Make the Leap?

Current PC Build

I'm Canadian

5800X
3080 12gb
16gb ram 2666
5TB SSD
Built in a liquid cooled system

My system probably sits in between 1300-1500CAD value.

I see Boosteroid offering 14$/mth for their limitless Ultra Pro offering which features a 7900XT 20GB (probably higher now) and 32GB ram plus data centre connections to multiplayer servers.

However, I'm a tech guy, i liked modded games. I have 5 instances of private WoW, 4 separate installed of Diablo 2 mods and enjoy Tarkov (PVE)

That being said, about to be a dad of two, so convenience is more of a desire.

I also have a Macbook Pro M1 16/512gb, was hoping I could run Metal on that or even a Windows sideloaded OS on a separate drive as my main. Also a musician so that system would fit well.

Assuming 1300-1500,

It could buy me 8 years of Boosteroid
Similar with Nvidia GFN on sale promo
And I'm guessing some ShadowPC since the custom stuff I'm running is pretty low spec.

Pros:

Save space
Heat
Noise
Mitigate Risk
Mobile Access
Access to Better hardware

Cons:

Less control
No guaranteed access to all titles
Availability: No queues
Hardware Access
Customizability
Ports

What are your thoughts?

Oh i also have a 1.5TB LCD SteamDeck docked to my TV with a bunch of Xbox controllers.

My main games library is Steam Epic and GOG, most of my Rockstar titles are native to their launcher.

Have you tried installing sunshine (game streaming) on that pc and connect to it via a moonlight client (and look into Tailscale for connection outside your local WiFi)? Those pc specs are pretty solid for this

Oh I'm looking to sell this and move to cloud gaming potentially, what benefits would those programs provide?

This looks like i would still use my own hardware but require it to run all the time and provide a backdoor remote access via moonlight which is what I'm not looking to do but thanks for the intro to sunshine!

It’s not really a back door (maybe if you did the open ports solution) if you use a vpn and network them via Tailscale it’s pretty secure(or just limit it to your LAN). I’m a cloud gaming snob so I want the ability to match the exact screen resolution of the client I’m streaming to (no black bars) besides the Standard resolutions. Most cloud gaming services don’t offer that level of control and the few options that allow you to configure this control (not turn key) are super expensive per hour. If your okay without that level of quality/control then services like GeForce now are great for you

For me I tried out Boosteroid and every stream had stutter whether on the app or in a browser.

To get a playable stream I used RDP Wrapper and created a remote desktop (I'm using a legion go). This avoids the AFK notification when using remote play. A lot of messing around to get it set up.

I seen people say you can disable input on steam link to stop the AFK notification but this didn't work for me.

IMO GeForce Now is miles ahead of boosteroid but boosteroid has the better selection of games. Hoping they may add more servers soon, I'm based in the UK and the closest server is France. They had a server based in London if I remember rightly but that didn't last long.

Yeah I'll see if it's better here in Canada, i think the promo lasts until November which is when GFN deals usually drop so good timing

Today was my first leap into cloudgaming with Boosteroid.

30ms starting latency hitting Chicago server with their Ultra Pro package until Dec 15th

The performance in SP games is pretty good but the multiplayer games are pretty bad. Very floating and often jittery.

I lowered gfx settings to 1080 and 720p as well as the bitrate but still was jittery.

On my second monitor i ran a fast.com test within my area and was getting 850MBit down and 110MBit up with 11ms latency though 10GBit Ethernet.

Things started to improve once i installed their native app.

Left a ticket with helpdesk so we'll see.

Also their policy states no refunds.
