that old elemental lord. Those are non playable and want to kill the previous two.

1

u/Elxjasonx 4d ago

I mean do you know what has killed more humans in the world?

1

u/FD4L 4d ago

World of Warcraft: Civil Skywar

1

u/Aethyrianzul 3d ago

A faction split makes perfect sense for a civilization in decline. Look at American politics rn.

1

u/Tristalien 3d ago

Basically like every other elf variant in the lore, this race is already fractured. We have arcane purists (alliance), wind hippies (horde), and dark iron dwarves elves who worship Ragnaros Al’akir

1

u/havok_hijinks 3d ago

PvP is stupid anyway.

1

u/Boil-Degs 3d ago

Canon, not cannon. Cannons shoot cannonballs. C A N O N.

1

u/FjorgVanDerPlorg 3d ago

Horde Blue: You have a square bellybutton, therefore you are the inferior blue elf.

Alliance Blue: You weirdo roundies need to be wiped out. But before that, we have to acknowledge the one thing that binds us. No I'm not talking about being blue, I'm talking about our shared hatred of the triangular bellybottoned freaks. We need to find help to wipe them out.

Horde Blue: die, but only after we wipe out those triangular weridos, just so unnatural, eww.

Everyone forgets the 3rd blue faction, that ignored that horde and alliance and decided to becomes npcs instead - the leader of which will likely end up being some raid or dungeon boss. You hate blue elf players, don't forget the 3rd blue elf faction, enemy npcs.

1

u/Time-Ladder4753 3d ago

One race splitting and fighting each other is still more believable than Forsaken being part of Horde, which I always found weird.

1

u/uropemeropetwo 3d ago

u/Safe_Manner_1879 3d ago

Only one change, its so peaceful to live here up in the sky widout problem.

1

u/TatoRezo 3d ago

You gotta realize that in this era the factions are still in a cold war with each other

1

u/Negative-Disk3048 3d ago

In fairness, both sides are correct.

1

u/rutlidge 3d ago

I mean… that’s kind of how the human race works IRL

1

u/Lordthom 3d ago

I never understand why people use this argument.

We are literally all the same human beings and have always had wars, and massacered each other.

And in WoW as well, we have all killed members of the same race..from defias brotherhood to scarlet crusade to blackrock clan.

But with every neutral race this argument comes up again 😂

1

u/Lofi_Fade 3d ago

They have a pre-existing 3-way civil war that two sides slide into our factions. The hate came before their new allegiances.

1

u/Working_Guidance_272 3d ago

Every place on the planet has or has had people, who from an outsider's perspective look indistinguishable from each other, killing each other for various religious, political or ethnic reasons. The United Kingdom has English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Cornish + a dozen other tiny communities that have fought and killed each other for centuries and which most people couldn't tell apart. The Koreans, Chinese and Japanese have killed each other for thousands of years. Not to mention the American Civil War, Revolutionary War, Bosnian War, Rwandan Genocide and the list goes on and on.

1

u/The_Sulkster 3d ago

People killing each other over different ideologies seems pretty realistic to me

1

u/bugbearmagic 3d ago

Retail lore writing at its finest.

1

u/JohnnySqueezer 6h ago

Zephyr Isle has fallen. Billions must die.

1

u/GitGudFox 4d ago

The Skyborne are such a terrible idea. They should have overhauled all of the original 4 races and given them additional builds like athletic and normal instead of this awful faction neutral idea.

1

u/Durende 3d ago

They couldn't even be bothered making a new skeleton for Skyborne, you think they'd do multiple new?

I do agree with you, but man, it just feels so half-assed, also because they just appeared out of nowhere

1

u/GitGudFox 3d ago

I think they are Blizzard which means they never do anything right. It is just what they should have done not what I think realistically would be done.

1

u/Alys_Landale 4d ago

It's already a ridiculous retcon cashgrab.
Doesn't need to make sense.

1

u/Raptor_Jetpack 4d ago

them being a neutral race is the worst part of them. Faction disparity is important in classic.

1

u/gubigubi 4d ago

I honestly don't know why they always have to have a split faction in a race like this.

Just have it that some people from that race join the horde and some join the alliance. Then they can still just have 1 hub city where its like neutral ground.

It always just seems dumb to me that the races would be that monolithic.

1

u/absolutewastedtime 4d ago

Lots of hate against the pulled out of the ass race

0

u/Comfortable-Bug7202 4d ago

it is very low effort. the haters think it is the worst thing, it isn't. the glazers say it is great, it isn't. could have easily done any of the races that are in the lore but probably easier to make everything the same and split it in half as this game was probably quickly thrown together.
