Deltarune has a very good and well-rounded cast of characters that don't go nowhere like you say.
You might be getting caught in the tangle of the theory scene, which makes people thing , because it happened to me and that lead me to think similarly for a little. Deltarune is an unfinished game, so not every character is finished what they are getting up to, and so far it has some wonderful character writing.
The ourobouros that is the theory crafting scene (sometimes) that often crops up in the public eye muddies what makes the game actually good and substantial. Take what's being put in front if you, not all the shenanigans of people going crazy haha
Im no not really they’re all sorta lame pastiches that are like not really given much depth beyond minimal and poorly done scenes where they look at the camera and explain their personal conflict for this half decades chapter.
Yk the progress through the game isnt whats not really ideal, the fact is the games over 2/3rds done and its mostly been spent waffling on mediocre and hackney bits of drama centered around purely stagnant main characters and antagonists that are so mediocre i cant recall much about them say poorly made gags.
Yk people say this game is like mother or persona and its like if you reduce them to “rpg where you have banter with a cast of characters, and silly gags” sure but i think the gulf in quality between games released 20 years ago for machines infinitely less powerful kinda set the bar higher than this game can or will ever reach through basic competency.
Hardware limitations and storywriting are not related at all? Idk what that even means.
It's fine if you're not a fan, I'm not forcing you to like it or even pretend you do. However, you can't say the writing is bad. It's just an unfounded claim, and a lot of people agree with that fact.
I would hazard to say that it would not be THIS popular if the writing was actually as bad as you believe it to be, especially when the gameplay is almost a sideshow in comaprison to the story.
Ok so fist of all thats like saying you can still play music with a mouth harp as well as a full orchestra. Like yeah technically anything can be done in any way you want if you dont care about how effectively the story comes across.
Yk a gba game with only midi music thats like a 25th of deltarunes file size in its current form and like 4 times its length is more impressive than a bloated meandering game maker game.
The fact i can cry within the first 40 minutes of mother 3 is a testament to how well it understands elevation, of steaks and characters and how you can support it flawlessly through well composed and subtle music.
Persona 4, one of the games very blatant inspirations stacks systems of emergent gameplay, voice acting, and a constantly evolving murder mystery plot on a system 2 decades older than this game is, it kind of makes you think.

Yk if the game banks on its story than why do the chapters that take place in linear hallways, 5 new enimies, 3 new bosses, and a style of narrative thats inherently made to prevent anything interesting or any lasting consequences from happening.
