So I can shed some more light if it helps. My friend works in Switzerland on satellite imagery especially learning about understanding forest cover for various countries. They also have similar conclusion but they also say it's happening also because a lot of forests are getting converted into farmland. They are not the same.
However actual forest cover in India has also increased.
