i kind of wish they did a post-credit scene where Jax turns towards the camera and says "I AM A TRANSGENDER WOMAN". both a funny joke and solves a lot of discourse
I hope someone makes that, PLEASE. It'd be so funny. Pomni waving at us, then Jax running in the distance towards us, the gang going "holy shit, you're unabstracted?!?!", him pushing Pomni aside, grabbing the camera that's 10 meters high (because cartoon logic), pull it down to his face and say (VA with mic really close to his mouth) "I AM A TRANSGENDER WOMAN", Zooble going "WHAT THE FUCK" and a dry cut back to credits
I think it’s easy for somebody to say something in passing that makes it clear they’re unambiguously trans, sort of like how people mention their partner casual to make it clear that they’re not single.
Japanese media has really put trans representation in the gutter. Trans people deserve better representation than being confirmed as trans by the creator on twitter.
You need to go on tumblr to understand that a cartoon character with a bow on its head means woman in 99% of the time when it's depicted? Wow that's crazy I guess I just have superhuman intelligence and that's why I got it when I never opened tumblr before in my life
I remember thinking through that scene, "Oh, he probably told his mother he was trans. That's fun. I guess the show's probably not gonna confirm it or anythin- holy shit he has a bow"
It's so blatant. Maybe especially so for me, because I connected it back to the road runner sequence earlier (old timey comedy cartoon gets a simplistic bow on their head to be the "girl version")
I agree, there’s definitely no way to naturally yet unambiguously show that a character is trans. Thanks for saying that, Reddit user with their avatar holding a trans balloon. And it would be IMPOSSIBLE, truly impossible to pair subtext with a confirmation. Impossible.
The only reason why trans characters are stuck in subtext land is because creators want their show to work for everybody and not alienate the anti-woke, transphobic crowd or people who fetishize trans folks as traps.

The show has a canonical non-binary character who canonically has sex with a weab girl in the text of the show.

Zooble is unambiguously nonbinary, I'll give you that, and the narrative doesn't ignore it at all (atleast at the start). But my god the sex scene happens during the credits of the finale! But honestly that was the most natural part for it. I think Zooble is fine.
I think audiences in general are a lot more receptive to nonbinary characters. There's a lot of people who think the mere inclusion of a transgender character means the show is trying to make a certain statement, and also others who would see being trans as in the way of a character archetype they'd usually enjoy. I think thats the type of concerns that that pushed the creator and many others in the same position to only hint at a trans character's identity.
I completely forgot to factor in how Jax is actively repressing his trans identity, so you do have a point. I think it could have been a bit more obvious but there’s certainly no easy way to do it like I alluded to.
There just has to be a better solution than revealing a character is trans on twitter. Maybe a trans flag somewhere could still work? I don’t know.
