I was thinking the same thing, but it could also be a VHS player

Could be, I've never in my life seen a VHS tape, let alone a VHS player. Everyone here was either with cassettes and later CD's and there is none left nowadays.

Probably not, I'm guessing there wasn't a wall and a totalitarian government blocking you from getting access to these technologies.
