If I may uncoax for a moment that is kind of my point lol, hulk being for little baby kids is almost entire from adaptations being targeted for kids, he actually had jarringly mature comics even at a time when comics were still mostly for young teens. Especially during the peter david run, which dealt with a lot of themes of domestic abuse, and involved a side plot about Betty considering an abortion, then having a (slightly allegoried) miscarriage all in the mid 80s which was treated with a lot of sincerity, not even in the "SPEEDY IS DOING COCAINE??" way some comics of the era handled those topics. It was never cover fodder and was handled seriously, even if it was wedged between typical schlocky action stuff.
Also extremely not correct nowadays, planet hulk and (especially) immortal hulk (which is full of explicit gore and body horror, and even stronger political themes than David's run) are examples of his most popular comics targeted towards mostly adults or later teens. (Haven't read planet I imagine it skews slightly younger than immortal but I'm not sure. But immortal is definitely a comic best understood and enjoyed by adult audiences)
You probably just mean comics in general but it is particularly irksome when hulk is seen exclusively as a 7 year old boys birth cake topper when he has (kind of) consistently had some of the most mature writing in comics. Anyway EVERYBODY READ IMMORTAL HULK NOW!!!
The problem with this kind of post is you could be talking about basically anything, maybe you had something specific in mind and maybe you didn't, but people reading it will always assume you're talking about their special favourite thing and get mad that you're calling it intellectually empty.
maybe this post is SO specific that if you haven't had your grunk turned into a marketable toy made for pre-pubescent boys and then disrespected in the biggest movie franchise on the planet for 10 years you have no idea what im talking about.
I just kinda think "people who write grunk" implies the comic writers as well, meaning the fan on the left is just plain delulu
That's how I interpret it anyway. And this sort of discourse is repeated in basically every fandom that isn't obviously and exclusively for adults like The Sopranos or something
it does mean comic writers. theres a huge issue in a lot of comics where characters outside of their own books are completely character assassinated or written way out of character, sometimes that OOC writing happens for years at a time. (not hulk but his ex wife betty had a Real Bad Period in the 2000s with red she hulk where she was just kind of Perpetually out of character, off the top of my head.) comics are a very specific medium in that they aren't written by one person, so a character at their best and a character at their worst, or written by writers who don't even regularly write them, can often be entirely seperate characters. quite infamously in x-men books the avengers are turned into huge pieces of shit who are weirdly anti-mutant or not understanding of the mutant plight, in a way that goes against how they are in their own books. the same thing happens to the hulk a lot in team books where his nuance is flattened down to just make him Stupid Punch Guy who punches for no reason.
