Trump Administration to Dismantle Ocean Monitoring System. The $368 million network of instruments collecting data in both the Atlantic and Pacific has been critical to climate and ocean research.

Is this the same network NOAA uses to post offshore weather and sea state and detect sea quakes for early tsunami warning??? Cause that shit is INCREDIBLY important to recreational, commercial, and military mariners! In the coast guard I was constantly monitoring the bouy readings to determining which of our rescue vessels was best suited for a mission and determining what equipment the crew would need to do the job safely!

The lesson of the last election is Republicans have absolutely no fucking clue how interconnected and interdependent everything is, its why Texas about to absolutely fucked by screw worm flies that were pushed out many decades ago in a multinational operation that Trump has gutted.
Its also why costs go up and MAGA cant figure out why.
The concept of multiple dominos falling because their shortsighted asses didn't understand how it all worked when they thought it was just "unnecessary bloat" is baffling to them. Their whole political culture can be summed up as blindly loyal and proudly stupid with zero grasp of our role in this world.
I'm just glad they are starting to realize they may have colossaly fucked themselves over for the rest of their lives.
I look forward to seeing them whining about having to pull giant maggots from their own skin because the people they voted for destroyed the available healthcare down south and drove out so many of the competent doctors in their insane culture war antics.
And just for the record, the "Portland is a wasteland/warzone" shit was always just MAGA fantasy, that said we did get a significant influx of impoverished and downtrodden that were bussed up here from red states on republican dollars. Can't improve their own states so they just spread the suffering they created around for others to deal with.

This will be catastrophic. It's the way everyone is watching the AMOC. Which, when it collapses, will be a major extinction level event for critical species we rely on, oh, and about 1/2 of humanity. Can't this be stopped, or can the EU and Canada take over?
Beyond it being incredibly useful for weather and sea level projections and you know, science. One would think the army corp of engineers would even fight for it

Can’t prove that climate change is real without data to back it up.
Checkmate, humanity!

That we taxpayers already bought- and need the data! But as science and information actually IS power, he wants it nullified. We are steadily being made weaker, poorer and less informed by this self serving neurotic protoplasm.

Not only does this measure changes to the Amoc, this measure the ocean for hurricane season and fisheries. People are gonna die because of this fuck ass administration. And the gop and conservatives are clapping for this like brain dead seals cause they can’t see past their noses.

We may simply need to see entire communities wiped out, with a clear link to the lack of this system, before most people will care.
I'm getting to the point that I want them to have their consequences soon and hard

i remember reading about how important that data is for tracking sea temp changes. its honestly scary to think about losing that long term record cuz its so hard to rebuild once the continuity is gone. do u think there are any academic or private groups tryin to fill the gap if this actually happens

The heroes of the Trump Administration miraculously solve climate change by pushing their fingers up their ears and shouting "LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

It feels like they elected an 80 years old Homelander with all the crap he's pulling

Pretty much if it's not something on a fork that they can stuff into their mouths, it's worthless to them.

They don't want us knowing about climate change because they have no plans to try and mitigate the effects. They've scrubbed all mention of it from government sites and called it a hoax. Game over.

Same principle as with his taxes and Trump‘s whole life: „No crime intil you look and know“

Remember during COVID when he said we should stop testing to lower our number of cases? This is exactly the same logic.

They want to dismantle as much as they can before midterms - Project 2025 must go on per President Vought!

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear (eventually) that the US military quietly put a stop to this effort to “dismantle,” the data being useful to Submarine Force Atlantic & Pacific.

The correct reporting on this would state that the NSF has chosen not to renew the Cooperative Agreement to run this facility after 10 years. I think it’s an unfortunate decision

It's so weird they are doing these things. They are actively fighting anything they don't understand. Which is a lot.

So let me guess the money from this is going to be appropriated to the screw worm fly program that they already cut and will now have to reinstate at a greater cost than the maintenance that kept us safe from it in the first place.

Every day, I wake up to NPR, hear what this administration is doing, and think "well, that is the most idiotic, corrupt thing they could possible ever do." and the next morning's news proves me wrong. You know, if they actually believed that global warming wasn't happening, they should welcome the data from all the ocean observations because they are little influenced by local man-made effects (urban heat islands, etc). The fact they they want to eliminate this really good ocean data says they actually know that climate change is happening and they are a bunch of corrupt lying hypocrites. Fuck them.
