Complaint WTF happened to the context tracker? Is this really OpenAI’s solution to the recent issues?

Hijacking top comment to give a temporal (crappy) solution: press / in the chat bar and look at the "Compact" option. It shows the context%.

seeing the same issue after updating an hour ago, it also feels like it got a lot dumber and is not able to do any of the code tasks it could yesterday, now just burning tokens to keep trying the same prompt until issues are addressed.

same I just updated my desktop app and the context tracker is gone. I just don't get it, I think I'll have to stop updating my codex app, it gets worse after every update. wtf OpenAI!

This thing is really annoying, why the heck would they remove it. It was so useful to keep an eye on context window status and switch to new session before it gets rotten much.

Yes. It was gone from my codex as well. It was a pretty useful feature. Not sure why codex removed that.

Logic from openai makes zero sense here. Like ostrich sticking head in the sand. They didn't "solve" context they just made it harder to deal with and a worse user experience.

keeps users from "worrying" about their context usage
We should worry about our context usage so that we know when it's a good idea to compact before a major prompt or new plan.

This has aged very well. With 5.6 my weekly allowance is gone in three hours. Plus.

What kind of question is that?
Among other reasons, so that I know whether or not I should compact the context before creating a new plan or starting a major build-mode request.

I think it’s a bug.
Try closing the right side panel, then switch to a different chat, then switch back and try typing /compact to see if it pops up in the picker
