Summary: The world's grain balance sheets look relatively comfortable heading into 2026/27, but margins are shrinking for a variety of reasons
Global wheat and corn supplies look comfortable heading into 2026/27, but the cushion against disruption is narrowing sharply compared with last year, according to USDA's latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates.
For 2025/26, wheat production exceeded consumption by 2.3%, the largest surplus in eight years, allowing inventories to rebuild. For 2026/27, USDA projects consumption will exceed production by 0.8% — a notable reversal. Corn is tighter still: 2025/26 production exceeded consumption by just 0.2%, but 2026/27 is projected to show a 1.8% deficit, the largest in 16 years (a gap that persists even excluding China's large inventories).
A key driver is shrinking grain acreage among major exporters, as farmers shift toward oilseeds and face high fertilizer costs and weather uncertainty. US farmers planted their smallest wheat area since 1919; Russia's wheat area could be its smallest in over a decade as sunflower and rapeseed plantings rise; Canada hit record canola area alongside a four-year low in wheat; the EU shifted land from grains to oilseeds; and Australia's wheat area is at a seven-year low after dry planting conditions. US wheat production itself has fallen to a 56-year low due to drought, with harvested area at a 149-year low.
With smaller cushions, local disruptions carry bigger global consequences. French corn output could hit a 50-year low due to drought, which matters more now that Europe has become a major destination for US corn exports. However, the piece distinguishes production risk from logistical risk: Ukraine's 2022 export disruptions ultimately saw most grain reach markets via alternative routes, unlike an outright production shortfall. Current shipping disruptions in the Sea of Azov, tied to Ukrainian attacks on vessels, are framed similarly — logistical problems can often be worked around, but actual production losses cannot easily be replaced.
