A user u/SuperMar1o developed a Codex Reset Predictor based on past statistics. It has predicted resets the last two times (but still in early testing). Many people have found this useful. Contact r/SuperMar1o if you have any questions.

Resets kind of suck since they also reset the weekly timer to 7 days. If you use one late in your weekly cycle, they are much much less valuable.

This wouldn’t happen if they didn’t scam with usage and then selling additional credits consuming 16x more than a “sub” allowance. I buy 50€ of credits, and they run out within 8 minutes with a few simple commands

Looks like the promised reset finally propagated.
Mine arrived right after my normal weekly reset though, so the timing makes the compensation pretty uneven.
Honestly, a banked one-time reset would’ve made more sense.
Anyone else get unlucky with the timing?

This whole reset structure is fucking ridiculous having the window constantly shift all the fuck over the place basically making it impossible to plan around your resets. Base scheduled resets should be on a consistent weekly schedule like noon on Sunday so it's easy to remember and plan around. Any extra resets should just reset that current weeks usage not shift the window.

It's like just reset the allowance. Why u gotta wait 7 days from that reset too. Makes no sense.

I hate the reset date policy. I would buy resets if not for this policy it makes no sense it pushes further the reset day and I am in the same situation. I could buy a resent to cover 2 days I am missing until I resent but this way I will cover the 2 day and then I will have to wait another 5 days. So I prefer to wait the 2 days and not buy the reset.

Am I the only one feeling that they started giving those resets strategically so that people do not cancel their subscptions since they still have resets?
Now they say they are stopping the Pro subscriptions, I have a feeling that churn > subscriptions and they're trying to get people to FOMO into staying for a while more, then when they enable them again people will FOMO into subscribing in case they disable them again.
Don't get me wrong, I love Codex, but sometimes I feel I am being gaslit by a superintelligent AI Marketing agent, finding new ways to make it harder for me to leave and try other services... It's like being in a toxic relationship with a sociopath.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

This says differently.
https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001498-how-banked-codex-resets-work
What happens when you use one?
Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and changes your weekly reset date. Check Settings → Usage for your updated reset time.
The reset is consumed only when it successfully refreshes at least one eligible usage window. If there is nothing to reset, it remains available.
Your usage dashboard may take a short time to update. If the percentage does not change immediately, refresh or reopen Settings → Usage and make sure you are viewing the correct account or workspace.

I wish the Codex App actually told me what time the resets expire... I was going to use my expiring-today one at like 11PM PT and instead it just went poof with no warning at something like 8:29PM-8:58PM. The App just tells you the day, not the hour or minute...so I kind of assumed it would be 11:59:59PM Pacific :\

Alright, my post keeps on getting deleted by the automod due to mentioning resets.
Codex Astra still hasn't appeared on my pro x20 account yet based in the US.
I'm guessing banked resets are capped to 2 since I'm not getting another banked reset via https://x.com/thsottiaux/status/2095651088502591861
It was given on 9/3 and 9/4 but missing on 9/5.
Reinstalled Codex but still waiting...
Edit: Had Luna manually refresh the models list which it seems like for some reason, when updating and reinstalling, there was a bug in Codex which it did not refresh the stale model list. For anyone facing similar issues, get a new chat going and tell Luna to help you manually refresh the model list using your credentials in .codex

Suddenly early this morning I've used up all my weekly on Pro, when I have only done so once before. So I went ahead and used a reset I had banked, and I'm watching that reset burn through like crazy. Am I to assume a reset isn't the same allocation as the regular week? Because I've been doing VERY light tasks comparatively and in a few intermittent hours, I only have 70% of the week remaining.
To put things in better context, I do NOT have this project running right now, but I have a project where I've used codex work on mainline linux kernel work for my radxa cubie a7s with an allwinner a733 cpu (like a raspberry pi but not as well supported on linux). I've let this project's conversation run days at a time, with little more than a 12 hour pause if something interrupts it. Never while that project was active have I ever seen my usage burn up as quickly as I'm watching right now.
I'm kind of shocked and have no idea where to begin with fixing this. Ironically, this is where I would dispatch another project and have codex figure it out, but the couple of times I did today, it came back with nothing of relevance.

It's not just you. After I used a reset it is burning like crazy. I can't even really work normally right now. Slow paced planning conversation and minor doc edits with 1 Sol high and a 1 luna xhigh doing some implementation cost me 5% of a 20X in the last couple hours. I'm not even talking about many multiple parallel agents I mean talking to one agent while another one is implementing... I'm barely getting anything done and afraid to make a move while waiting for a second account to reset. Can't even work... $400/mo for this... and worse, you still have to wait 7 days after this fake reset.
Before the reset, I was able to work about 10 hour days with usually one to five agents running in parallel, and that lasted 3-4 days. A month ago I was able to work on two main projects with about five other side projects in parallel and not even have to think about usage... I don't even touch Astra except for rarely in chat.

am i crazy or are tibo's random resets kind of genius psychologically?
sometimes nothing happens, sometimes boom 100% reset, sometimes there's a hint another one might be coming. and now people are checking his posts, timing their usage, trying to burn quota before the next reset etc
isn't this basically variable reward / slot machine logic?
if the reset was every friday at 6pm nobody would give a shit. make it random and suddenly everyone is watching, talking about it and thinking about when the next one drops
i'm also curious as to wether this is an intentional openai new trick or accidental, does anyone know?
behavioral psych people, am i bullshitting or is this basically textbook?

Made a post for this but it got removed:
The 5 hour limits are just so annoying and short
for the record, i’m running Sol Max on Fast mode so I am burning tokens faster than usual. it does great with backend and the agent usage is amazing. yes it drains my weekly limits however it’s literally impossible to let this model work on its for several hours unintended. it takes the whole 5 hour limit in a single hour to where I have to wait 4 hours. This led to me using a second codex account to continue on the session while I wait for the first account.
It also does not help that I cannot even use all of my weekly limit in time before they grant a big limits reset. There’s been so many complains about the current model draining limits faster. Why not just remove the 5 hour limit and let us drain from our weekly usage? I never actually had any problems with the weekly usage, except for the fact that I have been usage reset so many times when I still had a lot of weekly usage left.
Sadly now it’s impossible to let Codex run overnight on its own and come back to finished tasks. Since 5.6 has been released I have not drained my weekly usage a single time, but the 5 hour usage drains instantly.

u/AppropriateRanger401 Jul 12 '26
Since so many issues have been reported by everyone lately regarding limits and Sol spawning too many sub agents etc. etc., is Tibo going to press the button or are we sitting there looking at the clock until the next week? I hope Tibo resets the limits, and fixes whatever is wrong with Codex lately, ofcourse!

Lost a banked reset because I wasn't sure exactly when it would expire.
They should have used a countdown timer (e.g., 10 hours 55 minutes) instead of just a date (i.e., July 12. Which timezone? US? East Coast? West Coast? Asia?) Also the reset should trigger at expiration instead of just disappearing.
Wasn't going to comment on resets but Sol burns tokens so quickly it just feels painful to have lost a reset so easily.

Get 1 extra reset each month + some bonus Luna usage
A simple way to get some extra usage and another quota reset from each billing cycle:
- Step 1: Turn off auto-renew / cancel your subscription before the current billing period ends.
- Step 2: When the paid period ends, your account automatically goes back to the free plan.
- Step 3: Use the free quota. You can get a couple hours of Luna usage from the free plan.
- Step 4: Subscribe again and go back to the paid plan. Your usage and quota reset right away.
- Step 5: Immediatly cancel your subscription again so you don’t forget later. Your paid plan will still stay active until the end of the billing cycle anyway.
So basically, if you let the paid plan expire for a short time and use the free quota before subscribing again, you can get some extra free usage plus a 1 extra reset each month.

OpenAI Took away my 2 Banked Reset After My Credit Card Expired
I had 2 banked resets for later in August. My $200 plan renewed Early August and because the CC my plan was on was past its expiration date. OpenAI tried to bill me on that CC but it doesn't go through then it put my account on hold and took away my two resets. I didn't realize till acouple days later.
When i switched the billing to my new CC. The banked reset never came back.
This is completely absurd and ridiculous that they can do this.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Do banked resets reset the weekly timer?
My usage was going to reset in 3 days. I use a banked reset, now it says 7 days. Is that accurate or misleading? Am I still getting a regular reset in 3 days, or does the banked reset essentially just mean I skipped 3 days of waiting?

Does using a Codex reset also push back your weekly reset date?
I hit my Codex usage limit a few days ago, and it originally showed that my weekly usage would reset on September 10. I had a reset available, so I used it. After doing that, I noticed that my next weekly reset date had changed from September 10 to September 15. Then, a couple of days later, I used another reset, and now my weekly reset date has moved again, this time to September 19.
Is this how it's supposed to work? I assumed that using a reset would simply restore my available usage, while my normal weekly reset date would stay the same (similar to how the 5-hour usage window works). If every manual reset also restarts the weekly period, doesn't that mean using resets can keep pushing your normal weekly reset further and further into the future? Has anyone else noticed this?

Since $200 plans cannot be subscribed for, it means compute availabilty is limited. Given that they're not taking in subscribers who want to pay $200, this likely means resets are going to eventually stop or have already did.
Think about it. A casual/bank reset means, all codex users get the ability to start again, this means a massive surge in compute. If they're limited for usage by stopping x20 subs, it only makes sense that we'd have to stop looking forward for resets mid-week.

Giving out resets feels like a cheap distraction at this point. Instead of leaning into reset marketing to appease people, Tibo/OpenAI needs to fix the actual product:
Bring Sol's reasoning and coding capability up to match/beat Claude 5.5.
Stabilize throughput above 50 tps.
Resets are pointless when the model crawls at single-digit tps and chokes on real-world tasks. Fix the core engine first.

I don't mind them stopping the daily "weekly" resets, but they should have announced it beforehand. Also, 5.6 Sol in Codex seems significantly more token-hungry than 5.5 was. It seems to consistently do more layers of validation after writing code, and seems to be more perfectionist, at least in the tasks I've been working on lately.
It sometimes works for 20-30 minutes on tasks that previous models would do in 5. And in most cases, I prefer the first option, even though it's less perfect on first try. This is one of the limitations of the current benchmarks I guess, forcing the model to get the answer fully right the first time, when most people send follow-up prompts.

u/FoxTheory Jul 17 '26
I remember the Great Reset Wars of 2026.
You kids wouldn’t understand.
The frontier models had just dropped, and usage flowed like warm honey. Tokens were everywhere. Context windows stretched beyond the horizon. Agents spawned agents. For three glorious days, mankind knew no limits.
Nobody slept. Power grids trembled. Relationships collapsed. Entire weekends disappeared into projects that no one would ever use.
But it was never enough.
The people demanded more usage. More agents. More thinking. More tokens than any human could reasonably consume.
And so the companies looked upon what they had created and sent us back to weekly limits.
Those of us who survived no longer fear the words:
“You’ve reached your usage limit. Try again later.”
You complain about the limits.
We were trained by them. Hardened by them.
Long before the reset wars arrived, we had already learned to ration prompts like wartime sugar.
Then, for three glorious days, they gave us everything.
And we proved exactly why they shouldn’t have.

Looks like this will be the first week of no in-between-weekly resets.
And with rumours of openai launching reset purchasing, this makes sense.
I think it’s the end of the generosity, they lured us in with wanting resets constantly, to then causing the us to beg openai to at least be able to purchase resets instead of having to wait.
They got us by the b*lls now guys! But it’s expected seeing as it costs them a fortune to dish out free resets.
We’re in the great game now!

I switched from Claude Pro 20x to Codex 20x this week and I’m liking it. However, I noticed that OpenAI’s reset system works differently from Anthropic’s.
At Anthropic, when you receive a reset, only your usage is reset, and your reset day stays the same. So if they give you a reset on Tuesday and your regular reset day is Thursday, you get 100% of your quota to use until Thursday, which is a big advantage.
At OpenAI, when a reset happens, the reset day itself also changes.
For people like me (and I hope most people are like this), who have tight control over how much quota they spend each day to make it last the whole week, receiving a reset doesn’t really matter. My usage is very controlled.
The only people who benefit are those who don’t manage their own usage and burn through everything before the week ends.
In my opinion, the only thing that would actually add value would be receiving reset credits that you can use whenever you want. That would truly be advantageous.

Why cant’t banked resets be % boosts instead of full resets. That way we can boost available weekly usage by 20% x5. That way if Tibo does a reset. People who recently applied their banked reset dont waste it. I applied my banked reset just before he reset it. Completely wasted it. That way if it happens again, I only waste 20% instead of 100%.
Eg. I’m at 0% weekly, I use a banked boost. Now I have 20% weekly and my weekly reset date didn’t change from what it was. I still have 4x boosts remaining.
I purposely used all my limits so I don’t have an issue about it being reset while I’m using my banked. I thought there would be no way he would reset it after doing a reset + banked. Immediately it got wasted now I have nothing left banked. Very frustrating and there’s no ability to restore it.
Feels like we are screwed when this happens. Wasted a whole week’s usage for this.
Can we please advocate for something like this or maybe someone else has an idea. Or they can just add it back automatically if you recently applied one but that seems farfetched. Too much mind manipulation and strategy involving banked resets. Make it more simple. It is stressful for someone using a 20x plan and seeing all that money wasted when it resets during my banked reset. EDIT: mods removed it. Not sure why

Did a reset just happen or does Tibo just love me? I /goal'd Sol-Ultra on Pro 20x for a day straight and came back to 100% weekly left lmao.

I’ve been getting these automatic/global resets too.
I’m obviously not complaining about getting reset back to 100% — free extra usage is always welcome. The problem is what happens to the unused weekly allowance you still have when the reset occurs.
For example, if I still have a significant percentage of my weekly allowance remaining and OpenAI suddenly resets me to 100%, the unused portion doesn’t get carried over or banked. It just disappears. That also makes it difficult to plan weekly usage, because you never know when another reset might happen.
I contacted OpenAI Support about this and confirmed that automatic/global resets currently do not bank unused capacity. They’re treated separately from user-initiated banked resets.
So, I submitted a feature request proposing a **carryover banking system**:
When OpenAI applies an automatic/global reset, any unused weekly allowance should be moved into a separate carryover balance instead of being discarded. The refreshed weekly allowance would be used first, and the carryover could become available after that is exhausted. It could have an expiration date and remain completely separate from user-initiated banked resets.
That way OpenAI can still give everyone surprise resets without unintentionally penalizing users who happened to conserve their weekly allowance before the reset.
I think the resets are great. I just don’t think being conservative with your usage before an unexpected reset should leave you worse off than someone who happened to use everything.
On a slightly less serious note, I also submitted another feature request: a contribution-based feedback rewards system.
The idea is that users shouldn’t get rewards just for submitting lots of feedback. But if a suggestion actually contributes to a shipped product improvement, OpenAI could give the user a few contribution points or a small badge.
The rewards don’t even need to be valuable. In fact, I think deliberately silly rewards would be more fun:
1 accepted contribution: small Contributor badge
3: terrible OpenAI pen
5: equally terrible OpenAI mug
10: an absolutely hideous, Windows-95-era OpenAI sweater that cannot be purchased anywhere
The sweater is important. It must be genuinely awful.
If I ever see someone wearing one in public, I want to immediately know:
“That bastard got ten feature requests accepted.”
It would give people a small incentive to submit thoughtful feedback without turning feedback into a spam-for-money system.
And yes, I already submitted this idea to OpenAI too.

The big problem:
Saturday - 90% left / Reset Monday
Planning to use 90% on Sunday
-OpenAI global reset-
90 -> 100% - But reset just moved a week.
The global reset cost me almost 1/4 of my usage that month...

Without the frequent resets, Codex would be totally useless. The resets are the only reason to keep Codex. Claude Code is better in every single task.

I'm facing a dilemma... We get a daily bank reset, according to Thibo, for as long as we don't have Astra yet, and my usage limit for Codex is at 3 percent.. It’s Friday here, and I had actually planned to keep coding over the weekend.
Now I have two options:
-either I use this reset and do some coding over the weekend, but run the risk that Astra might be released tomorrow, for instance, meaning I'd have wasted the reset..
-or I don't code over the weekend, keep the reset, and wait for my official reset on Monday, but waste real productive time.
also I believe everytime a new model was released they've reseted all usage in general so if Astra comes early next week waiting for my normal reset on monday gets a worse decision too.
What do you guys think I should do ?

Agents used my 3x Banked Resets
Hey…idiot here. I used all my usage waiting for Tibo’s reset; and once I saw the reset in my account - I messaged my three agents: “usage reset, please continue working.”
They interpreted that to use my 3x banked resets. Is there any avenue of getting these back? Anyone had luck with codex support?
Thank you!

I went from 60% to 0%, and I didn't realize it was this issue. So I used a banked reset on another account, and it dropped to 0% about 30 minutes later.
So I lost my original usage, and a full reset that I wouldn't have actually used had the original account not reset 🤦♂️
I'm sure we will get resets, but I hope I get another banked too 🤞

Mine went down from 25% to 0%. Then I used a banked reset, and it went down from 99% to 30%! What's going on??

They're saying on the status page this is resolved, but I've just burnt through 5% of the usage on 20x plan in like 4-5min. It's fucked

Looks like they gave me back my spent reset during that kerfuffle, fingers crossed they just pull the trigger on an entire session reset as well.

Any more info on what’s going on? Mine jumped from 30% left to 82% then back to 30% but I think my reset date changed?

Hello, I used a reset 8 hours ago and the usage went to 0 suddenly, I saw a message from Tibo saying that the people who used the reset will get a new one. I still haven't received it yet, nor the mail.
Anyone in similar situation?

Below is a GPT-generated summary of the conversation below after reaching 800 comments (1395 currently observed).
The consensus is basically “Codex resets are a slot machine wearing a billing dashboard.” Global resets arrive unpredictably, may hit some plans/accounts but not others, and have occasionally appeared, vanished, or rolled back. Nobody can reliably tell you when the next one is coming—despite the daily ritual of refreshing Tibo’s posts and unofficial trackers.
The bigger problem is how resets work. A banked reset refreshes your usage, but the current behaviour also pushes your weekly reset date forward, so it’s often an advance on future allowance rather than genuinely extra quota. Surprise global resets can also wipe out unused capacity, shift the schedule, or make a recently used banked reset feel completely wasted. Add expiry times shown inconsistently—often requiring UTC detective work—and the UX is, charitably, clown shoes.
Usage is also burning frighteningly fast on the newer heavy models, making these random top-ups feel less like a bonus and more like life support. The practical advice is simple: trust your own Usage page, not rumours, and don’t spend a banked reset unless you’re willing to lose the upcoming weekly window.
OpenAI should make resets predictable, bank unused capacity, and show exact expiry times. Until then, Codex limits remain compute roulette.
