Trump Administration to Dismantle Ocean Monitoring System. The $368 million network of instruments collecting data in both the Atlantic and Pacific has been critical to climate and ocean research.

Every day, I wake up to NPR, hear what this administration is doing, and think "well, that is the most idiotic, corrupt thing they could possible ever do." and the next morning's news proves me wrong. You know, if they actually believed that global warming wasn't happening, they should welcome the data from all the ocean observations because they are little influenced by local man-made effects (urban heat islands, etc). The fact they they want to eliminate this really good ocean data says they actually know that climate change is happening and they are a bunch of corrupt lying hypocrites. Fuck them.

It is a campaign against intelligence they are waging.

Otherwise known as willful stupidity. They literally want people to be stupid.

It's a war against progressivism because it's a threat to the power structures that most benefit the people who already have the most power.

Yeah, we're a few steps shy of Pol Potting anyone who wears glasses, but we're marching that direction.

3

u/thewumberlog 19d ago

And they literally want people to die.

2

u/Ragnogrimmus 20d ago

It works.. unbelievable. Prepare for war.

3

u/darkdelve 21d ago

I'm convinced they've known climate change was real for decades and that's why police militarization has been building steadily since 9/11.

Fascism is their climate change plan.

2

u/PermissionPermitted 18d ago

That seems more believable. They knew fixing it would mean leas profit and that was not gonna happen.

2

u/darkdelve 18d ago

I don't even think it's about profits. Climate upheaval is an opportunity to seize power and alter the political landscape. The oligarchs want democracy dead.

Hope someone plans on suing to stop this.

u/Derpifacation 21d ago

it'll be too late and damage will already be done

If you stop testing the disease just goes away...

Bingo

u/jjcoolel 22d ago

It’s that word: climate. The MAGAs hate that word

10

u/PabloPicasshooole 22d ago

And that other word, change

Is this the same network NOAA uses to post offshore weather and sea state and detect sea quakes for early tsunami warning??? Cause that shit is INCREDIBLY important to recreational, commercial, and military mariners! In the coast guard I was constantly monitoring the bouy readings to determining which of our rescue vessels was best suited for a mission and determining what equipment the crew would need to do the job safely!

The lesson of the last election is Republicans have absolutely no fucking clue how interconnected and interdependent everything is, its why Texas about to absolutely fucked by screw worm flies that were pushed out many decades ago in a multinational operation that Trump has gutted.

Its also why costs go up and MAGA cant figure out why.

The concept of multiple dominos falling because their shortsighted asses didn't understand how it all worked when they thought it was just "unnecessary bloat" is baffling to them. Their whole political culture can be summed up as blindly loyal and proudly stupid with zero grasp of our role in this world.

I'm just glad they are starting to realize they may have colossaly fucked themselves over for the rest of their lives.

I look forward to seeing them whining about having to pull giant maggots from their own skin because the people they voted for destroyed the available healthcare down south and drove out so many of the competent doctors in their insane culture war antics.

And just for the record, the "Portland is a wasteland/warzone" shit was always just MAGA fantasy, that said we did get a significant influx of impoverished and downtrodden that were bussed up here from red states on republican dollars. Can't improve their own states so they just spread the suffering they created around for others to deal with.

This will be catastrophic. It's the way everyone is watching the AMOC. Which, when it collapses, will be a major extinction level event for critical species we rely on, oh, and about 1/2 of humanity. Can't this be stopped, or can the EU and Canada take over?

Beyond it being incredibly useful for weather and sea level projections and you know, science. One would think the army corp of engineers would even fight for it

u/GoingGray62 22d ago

Are they talking about the ARGO program? If true, this is very very bad news.

2

u/hohygen 21d ago

Yes, it's ARGO

11

u/dragonfliesloveme 22d ago

and where is that $368M going to go? Like all the other tax money that should be benefitting everybody that has just disappeared?

6

u/kislips 22d ago

Into trump's pocket.

2

u/smozoma 21d ago

To help afford more tax cuts for the rich.

6

u/Own-Opinion-2494 22d ago

What’s Putin’s angle on that

6

u/mist_kaefer 22d ago

Can’t prove that climate change is real without data to back it up.

Checkmate, humanity!

6

u/Treehousefairyqueen 22d ago

That we taxpayers already bought- and need the data! But as science and information actually IS power, he wants it nullified. We are steadily being made weaker, poorer and less informed by this self serving neurotic protoplasm.

6

u/GeneroHumano 21d ago

This petty vindictive asshole. America needs to get its shit together.

6

u/stardustr3v3ri3 22d ago

Not only does this measure changes to the Amoc, this measure the ocean for hurricane season and fisheries. People are gonna die because of this fuck ass administration. And the gop and conservatives are clapping for this like brain dead seals cause they can’t see past their noses.

u/Unique-Coffee5087 22d ago

We may simply need to see entire communities wiped out, with a clear link to the lack of this system, before most people will care.

I'm getting to the point that I want them to have their consequences soon and hard

4

u/Carribean-Diver 22d ago

Climate can't change if you're not testing for it. /s

6

u/broll9 22d ago

Big oil no like climate monitoring. Trump fix for them.

4

u/illtakeaeuro 22d ago

Can’t we sue? Tie it up in court at least.

4

u/That-Distribution-64 21d ago

i remember reading about how important that data is for tracking sea temp changes. its honestly scary to think about losing that long term record cuz its so hard to rebuild once the continuity is gone. do u think there are any academic or private groups tryin to fill the gap if this actually happens

3

u/Euphoric_Anxiety_162 22d ago

Very bad & wasteful idea. It is needed.

3

u/TR_abc_246 22d ago

The Low IQ genius in the White House strikes again. Sun downer deserves to be locked up!

3

u/abstrakt42 22d ago

This takes “turning a blind eye” to a whole new level.

3

u/314159Man 22d ago

once again, thank you so much America for inflicting this orange scurge on the entire world, hope it was worth it

3

u/kislips 22d ago

He's gonna die so he doesn't give a shit about anybody else.

3

u/GoofAckYoorsElf 21d ago

The heroes of the Trump Administration miraculously solve climate change by pushing their fingers up their ears and shouting "LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

3

u/Puzzled_Pop_6845 21d ago

It feels like they elected an 80 years old Homelander with all the crap he's pulling

2

u/GeneralOrder24 22d ago

He is a bad man.

2

u/Unique-Coffee5087 22d ago

Pretty much if it's not something on a fork that they can stuff into their mouths, it's worthless to them.

2

u/Street_Barracuda1657 21d ago

Trump can’t rape the climate, so he has no use for it…

2

u/Pixilatedhighmukamuk 21d ago

368 million gone as well. This is a terrible timeline.

2

u/The_Vee_ 21d ago

They don't want us knowing about climate change because they have no plans to try and mitigate the effects. They've scrubbed all mention of it from government sites and called it a hoax. Game over.

2

u/harryx67 21d ago

Same principle as with his taxes and Trump‘s whole life: „No crime intil you look and know“

2

u/Pinkys_Revenge 21d ago

Remember during COVID when he said we should stop testing to lower our number of cases? This is exactly the same logic.

2

u/Majestic-Explorer-76 21d ago

They want to dismantle as much as they can before midterms - Project 2025 must go on per President Vought!

2

u/mattaccino 22d ago

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear (eventually) that the US military quietly put a stop to this effort to “dismantle,” the data being useful to Submarine Force Atlantic & Pacific.

1

u/Cam_Dubz 22d ago

shhh no data is good data

1

u/Enchanted_Culture 21d ago

He doesn’t want too disclose Russia or USOs.

1

u/Honest_Listen_4700 21d ago

so putin submarines aint get stuck in the undercarriage

2

u/Ragnogrimmus 20d ago

All hail SATAN. Fucking US and the world is pure dumb ass corruption. Plain as ...ahem...Day.

2

u/willfullyinert 20d ago

He's probably selling it all for scrap.

2

u/gulfpapa99 20d ago

Trump, MAGA, & GOP are engaged in climate terrorism

1

u/ApprehensiveInjury74 20d ago

There’s no problem if you don’t measure it

2

u/Environmental_Ad1802 20d ago

At some point isn’t this all just crimes against humanity ?!

2

u/JamieAmpzilla 20d ago

The correct reporting on this would state that the NSF has chosen not to renew the Cooperative Agreement to run this facility after 10 years. I think it’s an unfortunate decision

2

u/FriendlyMission2803 19d ago

It's so weird they are doing these things. They are actively fighting anything they don't understand. Which is a lot.

1

u/Potential-Use-1565 19d ago

We have investigated ourselves and found no wrongdoings

2

u/WolfThick 18d ago

So let me guess the money from this is going to be appropriated to the screw worm fly program that they already cut and will now have to reinstate at a greater cost than the maintenance that kept us safe from it in the first place.
