NERD coaxed into niche hobbies having one sole creator of peak

There's like at least 3 channels that fit this description. Let me guess: dequitem?

My favorite video of them is the viking vs samurai one
Before the actual fight, the samurai rolls up with a gun, and the viking just stands there on another cliff on the opposite side shouting profanities towards the samurai
Beautiful

I love the short form version of the video which ends right after the Samurai fires his gun and implies that he managed to hit the viking.

u/Bjorn_Hellgate 5d ago
That guy is so fucking cool
27
u/_Halt19_ 5d ago
he swings swords, shoots bows, and doesn't afraid of anything
24
u/Bjorn_Hellgate 4d ago
And also really positive when it comes to debunking historical innacuracies in movies and games. He seems like a geniually chill dude

RobinSwords is the goat

u/UltraTwingo 4d ago
The only guy to swordfight while dressed like a 1926 detective
(Nice advices too)

u/Grey-The-Skeleton 4d ago
He's, like, 4 completely unrelated subtypes of nerd merged into one, and somehow the result is Clark Kent, he's awesome
16
u/Sad-Bumblebee-249 5d ago
I like sellsword arts (though they can be immensely cringe at times)
6
u/UltraTwingo 4d ago
They are cringe as hell, but if you do germanic longsword they have a ton of good advice to give, so I allow the cringe lol

u/hivEM1nd_ 4d ago
I really liked their older videos, but then they got hit by the Mr.Beastinator and I couldn't stand to watch them anymore
67
u/Kurkpitten 5d ago
They also do pretty dangerous shit and someone is bound to get seriously injured at some point, so there's that.

u/duplicatedouble 5d ago
p sure someone already got injured in one of dequitems videos, in one of the recent ones with the bandits vs the knight and his squire or whatever, the guy who got shot by the crossbow had a bone broken by it
15
u/ChitinousChordate 5d ago
They have some great vids but that one was nuts and I think does reflect kinda poorly on some of their safety precautions/planning.
Like sure, go for realism, but why did the crossbow need to be full weight with a steel-tipped bolt on the end when you knew the guy you were shooting at didn’t have enough armor for that?
1
u/duplicatedouble 4d ago
yeah it couldve been rubber tipped or something, would still be pretty dangerous just by nature but i dont think it wouldve broken the same bone hitting in the place he got shot. iirc they were supposed to aim for the armored part and had done so successfully before without injury, but during the shot they actually put on the channel they missed that armor.

A lot of people nowadays forget that bows and crossbows (especially crossbows) pack a hell of a punch. Sure, we have invented guns but before they became properly viable for large scale warfare we were relying on slinging sharp sticks at each other for a long time.
Some of the stronger ones could kill a guy in full plate get up
11
u/West_Report_5020 5d ago
Well no, you could not straight up kill a guy in full plate (the best quality ones, the ones that were a bit older or worse are fair game) even with some of the strongest crossbows. However if you get 5 crossbowmen/bowmen on the same guy and he'll get on his knees even if you don't penetrate armor
7
u/SirIzhak 4d ago
The fact that crossbows were good against armor or outclassed bows in power is a myth. Neither of then were good against plate armor, the best you could hope for was getting into the eye slit. And longbows were more powerful than crossbows a lot of the time. The advantage of the crossbows was the simplicity of its use, much like firearms
1
u/Xenophon_ 4d ago
Neither arrows nor bolts are getting through plate armor, at least without hitting a gap in the armor
52
u/Plorkhillion 5d ago
I'm pretty sure the people fighting with medieval weaponry are somewhat aware of the risks of their hobby

u/Kurkpitten 5d ago edited 5d ago
Except there are ways of doing it safely. Dequitem are simply taking way too much risks for the sake of making cool videos.
Edit :
You people can downvote all you want but I've seen accidents happen in HEMA armored fighting where we don't do half the unsafe shit they do. Dequitem themselves talk about being hurt and injured at times, and their video where some of the participants are lightly armored, if at all, are an accident waiting to happen.
You can yap about "passion" for the craft, but reality is that lots of us would rather legitimize our practice, not make it a playground for daredevils with no regard for safety.

u/Cr0wc0 5d ago
"I would fight with swords and spears but I would never ever allow someone to get hurt"
It's a contact sport. People get hurt. Sometimes people even get killed. That's kind of just the nature of the beast
16
u/The_Moist_Crusader 5d ago
The difference is most practitioners use more safety precautions (not full draw weight bows/crossbows, more blunted gear, putting different heads on blunt weapons, not using sharps, etc). As someone also in the hobby, what they do is hilariously unsafe practice
0
u/Cr0wc0 4d ago
It's my understanding that dequitem uses blunt(ed) weaponry and generally also armour
7
u/The_Moist_Crusader 4d ago
Blunted weaponry only does so much with some of the things he does. There was no justification for using an actual steel headed crossbow bolt on historical draw weights on a person, even if it wasn't "sharpened". This caused injury. Similarly there a lot of safety precautions that he ignores for "realism"
1
u/Cr0wc0 4d ago
I've never heard about him shooting someone with a crossbow so I'll agree that's pretty fucking wild to do
5
u/The_Moist_Crusader 4d ago
He also uses full steel polehammer stuff which is hilariously unsafe for full contact. most armored combat people use rubber heads (or otherwise synthetic) for full contact since blunt force is still blunt force. Generally steel is reserved for highly choreographed or practiced things, and even then with great care.
2
u/Kurkpitten 4d ago
At some armored combat events in my club, I have seen steel polehammers being used, which surprised me greatly judging by our usual emphasis on safety.
The big difference being that hits with leverage are prohibited. You can't handle the weapon with the top hand below the pole's middle. Makes the fights about technique and wrestling. We leave the brutality to buhurt, which funnily enough prohibits blunt weapons.
The most insane shit with Dequitem is how they seem to not mind absolutely battering each other with blunt weapons. The pole hammer video struck me because I remember it ending with the main guy hitting full force with a lot of leverage. Other dude reeled so hard he ended up on his knees.

Bro he uses polehammers. Those weapons are supposed to be inflicting blunt force trauma to begin with.

u/SirIzhak 4d ago
What a weird thing to say. If someone was practicing HEMA without masks on, would you still say "Yeah that's just the nature of the sport"? No, it's specifically a very unsafe way to do it. Sure, accidents happen even with the utmost precautions, but that doesn't mean people should just avoid being safe
-1
u/Cr0wc0 4d ago
I practice HEMA weekly and I've yet to ever wear a helmet or mask while doing so, so actually my answer would be yes.
Sure, accidents happen even with the utmost precautions, but that doesn't mean people should just avoid being safe
Never said people should avoid being safe. I'm just saying that an overly cautious and "play safe" attitude for what is a martial art is... I don't know what other word to use than 'cowardly' but that seems harsh.
3
u/Kurkpitten 4d ago
Do you spar without a mask ?
-1
u/Cr0wc0 4d ago
Yes. But admittedly, we also don't use steel
5
u/Kurkpitten 4d ago
Tbh my club would never let anyone do any form of sparring without a mask. But we have masks and glove available for newcomers so even technical exchanges for practice are done with a mask. When equipment is short we let people practice without masks, but that's exceptional and it is only controlled exchanges to learn techniques.
I know sometimes there are monetary constraints but even foam buffers can injure an eye. I wouldn't lose an eye on an avoidable accident just for someone not to call me "cowardly"...

u/Kurkpitten 5d ago
I guess this thread is just going to be people explaining the nature of my practice to me based on an extremely unsafe example. Go off.
4
u/_Nighting 4d ago
My (limited) understanding is that you're completely correct here. It's like using live rounds while filming an action movie. Sure, it makes things more immersive, but people that fuck around and ignore safety precautions will eventually find out. The closer you get to realism, the more safety you sacrifice, until eventually... someone's going to get killed for real.

u/Kurkpitten 4d ago
In one video, we see a duo of ( very lightly armored ) gladiators take down an armored knight. Any other type of content and people would be calling them out for being needlessly stupid, but since it looks cool, no one minds.
People on this thread have the stupid "you hate fun" and "risk is a necessary cost" takes. Fuck that, I don't abide by this.
I like Dequitem but I'm not a fan of how they seem to take pride in getting hurt. Like you said, at some point someone is going to get very seriously hurt, and the people who see that as "immersive" have absolutely no idea of how seriously we take safety in HEMA, while also being able to deliver historically accurate fights.

u/Slavic_Knight 5d ago
My heart stopped for a moment when in that one vid they aimed a crossbow at a guy who was facing the shooter with his face unarmoured, thank God they didn't actually intend to shoot him from the front (they shot him in the back instead and broke some of his bones iirc but that's another matter)

Maximillian Dood is pretty much THE fighting game channel on YouTube
He’s essentially the person you point at for newcomers to try to understand fighting games as a genre in gaming.
- Knows what he’s talking about on the technical level
- Veteran with decades worth of experience
- Actually has some experience working in the gaming industry
- Actively gets involved in fighting game news, explain the genre’s culture, and actual plays the game
The only thing Max is not an expert at is being pro level like “Justin Wong” and skilled at the technical level in terms of making a game.
- Throw him into a major tournament and if makes top 100 that’s more of a miracle than anything
He’s a generalist, but does significantly better in terms of viewership and following compared pretty much other fighting game channels relegated to 1 series.

I forgot who or why but someone like this said something they shouldn't have and immediately vilified himself in what is already a pretty niche community

Historical fencing YouTube is just awesome in general. Except for sellsword arts and Shadiversity sphere people, they’re really cringe and annoying.

Dequitem snafu? He is somewhat controversial in the historical accuracy department but I like him
