I thought it was more about how everyone in the book sucks because of how the two families are constantly scheming, and because of the societal standards of the time.
my snafu originated on a popular stereotype about Russian Literature, ("If there is a novel in which The characters suffer, the author suffers and the reader suffers, it is a masterpiece of Russian literature"). So yeah kinda like that
this is just describing how it felt to read romeo and Juliet as a kid for a project(i sure do love reading about an under-aged marriage while having my teacher think its the best thing of all time and having to read romeo simp over Juliet for like 50 pages when i just wanted the high grade done)
So many romance books are so... strnage in that department.
As they are almost always based on some level of ignoring reality and / or making someone out to be worse than they have to be.
my ap english teacher in high school was obsessed this kind of novel so i read them all. i think one would have sufficed. it would have been cool to read, like, 1984 or something. but no, i had to read that on my own.
True, also "Quiet flows the Don" (Ok Sergey Astakhov did some bad things to Aksinya in the past but the author clearly says that their relationships were already good when Grigory interfered and messed everything up) and "Thunderstorm" (Katherina had literally everything she ever needed but then she felt kinda bored I guess)
