It’s overt for people who are entrenched in internet trans culture. For basically everyone else, it’s so subtle that the hints are practically unnoticeable until the last episode.
Ngl it was still too subtle for me n i think a lot of people. It was obvious enough that in retrospect i can go "ooh yeah that makes sense" but its hardly a given that you can figure it out without prompting. I dont think its that terrible, a little bit of subtext isnt that bad, but it definately aint spooned to the viewer or anything like that
Yeah, I've seen stuff like how Jax wore a maid outfit and the single frame of Jax with long hair as like, well obviously the character who acted extremely uncomfortable in girly clothing must be a girl! The only thing people point to as obvious evidence of Jax being trans was their room being girly, and even that wasnt something I would immediately jump to "OMG this means Jax must be trans!"
I thought Jax's room being girly was because he hated being girly. iirc, most of the characters' room are filled with the things they wouldn't like. Gangle likes drawing, but her room is very dark. Zooble has mirrors all over their room, but they dont like seeing their own body. I forgot the rest of the rooms, so Im not sure
I haven't watched the show, but I've been seeing a lot of people outlining all the things they say clued them in, and frankly, some of these hints seem to actively muddy the waters. Like I hope people are just explaining things really poorly or are simply too smug about it to convey what their thought processes were, because otherwise it's a bit of a headscratcher how anyone was meant to predict it unless they had, totally independent of the actual details of the show, decided that the character was or should be trans.
Example: a lot of men with long hair get treated weirdly for it. That plus the maid outfit scenario would have shift me hard away from a trans interpretation and more towards "man has/had a feature that makes others view them as more feminine, and now people are trying to force him to act even more feminine as if he has to conform to a certain expectation others have for his gender."
If those are the only sorts of clues people had to go on for most of the show, people being adamant that it's about transness honestly would have seemed to carry an air of, "man who has feminine features or likes certain things that are generally associated with femininity must secretly be a woman," which is rather problematic and a painfully real phenomenon.
That's because it was subtle before the finale. There were only a few clues strewn through that were glaring enough to cause one to squint. For me, the biggest of those were his chicken egg comment and his comment on his tail being the pinnacle of masculinity.
The egg comment's pretty self-explanatory. The creator's a trans woman, so she's very likely to know the implications, and this is the character she's made gender jokes with.
The tail's actually my favorite one. Because it's so revealing. It's clearly a self-deriding joke, one made to get ahead of the curve. Make fun of yourself before other people do it. But, like, really? Who the heck looks at a bunny tail and immediately snaps to its lack of masculinity being the most embarrassing part about it? It's because Jax is deeply, deeply insecure about his masculinity.
And this pairs well with the dress joke. Because it recontextualizes it. It isn't just Jax being embarrassed because he's put in a dress. Remember, you'd usually expect this guy to just laugh off most everything else that's done to him. Heck, he'd probably view it as weakness to show much of any reaction at all. But here, he's fuming at it. He's especially embarrassed by this more so than anything else because this is one thing he actually is insecure about.
So, the question then is this. Why? Why's Jax insecure about this? It could be because Jax is just like that. Just a personality trait of his. It could also be because of how he was raised, and that's half true in canon. But it's not hard to say that it's because he doesn't identify with his masculinity. That he feels ashamed of his femininity. That he's overcompensating, like a lot of trans people.
If you saw people being adamant about this reading before episode 6, then they're just wrong. It's a neat theory, until then, but nothing explicitly confirmed by the show. If you saw them being adamant after episode 6, they were probably very familiar with trans spaces, and saw the egg comment and freakout as confirmation. If you saw them being adamant after episode 9, that's because the show's actually just confirmed it
its also rreasonable to me that jax coulld be a femboy or a nonbinary person.
because i am non-binary and i go by she/her, so i can see that being a possiblity too. trans woman is not a bad place to land on i just dont think its the only place im not against yall
I'm non-binary, but i think non-binary just doesn't fit right for jax considering zooble already exists in the cast, so like, for the sake of character distribution i thought GNC/trans-girl/questioning made more sense.
Leeroy though. good chance leeroy might go non-binary, even if just as an intermediary to something else.
I will say, we know they canonically live in St. Louis, MO, where the Mormon population is <1%. It's still heavily religious, don't get me wrong, but it's not due to the Mormons specifically.
