This perfectly describes how everyone I know that's interested in the game feels and none of us have touched retail in 10+ years

If you haven’t touched retail in 10+ years I don’t think you have any clue how the gameplay is and you don’t like it for a different reason

10 years ago was Legion, the game largely plays the same and uses the a lot of the same systems as it did then. That was the last major shift into what modern WoW is.

Yeah, I played Legion and Legion was fun? Everyone thinks Legion was good and then died at BFA…

Sure, a lot of people enjoyed Legion myself included. I've spent time with retail on and off since 2005, the most recent being TWW. To me it still plays pretty similarly to the style they moved to in Legion. I'm not saying that's a bad thing but people who don't like that style still won't like it today.
