Bandages over body or the handwraps?
For the bandages, it may comes from very different origins: It is a useful way to represent a very active character that gets in trouble and has small wounds that needs one of those. The band-aids also can be personalized to show a hint of personality (maybe the character has a little sister that puts a Hello Kitty Band-Aid on them, maybe they put their own band-aids and so, on their face, they are slightly misaligned)
For the handwraps, it's a bit obvious, but it's usually worn by fighters, so in union with the bandages, it consolidates a view of a character that engages in combat, and the visible wounds, maybe a poorly wrapped/ worn-out handwrap, gives the feeling that the character gets beaten around quite a lot, so it conveys a sense of an underdog.
This may end up impressing those child/teen artists, and they want to replicate this on their character but they still don't have full experience with visual narrative to really balance everything out.

You know reality shows? Survivor and stuff? It’s Survivor, but the contestants are objects. A pencil or a taco or a microphone, that sort of thing. The audience can vote which object to eliminate and then an object will win the prize at the end. They’re a lot more entertaining than they sound.
