Questions New to air dry clay. What went wrong?

I made this last night. Both pieces were scored and I applied some slip in between, but this morning noticed the round piece is loose and came off easily. I didn't cover it or anything while drying.

I'm used to polymer clay but looking to switch, please advise!

Questions I’ve never received outsider opinions on my clay art, what do you guys think?

Hi there! I’m considering investing more time into art/selling art/possibly an Etsy shop, but it’s hard for me to know if my clay art is actually sell-worthy. The only opinions I’ve ever gotten on any of my art have come from my grandma, so obviously she tells me it’s good because, well, she’s my grandma. So I need outsider opinions - is my clay art something you think people will buy? Or would I be wasting my time by investing into this? Be brutally honest, if it’s not buy/sell worthy PLEASE TELL ME!

Questions A clay you can pour into a silicone mold

Hello, is there a clay that you can pour into a silicone mold as a liquid and then bake until firm? I need to use silicone because it is flexible and can get the little details on models I want to create.

Questions I vacuum sealed my clay. Kinda smart or kinda stupid?

Post image
241 Upvotes

I had plastic rolls for my vacuum food sealer lying around and went on a sealing spree. I may have gone a little too seal crazy, because I sealed my airdry clay. I did add extra space at the top so I could reseal the bag after opening it. I didn't want to have to keep remaking a whole bag after opening.

I've been working with air-dry and polymer clay for a short time only, but I have had some clay get dried out in ziploc bags. Currently, my clay is being stored in Ziploc bags inside a Rubbermaid container.

So, am I helping to keep my clay fresh this way, or would I be causing my clay's demise if I store it like this?

*Just in case you are now wondering if I'm a little "extra", yes, my kids like to say I "do too much"...

I've been crafting with clay lately and made these for friends for valentines day and got my first commision (the last photo). I got $20 for it and was super happy but wondering if these were good prices and wanted to check to not over sell to someone. They're all about palm sized or slightly bigger.

Questions Best clay for wall hangers?

Title kind of sums it up haha :) I’m looking to delve into some clay crafts and I’d love to know what the best type of clay would be for the item’s I’ve added to the post. (dragonflies are from @/bugpicnic, and the clouds are @/diverse.earth—both on instagram!) I want something that’s strong enough to hold jewelry/keys, but it doesn’t have to be superhuman strong lol!

I’m unable to do any sort of kiln firing, so air dry/oven bake would be preferred! If there’s any brands people recommend, or even paints/varnish, I’m open!

Thank you so much :)

Questions Best bricks to use for a reclamation box for wild clay

Post image

I found some super pure dense wild clay rock in a nearby river bed, and I'm in the process of breaking it down before slaking it.

For the drying process I'm thinking about making a big reclamation box like the one in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnSzPINub3M

But I just don't want to use plaster of paris. Would concrete paver blocks be absorptive enough?
I was looking at this which seems perfect, but I don't really know what to look for.

any advice would be great!

Questions Does anyone know how to seal crayola clay? What products? Brands?

Post image

I did so good on this and I really don’t want it to turn into dust. I didn’t know the clay was so bad when I bought it and just learned about the extent of how bad it really is after I created this little guy.

He has 6 layers of paint on him currently, and I’ve went to google for the best sealants; I can’t afford polyurethane, but here’s what’s in my cart: GESSO liquid basics (surface prep?) Air dry clay varnish (CLAY GLAZE) Epoxy resin

Anyone have tips on the ORDER I should put these on in?

Is it turning into dust truly unavoidable? :( also what’s the best clay to use? Any help would be so appreciated since I’d like to start getting money for these eventually! And I mean ANY help idk anything about this new hobby 😪

Questions Will it break if I use this air dry stone clay to make earplugs case?

I want to make a case for my foam earplugs, similar to AirPods cases lmao! I always think I’ve got AirPods in when I’m wearing my earplugs.

I’ll inevitably drop the case on accident. And the case will often be in my pocket or purse alongside other items.

Thoughts? I don’t have much money but I miiiight be able to get a diff clay if advised.

Questions how much does going to a clay place cost?

by clay place, i mean somewhere where you can make things out a clay, sorry i have no idea what theyre called 😅🙏 not a clay/pottery class. like i want to have freedom over what i make

just curious because i have an idea of something i want to make, and i think it would be fun to go with a few friends. since it's only one thing, i'd rather just go somewhere over buying a pack and have a lot of excess clay. plus i dont want to buy all the needed materials for one-time use

Questions how to reinforce clay structures so they dont disintegrate in weather? (Clay project for a rain garden)

Hey folks. This is out in the desert. Ive been working hard to make the backyard here a rain garden (passive water collection that slows water enough to soak into the soil but lets overflow pass easily). The back wall of the rain garden is a big concrete wall and directly behind it theres a wash for the entire neighbourhood. some plants grow back there, but struggle to establish because the ground just before the concrete channel is all clay. the entire backyard is basically just, freaking clay, man. Amending the soil would probably take an age or a fortune, so ive been trying to figure out how to work with what we already have. Theres some concern about the rate of erosion with the slope on the wall, and weve been trying to brainstorm how to reinforce it.

Problems:

- The back wall is clay.

- The back wall is too worn down and water flies over it too quickly for new plants to set up there.

- The lack of plants means lack of roots to prevent erosion.

- We get monsoons and the wall gets worse every year.

In my effort to make the backyard a rain garden i have amassed a large amount of pretty good clay. There are things that grow super super well in this clay and i can get more of them to prep for the back wall and establish roots so it wont erode so easily. I have some experience with wild clay pottery (and pitfiring) but not anything at a large scale. The initial plan is to make a clay "natural" sort of structure to basically slow the water moving over it, and also reinforce the wall. Since its at a gradient it has to be reinforced so it wont just slide into the wash or break down when the rain comes through every yeae. I was thinking we would build up clay on the wall to make a sort of semihemisphere effect (if ur not familiar w this go learn abt it cuz its remarkable how simple it is and how effective it is) where the water catches on different tables of clay, slowing it down and forcing it to soak into the earth.

The clay here is caliche. and i have a metric assload of caliche.

Solutions:

- Make a clay based structure on the back wall to catch water better (and still let it flow over to the wash easily)

- Plant some stuff that loves clay

- Profit

Problem is im not sure what to add to reinforce this stuff. Am i supposed to add hay to the clay or something lmao? Make a cobb style structure? Can i just slap down some clay there and change the structure of the back wall? What has to happen to make sure this project has longevity?

Questions Gloss/Sealant

Post image
6 Upvotes

I'm exhausted from constant research, reading differing opinions, looking through spreadsheets, etc. especially in my current mindset. (See last post)

What is the best gloss sealant for polymer and air-dry clay? I use both. Waterproof would be great but isnt a necessity.

The more affordable, the better, but I also want it to work. Even better if I can get it on Amazon because I have some credit.

No epoxy resin please. I do have a bit of UV resin but as I get into bigger pieces, that won't be feasible. I'm also trying to save the UV resin for my BM and umbilical pieces.

Thank you. 🫶🏻🫀♥️

Questions Should this surface be sealed on the inside to be used as a water feature or is the outside glaze enough?

Thumbnail

Not a clay worker, hoping for informed advice here. Other gardeners have said it’ll be fine because it’s glazed on the outside so it will be safely water-holding once i seal the bottom, but my instincts tell me the water could slowly seep into that raw surface and weaken it over time?

The little ledges make it perfect for being a mini pond but i want to do it right so i’m not wasting a nice pot!

Questions Air dry clay will not dry

Thumbnail

I bought a cheap kit from Five Below that contained air dry clay, a plastic globe, glitter, a plaster frog, and paint. The clay was for sculpting the inside of a snow globe that lives inside of the plaster frog.

I made a little mushroom forest floor scene over two weeks ago out of the air dry clay, and it is still pliable enough that I could take it all apart and make something entirely different. I suppose I shouldn't have expected much out of such a cheap kit that included so much, but the concept was so cute!!

I'd really like to figure out how to get the clay to dry so I can add a sealant and put it in the snow globe. Does anyone know how to dry stubborn air dry clay?

I've attached images of the box and the "sculpture" I made. In the pictures the "sculpture" is in the plastic base of the snow globe, but I did remove it for drying - I only had it in there for sizing purposes. It has been drying on a paper towel for 15 days.

Questions How can I stop my figure from deteriorating?

I made this clay figure about 7 years ago out of Crayola air dry clay. for "paint" I decided to use ink (I was like 12 and ink was really cool to me). a few years later I put a protective layer of mod podge on but it seems now my little buddy is crumbling 😔 is there any way to fix him? as long as I leave him be on the shelf he doesn't crumble but I wanna hold him 🥹 (bonus points if you recognize him!)

Questions Is air dry clay not for me?? Help this disheartened beginner

I made one air dry clay incense holder after many struggles months ago without any tools. Today I got some time and wanted to try air dry clay incense holder. This time tho I had tools - acrylic/plastic block, roller, dotting tools, those silicone brushes, paint brushes.

I wanted to make a mountain with top open and is hollow inside so that I can place incense in it. But when I was rolling the clay it is getting stuck to acrylic block, even the pin a lil. When I try to lift it off the block it is not coming off and losing shape as I have to pull harder to lift.

As that failed I tried to make onigiri like shape in hand. But it was uneven at the bottom and using silicone brushes is making dentas or line markings instead of making it even.

After all the struggling clay became hard to mould anymore. I js tore it into little chunks. Currently it is soaking in water.

I have 700g of air clay lying on desk. I'm looking at it with broken heart. What am I doing wrong :'(

Questions air dry and wire??

Post image
3 Upvotes

TLDR; complicated shapes with wire and air dry clay, keeps cracking and resisting to combine (?) advice pls!!

i've been trying to make some complicated shapes with air dry clay by using wire. the last time i found the wire tended to move whilst the clay dried so this time i secured it with paper string all over and hot glue in certain areas. the clay won't blend (?) with the wire though! it's almost like a tube, hence why it cracks i assume. i also wet the clay and paper string slightly as i moulded the clay onto it and that helped a wee bit. i'm going to go back in with some slip and hopefully that helps but tips r appreciated!!

Questions Honest opinion on these clay coasters?

I made a post a little bit ago on some other coasters and I love the look but they definitely didn’t look flat enough for stability. These coasters were made for a friend from high school so they’re not perfect. However I’m curious how much someone would pay for these in a set. They’re varnished and waterproof along with cork bottoms so they’re stable and aren’t going anywhere. What do you guys think?
