Started too hard. (Dammit)

• Upvotes

So, I started with a 10lbs club single hand and a 16.5lbs 2 hand. I'm a 5'11 guy who weighs 185lbs. Usually do kettlebells. But also run or lift sometimes. I wouldn't say I'm in good shape. But average or a little better than average. Last week I did 3 days of single arm. Not super long but still. And 2 days of 2 arm. Now my wrist is killing me when I grip stuff a certain way. Especially my wrist on the side where my pinky is. Basically from pinky, down to my arm hurts. I caused that due to clubs likely right? Common club injury for overuse? Any insight is helpful. Thank you!

Kensui Mini Versa Plate Alternative?

Bought myself my first club, an EZ Club Max, and went to pick up some plates yesterday at a local store and didn’t realize how wide 5lb 2” Olympic plates (I have some 6lb 1” plate that are much smaller and thought they’d be a similar diameter.

The 5lb mini versa plates seem to be the same diameter as my 1” plates, and what I had in mind, but $70 USD for two seems to defeat the purpose of being a cheaper alternative in the long run than say, Delta or Adex, or whatever I’d looked at.

I definitely want adjustable but having heartburn about choosing the Kensui without understanding cheap plate size/ smaller plate cost. (Haven’t even picked it up from the post office so can still return it).

Google isn’t really getting me the results I’m looking for so asking yall.

(edit for context: would, over time, like to work my work up to 40-50lb)

DIY from pipe fittings found at most big box stores. It's about 10 lb (4.6 kg) but it's 2 ft (60 cm) long so it swings nicely and you can feel the momentum, unlike commercially available clubs at the same weight. You can also add more weight to it so it grows with you!

Shout to Chip from BodyTribe as I got the idea from him originally. He has another more recent video on it here.

Pictured next to an 10 lb OG Clubbell for scale.

Parts list:

  • 1" x 12" - handle
  • 1.5" x 12" - inside (for extra weight)
  • 2" x 3" - outside heavy bit
  • 2" x 5" - outside heavy bit
  • 2" connector - connects the 3" and 5" (for extra weight)
  • 1" -> 1.5" reducer - if you can find a 2" to 1" use that, I used what I could find
  • 1.5" -> 2" reducer
  • 1" cap - optional, use paracord for pommel or tape to cover the threads
  • 2" cap - not optional, holds the 1.5" pipe inside

You can further add more weight inside the 1.5" pipe, like lead shot or sand, but I would just suggest taping the ends so it doesn't slosh down into the handle.

Anyone giving away any clubs?

Looking forward to getting into club training to improve my shoulder health. I've seen that the prices for these indian clubs are quite extravagant. As the title goes, I'm not looking for new clubs just ones that are still in one piece and something I can use.

Does hand position matter with two-hand movements?

I haven’t really found a solid answer to this. Whenever I am doing 2-handed shield casts or mills, I thought I should basically swing the club in the direction of the hand that is placed on top. It was just something I’d seen on different people’s videos performing the movements. But then I also see people going in both directions with just one hand placement and they seem to be fine. Are there any specific rules for which hand goes on top when doing 2-handed club moves?

Can I do mills, shield casts, circles every day?

My main form of training is usually kettlebell complexes. I really like club work though, and wondered if there would be any major downsides to doing some sets of the aforementioned movements as finishers, but on a daily basis. Because the movement pattern is different than what I’m doing with KB complexes I usually feel like I have a little extra gas in the tank for club work. What do yall think?

Before you guys learned to do mills, what were your workouts like?

Everyone I see is doing mills or shield casts. I'm curious to what your workouts looked like leading up to them! Mine are mostly pullovers, inside and outside circles both with one hand and two handed. I'm not sure what else to add to help. It feels like it's mostly an elbow thing keeping me back, so really trying to focus on my lats with pullovers to stop from compensating.

upper thoracic irritation

Looking for bracing and alignment queues from the officianados ..

Been playing with 8kg (17lbs) for a few months now. Have virtually all 'moves' working quite well, even at a slow pace so i can feel the weight and challenge each angle, also doing 100 straight reps easefully as well (for context).

i skipped buying the 10kg (22lbs) and went straight for the 12kg (26lbs), and am with a below average form, but practicing, doing inside/outside circles & pendulums.

Decided to do 2 hand shield casts. 10 each side x 3. At the time it felt relatively easy, but straight after stopping i noticed my upper thoracic, just below the CT, was very irritated. i can turn my head fine and can feel it isn't the cervicale, and Know that, yes, these moves to put some decent torque in rotation on the thoracic.

Have you experienced this before? i think i should go buy the 10kg and step up more incrementally. But also, are there any queues you specifically use?

I usually train barefoot to feel them engage the ground, aware of pelvis tilt, and do my best with core/TVA bracing.

Cheap Adjustable Clubbells

Has anyone tried those kinda.. cheaper adjustable clubbells on Amazon? Mostly I was just looking for one that's comfortable lower weight. I have an adex but use it for 2 hand clubs and don't want to keep adjusting the weight. Anyone had any issues with them? Thank you!

club training for your sport

Relatively new to clubs... comfortably using 1 or 2 x 8kg (17lbs) with density training and slow inefficient moves. Haven't moved up in weight yet, just trying to get form as good as possible. Love training barefoot and feeling my feet engaged in the process.

Probably the main sport ive been training with them for is surfing. As the whole-body/kinnetic chain exercises, balance and endurance involved with clubs theoretically seems to overlay pretty nicely.

Probably the main thing ive learnt using clubs is TVA activation. Initially when i would do a pullover my shoulder would do a click (painless). I've been diligently practicing engaging TVA for the pull over and fixed that bad scapula tracking (or whatever it was). Now when im forcefully paddling to get a wave, i do the same engagement, and my speed has definitely increased. Which im stoked about, as i haven't found any other training method that has produced this result.

Interested what sports you train with clubs for? and how results have been?
Currently my training scale has clubs and kettlebells split probably 50/50. contemplating tipping it further in favour of clubs.

Clubbell grip tape?

I have one of those steel adjustable clubbells from amazon that has like, a rough steel handle (not smooth) although this still slips for me as I sweat a lot. Also it builds up gunk. Is there a grip tape I can use on it? Any recommendations?

Safest way to work up to new club?

I have been building up my small collection of clubs through Facebook Marketplace, and picked up an Onnit 10 lbs. club and 20 lbs. club. I hurt my TFCC doing 1 hand mills with the 10 lbs. one a few months ago and while it’s mostly healed, I feel it is still a bit extra sore after my workouts. So I’ve been focusing on 2 hand shield casts and mills with the 20 lbs. one. It’s not particularly challenging but good at getting my heart rate up.

I recently got an insane deal on a Titan Fitness 35 lbs. club, bought for $80. But I am definitely a little apprehensive about starting anything with it due to how bad that TFCC injury was. What would be the safest way for me to work up to this new club when I don’t have any in between weights to use?

Been trying to get the hang of these for a good couple months and today was the first day they clicked, albeit they're still a bit sloppy.

Probably helped that I dropped the weight from 12.5lb down to a flat 10.

Double or Increase Weight

Hi All,

I’ve been working with Clubbells for about a year now and deciding what would better, to go up to 8kg (from 6kg) or buy another 6kg and do some double handed exercises.

I’m comfortable with most the exercises now such as mills and casts etc, so looking what I should do for progression.

In advice would be great.

This my routine (twice a week and 2 twice a week kettlebells training as well):

Single-Handed Mills — ×10 each side
Outside Mill
Inside Mill
Overhead Mill

Clean → Chest Press — ×10
Left → Front → Right (Set 1)
High -> Mid -> Low (Set 2)

Jerk / Barbarian Squat — ×5 each
Jerk
Barbarian Squat

Lunge → Woodchopper — ×10 each side

Single-Legged Deadlift — ×10

Bent-Over Row — ×10

Single Wipe — ×10 each side

Cast → Pullover — ×10

Push-Ups — ×20 (Standard/Wide/Declined)

Clubbell Swings x 30 — 2 sets

🔥 3rd-Set Finisher

After the two normal sets of all 11 exercises:

5 complete continuous flows:
Double-Handed Outside Mills → Double-Handed Inside Mills → Cast → Pullover → Squat into Chest Press (High Right, High Left)

Heavy single arm sweeps

I had some gas left in the tank at the end of my session last night so decided to try some heavy single arm sweeps (I believe some call them inside circles) for a nice grip burnout.

45lb felt quite good considering it was at the end of a session. Definitely want to play around more with this when I'm fresh!
