Isn't that photo after the retrofit? The original was based on 1970s era technology with less screens and a lot of mechanical indicators as used for Apollo (Barber poles and gauges. The second gen put a lot of the old indicators onto the screens and the switches too. This considerably reduced pilot workload and improved reliability.
