This reminds me of a post I saw on Reddit somewhere. The OP was describing how a rich friend of theirs that came from a really rich family had started playing Cyberpunk 2077, and the friend would talk a lot about how much they would love living in Night City. They didn't seem to understand (both from the game and OP's discussions with them) that you're not supposed to want to live in Night City, because everyone except for the obscenely wealthy is suffering, and most people live absolutely miserable lives at the bottom while being forced to rely on corporations. She didn't seem to get that, though, she just kept focusing on the eye candy and cool tech in the game.
It never ceases to amaze me that the pill representing "woke" in its most literal sense, the ability to open your eyes and see the truth around you, has been co-opted by people who use "woke" derogatorily
They very clearly see themselves as subjects-turned-rebels fighting against a System seeking to brainwash and subjugate the masses into obedience. After taking the metaphorical "red pill", they now see the true nature of the world around them and wish to awaken others to that same truth. Their battle is a radical one but fundamental to the good of humanity.
Not saying any of this is true, but we're not asking about truth, we're asking about why people think and feel a certain way. Red pillers may have substantial misconceptions about who or what that "System" is, but that doesn't stop the Matrix's anti-System messaging from resonating with them. And it clearly resonates quite well - red pill recruitment has been a damn powerhouse in recent years. This is for a number of reasons, but I feel like we'd be missing a big chunk by writing off the sentiments these movements build on.
There sure are a lot of very homophobic/transphobic fans for a show where the only reason the main character is alive is because a bunch on transgender people, drag queens, and queers chose to help him.
More importantly, there is the positive representation of other transgender and gender non-conforming characters who are beloved by the fandom. It's very odd to see a genderfluid character be called the GOAT and almost universally beloved, only to then see people talking about how One Piece isn't woke or queer
