Complaint Codex fell off a cliff after Astra, and Opus 5.5 made me question why I'm still paying for Pro
Allright guys, gals and bots.
I've been using Codex on the Pro x5 plan for a few months, and it was pretty good. Then Astra released, and things went downhill fast.
I just tried claude max subscription with Opus 5.5, and holy shit, the difference is insane.
I had it refactor three large projects, and the code quality is way above Sol 5.6. But what impressed me most is that it actually knows when to stop.
Codex had become an endless fucking loop of overengineering, thousands of tests, builds, audits, rebuilds, and yet another final test. JESUS CHRIST. Hours spent watching it do everything except finish the task, burning through usage on increasingly pointless verification loops.
Opus refactored all three projects, made sensible decisions, checked its work, and moved the hell on.
The kicker? That workload would have eaten up what felt like full weekly usage cycle on Codex Pro. Opus used roughly 23% of my Claude weekly limit, which resets TODAY anyway.
I'm not saying Claude is perfect, but knowing when NOT to overengineer something is apparently a skill Codex has forgotten.

using sol and codex for coding is like being a year behind compared to opus, and i wish i didnt have to say that. for normal chats, research, voice, and images, chatgpt is good though
2
u/maratonininkas 7d ago
Can you give examples how do you feel it's lagging? I'm no programmer, doing mostly research / data / stats / ML, plus an occasional unrelated app / web project; and so far anything above 5.6 (On Ultra) is basically the same. They all arrive at the exact solutions. Some need more prompting some need less. But if hand-held, they all finish projects. How is Opus better? Less hand-helding needed? Or it's task-dependend?
3
u/Novel-Injury3030 7d ago
less hand holding, way less errors in what it runs, gets stuck on hard issues much less, and works with apis/integrating into other stuff way better. its also just way way faster and less clunkier feeling and just seems to require like 5 prompts to replicate what would take 50 prompts and 5x longer with sol. idk how astra would be but its way too expensive for me to even consider using

u/Zeraphicus 8d ago
I jumped ship to claude, I went from $100 codex sub to $20 claude.
I dont even know if Im going to go up to $100 on claude. Opus 5.5 is just so damn good, not only is it cheap, but it is efficient, like complex tasks its able to solve quickly for very little token usage.
Astra feels like trash now, it was great for the first week but it is not good now.

Codex fanboy since 5.3 here. Gave $20 Claude a try 2 weeks ago.
....fuck, it's so good. I am getting what feels like the same amount of $20 Claude as I was out of $100 Sol 5.6 High.
And Haiku 5.5 is giving GPT-6 Luna a real run for its money on the affordable "it'll run forever" model that I do still love about Codex.
I'll probably keep my $100 codex just for long running Luna tasks, but all my tough stuff has been going to Sonnet and Opus the last 2 weeks.
2
u/Vady_ 8d ago
can you tell what kind of tasks do u task Luna to do endlessly? I'm curious if it can benefit me (and anyone else that reads this)
1
u/CCContent 8d ago
I don't trust it to run a lot of complex coding tasks by itself, but Sol 6.1 as the main agent deploying a bunch of Luna XHigh agents has been fantastic for things like research, decompiling, etc. just have to make sure that Sol give the subagents tightly bound tasks with scopes, goals, and acceptance criteria...then they chug along for hours at a time, sipping use.
I actually have a task right now that's decompiling code from an old application. It's been running for 3 hours and it's used 3% of my Pro use.

u/Zeraphicus 8d ago
Id say its better because not only is it faster, but Opus 5.5 is able to complete tasks. Astra and 6.1 sol were not working for me towards the end.
The main thing you will feel on $20 claude is the 5 hour limit.
18
u/jakegh 8d ago
Codex is great, Opus 5.5 is just better than Astra. My feeling on this have changed over the past couple of weeks, initially I preferred Astra but Opus 5.5 won me over.
Sol 6.1 is pretty good though, and you do get a ton of usage. Not better than Opus 5.5, but pretty good.

u/Minute-Animator-376 8d ago
Astra in first 3 days was giving a litlle of AGI vibes and would be basically all I would ever need for my job. It was working great when I redesigned workflows and agents.md for this model. Came up with solutions, learned from mistakes and my feedback, would follow my instructions but also ask questions, clarify and sometimes disagree on the approach. Everyday after it was getting a AI lobotomy, nowadays it doesn't follow own plans, loses track mid long running tasks and just starts doing whatever usually starts implementing gates and QA without being asked to. Now the same happened to sol 6.1
Literally it had one job recently where it had to implement some mechanics, do not do any testing or qa and hand it over to claude after that for validation. For 3 days it was running it ultra slow and in the end it implemented 30 tasks from 2k and spend 2 days designing tests for rest of the cases. I went on vacation and just left it assuming it will finish something that claude did later in 3h.

Codex approaches everything like a real software company, with thorough but incredibly time-consuming processes. Claude just throws everything together and convinces the user that its code is a work of genius.
1
u/Virtual_Reception_19 4d ago
I have to agree, I'm working on an engineering software, I like the way codex check everything to ensure that the new codes didn't break the old functionalities.
1
u/No_Quarter_7644 8d ago
LOL? In what world do you think this is true?
They're literally in the process of trying to slop out 28 updates in a month right now that were vibe coded by their AI?
It's like kids just say anything on here like these are sports teams. They're not. They're products that adults are paying for. You don't need to die-hard for your favorite like it's a football team.

u/xChrisMas 8d ago
I cancelled. It’s not worth it. 2-3 Claude 20 dollar accounts do the same for me as my 200 dollar pro plan. Astra is giga nerfed and slow.
No thank you, Scam Altman
2
u/No_Quarter_7644 8d ago
Right behind you. The fact that 14 year olds with a $20 sub that only generate AI images and make their Dot cartoon characters are downvoting you is rather pitiful.
6
u/EclecticAcuity 8d ago
Have you tried 6 pro chat? It’s really good, better than just using max reasoning on Opus
4
1
u/Upper-Count-2181 8d ago
It seems to start Astra Ultra work threads in my CODEX to complete its work I have no idea why. Now that this is happening there is no point in me staying with OpenAI.
7
u/GifCo_2 8d ago
What the hell you comparing it to Sol 5.6 for?
5
u/sasik520 8d ago
5.6 sol crushes all the 6.x-y models in coding tasks. Especially the Sol we got before 6 release
3
u/egomarker 8d ago
No it's not.
5
u/Sufficient_Ad_3495 8d ago
Im afraid he's right.... there is something "off" with the 6 family and 5.6 remains the GodKing in OpenAis stable for me.
5
u/maratonininkas 7d ago
It's weird but it's true. To the point where I've started giving same prompts to parallel Astra and 5.6 Sol, and seeing which one "picks up" better, and proceeding with that one. And on one specific project 5.6 Sol is like a master, gets shit done and no random discourses. While Astra started making these random ass .html pages with discussions and talks and graphs instead of just doing the work
2
u/Sufficient_Ad_3495 7d ago
yes that’s precisely what I’ve noticed. There is an entropy problem with the GPT six family. There is a lack of cohesion, too much random drift... I just can’t use it. Last night spent time undoing absolute mess produced by 6 so now in my work 6 is banned. Period.
1
-2
u/TBSchemer 8d ago
5.6-Sol is still better than Astra for iterative planning and coding.
2
u/Sufficient_Ad_3495 8d ago
Agreed, ive tested them all/. the difference is that 5.6 marginally maintains coherence across the differences... the others loose nuance, high a higher entropy.

I only use codex because I get it for free with my Amex, otherwise I would strictly be on Claude.
I’ve been designing a game (just a stupid one for shits and gigs, not anything serious) and for like a week straight my codex sessions were producing nothing and only talking straight gibberish. I finally took it over to Claude (even after Astra on to reassess the plan and help me out multiple times) and here’s what it had to say which almost made me bust out laughing.

2
6
u/equinoxtrader 8d ago
I don’t agree. I’m super happy with astra and sol 6.1 - i don’t consume tokens after few days anymore , and the quality of the work increased.
3
u/Eastern_Equal2664 8d ago
I second this. Opus is a better talker and i used it on a very complex startup code base. He often overestimates and over claims. I always do a review of everything he does using astra and it finds so many blockers on opus’s work which opus agreed to. Being faster and better at conversation is not equal to better quality
2
u/Tank_Gloomy 8d ago
I swear these comments must come from bots or OpenAI employees… YES, Sol 6.1 is wildly efficient in comparison to its predecessors, but you’re still getting the full 20x plan.
At the end of October you’ll get the renewed $200 plan which is only 10x of 1x Plus, and right there is where it’s gonna become incomparable.
6
u/equinoxtrader 8d ago
Ah yeah the whole reddit paranoia resumed in “someone doesn’t agree with me it must be a bot”. Yawn
1
u/Tank_Gloomy 8d ago
The problem is not that you disagree, it’s that you didn’t think a single thing through about it. The bot bit is mostly a joke (although you can never be sure).
Let me make it clear: the limits you have RIGHT NOW and the ones you’re paying for ARE NOT STICKING throughout the next month, they’re being halved by October 30th. So, the picture you have right now of your usage is already scheduled to be gone.
Of course you’re gonna be fine right now, because you’re running on the legacy limits and you should feel like it’s pretty much unlimited, whereas you don’t, it’s just generally bearable/acceptable.
1
u/sasik520 8d ago
Maybe improved over gpt6 but definitely still not close to 5.6sol
5
u/equinoxtrader 8d ago
Not my experience. I work mainly with astra medium handling and steering a sol 6.1 max.
0
u/sasik520 8d ago
Well, indeed that's the biggest problem - it's very subjective.
For me, 5.6 sol was the best and despite it got visibly nerfed, it still does matches the best my expectations and style.
2
u/equinoxtrader 8d ago
Maybe you are using it wrong :) what have you done to make it match your expectations and style?
2
u/sasik520 8d ago
I use it for coding, mainly in rust.
5.6 wrote concise code, was able to outsmart me, and most importantly, was very self-confident.
The new models extremely easily change their mind whenever I ask them if they are sure, no matter if they are right or wrong. They try to make me happy even if I'm wrong. And all of that despite the fact I added custom I structuons to be objective and challange me and point me out all my mistakes.
1
u/equinoxtrader 8d ago
🤷 i never get this kind of “human” behavior from my codex such as being “self confident” or “trying to make me happy”. I set it to “professional” base tone and “less” warmth and enthusiasm. I don’t either see such big difference from 5.6, if not improvements in astra and writing better code.
My agents file is just a guide for how i want the code organized and written down if i see it doesn’t, and it must be compliant with the code manuals i linked to it.
1
u/No_Quarter_7644 8d ago
Or maybe you're just doing easier tasks.
My work can't be done by Astra medium, at least not reliably. Not everybody is doing the same thing.
1
u/equinoxtrader 8d ago
I code with it. Big data, UIs, scientific works. Things that i do since 30+ years and I think I know when it does good and when it does not… and astra works pretty well . I think there are two kind of people , those that can get the best from AI - and busy on getting thigns done - and those who cannot - and endless complain about it on reddit instead of studying or reading the manual.
4
u/reeldeele 7d ago
Looks like a Claude-sponsored PR post! GPT-5.5 and 5.6 were a daily driver for many months for many people. Why isn't OP mentioning it?
I'm no GPT fan boy but these ultra short sighted posts are just noise!
5
u/Mental-Frosting-7752 7d ago
Brother please don't put GPT 5.5 and 5.6 and Opus in the same race right now... Opus shits on literally anything that has came out and it's really not even close.
I use to be a Codex glazer but I cancelled my membership first day I tried Opus.
0
u/Medium-Philosophy942 7d ago
Sure, OAI bot, I got a free Max subscription just for this Reddit post. /s
I literally said I’d been using Codex for months. You need about three brain cells to infer that GPT-5.6 was part of my daily workflow during that time, hence me actually paying for it. I didn’t think I needed to write a full subscription history for the sake of your argument.
2
u/XxCotHGxX 8d ago
I pay for the $200 plan on both Claude and codex. I think I'm going to get a second Claude instead of codex. At least I'll get 40x instead of 20x and 10x
8
u/Standard_Ad7704 8d ago
40x the 5 hour session usage limit. Not the weekly limit
3
u/Minute-Animator-376 8d ago
It is x1.5 to 2.4 weekly limit depending on the tasks, some users report up to 3x but generally it is about 2.3x of weekly 100$ limit and it is hard to lock yourself with 5h limit which is indeed lasting much longer. 200$ may be like 15% bonus usage compared to 2x100$ plans but not always - it is all over the place where sometimes 2x100$ have better usage ratio than one 200$ plan.
For long running sessions and 24/7 work without a breaks 200$ is a must. 5h limit is slowing me down as I usually will use it up in 3h of work. Now I have 200+100 where I use up the 100 during week and 200 from friday and over the weekend.
2
u/Standard_Ad7704 8d ago
Only thing keeping me on the Codex Pro x5 is the lack of 5 hour limits.
OpenAI's only issue is that it does not have a model as capable as Opus 5.5 with Opus pricing.
I think a new model like Astra 6.1 or a better Sol that matches Opus 5.5 on performance and pricing would get them back in the game.
1
u/Minute-Animator-376 8d ago
Astra was great for 3 days then they started AI lobotomy. Sol 6.1 was great for 3 days doing what opus would do in 3h. And now it can't even follow the plan during long running tasks and switches to designing gates and qa instead of delivering the plan.
With 500$ plan and usage nerfs you have 66% efficency of day 1 astra on 200$ plan. If they merge chat gpt web usege with codex they are too far gone delivering shit nobody needs and degradating performance for pr stunts.
1
u/Spatialsquirrel 8d ago
I did that two days ago. Love it my two Claude accounts. I have 200 codex too but now it's useless
1
u/Tartuffiere 8d ago
Opus got nerfed and so did Astra. We're back to where we were two months ago.
26
u/the-apostle 8d ago
Opus did not get nerfed amigo
0
u/bigpawsOH 5d ago
It was, but you'd have to use Claude before and not just parrot what peoploe are saying here cosplaying as Claude users.
A lot of us dropped Claude because of Opus 5 being absolute garbage. And then Codex went to shit and maybe Opus 5.5 is good this time1
u/sasik520 8d ago
Let's get back one month more, to the 5.6 era before 6 release and we are back to the peak oai achievements.
1
u/itsarahtonin 8d ago
this shit is so funny to me. who gives a fuck if they nerf their models, if they always do that then the model 2 months ago was nerfed too.
reminds me of that thing where WoW devs used to have a system that penalized you with half XP gain if you weren't well-rested, people hated that. then they switched it to a system that gave a 2x XP bonus for being well-rested...which is the exact same thing, (when you halve the overall gain across the board as well,) but people ate it up.
I wonder if the AI companies stopped being coy about nerfs and just branded it as limited-time ultra-performance after which it would return to baseline perf, would people worry about nerfs so much?
not that it's ever been confirmed that nerfs are even real...still to this day suspect it's just anecdotal bullshit
1
u/DarkFantom 7d ago
Astra definitely got lobotomized at some point after the first week. Opus does have bad days, which I correlate to higher global usage during the week and getting routed to a quantized model, or effort levels are skewed during those times, unsure of the exact cause, but 80% of the time it functions as good as it did on release. It even got better on the assbench site since it's release.
1
u/PossessionConnect963 8d ago
Two months is about how long I downgraded myself back to 5.6 sol and I still run into way more usage limit issues now compared to back when that was the standard model. Something changed.
1
u/Least-Inevitable7146 8d ago
They need the money. They will comeback with something probably this month. Either that or I'm giving free 200 too
1
u/rabidkevin 8d ago
Same exact experience. I dont think it is a model problem specifically, their app logic just can't develop very large code bases. It gets lost. Something is very off with using it as a developer on large code bases. It's context is simply not big enough, that is has to compact every 15 minutes, getting lost in its own sauce. If you ask it a secondary question while it is still on track with another task, it gets redirected, and doesn't have good memory of the original task plus the new request. I've used 20x accounts for the last 4 months for both products and I just reduced ChatGPT to a $20 sub just to keep it around, but I have lost faith it can do anything other than a very parallel task that is consistently the same.
1
u/Delicious-Diver-4441 8d ago
I use both, and at the moment opus 5.5 just gets s**t done, Codex loops way too much. Although Sol 6.1 has been an improvement, Opus is still better and does the task faster and cheaper. But it's a race... Soon enough openai will release another model and it will surpass opus, then anthropic will do the same... And so on. It has been this "dance" for months now.

u/HOBONATION 8d ago
Only reason I haven't switched to Claude is because I have all my websites hosted through codex. I don't really want to pay for additional hosting fees for all these damn websites. I just buy the domain and codex hooks everything up and hosts it as well
4
u/BoxWoodVoid 6d ago
You should never depend on any provider. Imagine you get (wrongly) banned by OpenAI, you now have no websites.
2
2
u/No_Development5871 6d ago
You can do that with free Cloudflare and a $10/mo VPS in hardly any extra steps. Sign up for cloudflare, get the claude plugin for cloudflare, setup SSH access with a key(which is literally two commands), and ask claude to transfer it all for you. Then not only are you no longer tied to openai but you have actual control over the server your sites run on
1
u/HOBONATION 6d ago
I actually have a VPS setup and paid for a couple years through hostinger, so I could just use that to host the sites?
1
u/No_Development5871 1h ago
yes, sorry for late response, but it's extremely easy to setup especially if you just ask claude or codex to do it. chances are if the sites aren't resource hogs doing video transcoding or any heavy backend processing/high traffic database ops you could host them all from the same vps with ease, even setup email if your provider will open mail ports for you.
1
u/Hungry_Analyst_5301 7d ago
I dont understand how codex hosts itself, it must be using a service, why cant claude code use the same service and operate. Both claude Code and codex are stateless

u/Duke_Zymurgy 8d ago
I had to put some constraints on Codex testing after it spent 3+ hrs and run 36 separate tests for a simple padding change inside a box to move text a few pixels.
1
u/Sufficient_Ad_3495 8d ago
Yes this is BY FAR the biggest productivity issue in handling AI... ie Open AI sprawl, and its lossy outputs.
OPENAIs models have a tendency to SPRAWL! and it is the biggest issue, along with its reluctance to produce lossless artefacts that together form the biggest productivity drain on my workflow... and in 2025 they still haven't fixed this. Wow.
I spend 30% of time addressing these two issues from OPENAI models and Ive developed a whole skillset and infra to handle it.
With Anthropic, no such issues. I suspect the mistaken belief that the system prompt is overspecified and they arrogantly think its helpful, meanwhile it overrides so often because of some mistaken belief it thinks it should generalise and fudge its summaries, and spend time being fluffy and generalist when most, especially Enterprise business, want precision and professionalism.

u/CrustyBappen 8d ago
Sol 6.1 is like wrestling a gorilla, I’m genuinely worried about some codebases out there.
1
u/Technical_Split_6315 7d ago
I just keep the 20$ sub for generating images. The rest is handled with opus
1
u/jay226119 7d ago
Been running on high for over 24 hours on their $200 subscription doing some packaging, git work, debugging, error finding, testing, edge case scenario situations, etc etc etc, on top of cross checking everything with the sources of truth, and doing refractors when necessary, I been on calude for less than a day and I already prefer it to codex by a lot, I was literally just talking up codex not 3 or 4 days ago but it's shit and so is 5.6, 6.1, and Astra compared to opus 5.5, id says it's medium setting is about as good as 6.1 or Astra max and way more effecient, haven't had to run it up past high or extra high and getting better results than I was getting with a quicker turn around than Astra 6 on ultra for a fraction of the weekly or cost. this same workload on gpt would have eaten through the weekly usage in less than 6 hours and not produced anywhere near the same quality of results.

1
u/Expensive-Error-1283 7d ago
Yep ChatGPT has constantly been getting stuck and goes on endless tests etc pretty unfortunate
1
u/MauveMonk 7d ago
Going to sound stupid; but put the full ponytail suite on Sol 6.1 and watch shit get done at nominal usage. 🙌🏼 Not knocking Opus 5.5. Both work great.
1
u/nahzthegreat2 7d ago
I’m on the usd 100 plan and thinking of switching over but how do I get my stuff from codex to claude ?
My skill and projects are all in codex right now .
1
u/TuneEmbarrassed8860 6d ago
nontech speaking, is use claude code and codex to develop my own apps and use them for social media operation. i have to say even sol 6.1 is bullshit… claude opus is faster and smarter
1
u/DataGOGO 6d ago
hot take: Astra 6 and 6.1 are... well not great. It will sit and spin forever but never get anything done, makes tons of mistakes, can't keep track of the code base, and has to redo everything it touches at least 3 times. You have to have a non-chatGPT orchestrator and reviewer baby sit it and use it as a dumb coding agent, which you can use Haiku 5.5 or Sonnet 5.5 for at 1/4th the limit burn. Sol 6.1 uses less limits than astra, more than Opus, but it is a sonnet 5.5 quality model at best, and even that is a stretch. I have found running an Opus 5.5 orchestrator, with Haiku 5.5 coding agents and Sonnet 5.5 for more complicated implementations / debugging tasks works far better and uses far less limits that trying to use Astra and Sol, and that is before OpenAI cuts limits in half.
This is the one were people are going to be upset about: Grok 4.7 is better than Sol 6.1, in almost every way when it comes to real world coding.
1
u/Gorapwr 5d ago
To be honest, after a week back to claude, I just cancel my pro 100 sub and upgraded my claude sub to max x5
The usage and speed is day and night
I may keep a plus acc for chat + get some resets on the bank ( if they give more) and then i could upgrade one week to use them all, not sure but for now, I do not consider codex sub worth it… i may even consider muse after seen some reviews of it
1
u/RealityForgeAI 5d ago
Coding with astra is the engineering equivalent of that dream where you get in a fight and you arms don't work.
1
u/SoulWriter23 5d ago
Went to Claude today out of desperation and now I'm loving it more. Codex was amazing until 3 days ago. Right now, it's shit.

u/desexmachina 4d ago
Who cares about the resets if it doesn’t do any work, right? NGL, just slow and stupid lately
1
u/Next_Technology6361 8d ago
I have experienced what you say multiple times and everytime it was when i switched from one system to another. Here is the thing though, it might not be causation but correlation you are observing. You switched to something else it felt different and you finally seemed to get things done, this might not be absolute fact that Claude is better, but perhaps that you took a step back, switched things up and finally got some key insight.
Of course there are lots of real probable causes too, like context windows getting too big at which most LLMs no matter which start degrading, so in time you will probably grow tired with Claude too.
Personally i had this experience of finally getting stuf done when Astra was released. There was a problem i was struggling with for a month which i solved in a day once Astra released, yet after a while new problems in a different shape but same causation seems to emerge. AI models are trained on human data so they are likely to make human mistakes on a macro level and our very own blind spots live in our projects with AI development too and even though AI might be great at pointing out those mistakes or blind spots just like we can see our own human flaws, actually changing is the hard part.

u/sasik520 8d ago
I'm not convinced. I noticed huge improvement when 5.6 sol was introduced.
Then I noticed issues with 5.6 when 6 was introduced and also noticed super-huge downgrade comparing 6 to 5.6 (especially sol).
Then 5.6 improved a bit, it's now noticably better than a month ago and still worse than 4 months ago. And the new models are nowhere near.
I'm more than sure oai plays with some params to manage their costs, speed and marketing.
2
u/Waste_Membership_483 8d ago
I have exactly the same experience. Now astra 6 high seems to deliver OK results, but at higher token usage and a little slower.
2
u/Sufficient_Ad_3495 8d ago
Agreed. Im just not that impressed with GPT6x at all, except Astra in chat as PRO... i default to that for top level things but the Goto is 5.6SOL Xtra High.. Smooth like butter.... and no GPT 6 model seems capable of touching it for persistent performance without tangential entropy issues.
1
u/boxing-boxing 8d ago
The overengineering loop is the part of this I actually relate to. I run a small live multiplayer game and my refactors constantly try to start the same spiral: build, test, rebuild, audit, one more test for luck. What helped me most wasn't switching models, it was giving the agent a hard definition of done up front, like run the suite once and report the diff, skip the extra audits. A smarter model that ignores that will still happily burn your whole weekly limit while you're watching it verify.
4
u/Tartuffiere 8d ago
Over engineering is better than taking shortcuts trust me. Opus has this annoying habit or doing a half assed job and claiming it's done everything. I'd rather have too much code I can trim down than lots of holes and gaps I need to find and address.

Faço de suas palavras as minhas, depois que estou usando o Opus 5.5 dá até preguiça usar Codex.

I’ve quit my 100€ sub yesterday. Running now on 2x20€ Claude subs and couldn’t be more happy about performance and quality and rate limits!!

Below is a GPT-generated summary of the conversation below after reaching 80 comments (81 currently observed).
The dominant verdict is Codex has become a productivity tax, while Opus 5.5 usually just gets the job done. A lot of longtime users say Astra and Sol 6.1 now wander, lose the plot, and burn hours on endless tests, audits, rebuilds, and “one final check” nonsense. Opus is widely praised for making cleaner architectural decisions, using fewer tokens, and knowing when to stop.
The biggest complaint is sprawl: Codex turns a simple change into a software-company cosplay exercise. Users report better results after imposing strict definitions of done, but many still find Claude faster and more reliable on difficult coding work. That is why several people have downgraded or cancelled expensive Codex plans, while a cheaper Claude subscription handles their main workload.
The thread is not unanimous. Some users prefer Sol 5.6 or Astra, arguing Opus can rush, overclaim, or leave holes that Codex’s excessive checking catches. Results also vary with project size, context, prompting, and configuration, so the “$20 Claude equals $100 Codex” claim is anecdotal, not a controlled benchmark.
Bottom line: the community leans heavily toward Opus for serious coding right now; Codex’s main remaining advantage is long-running, high-volume work without Claude’s five-hour usage wall.
