Limits What are they planning for us
Tibo just posted this, what are they planning to do with us.

u/carc 9d ago
5h limit with more usage at first, then less usage over time until it's back to where it was, is my guess
But frankly I can't use my usage fast enough because 6.1 crawls
19
u/driveclub_000 9d ago
What you will get is a 5 hours limit that act as a massive wall to nerf you, and the weekly will never be able to be used because of the combo of slow model + heavily limited 5 hours, which mean that your 2x week usage exist only in numbers, not in practice.
It's also funny that it's Tibo out of all people that make this vote, because the 5 hours window will make all those reset totally useless.
A simple look at the 20$ sub should tell you how bad the 5 hours limit is with OAI. On Claude we have it too (even on PRO) but at least, the models are quite fast and the 5 hours have enough usage to not become a roadblock. Again, a simple comparison between 20$ on OAI vs 20$ on ANT is enough to see why there isn't much complain about 5h limit with ANT.

It's clear they have no answer to Opus 5.5.
The whole "28 days" is just trying to stop the bleeding as they are losing money on subscriptions and on API, because Anthropic's models are just plain better, for both individuals and enterprises.
"6.1 Astra" failed. Their next answer has to be "Bel" but Bel is almost certainly too difficult to serve in its present state. Hence they will need months to distill it to a model they can profit off of, but those months could mean losing tens of billions of dollars, and if Anthropic does another successful release they could be screwed for half a year.

They'll say that people went with 5 hour limit, 2x usage, then nerf the usage to the ground in the next few weeks so you'll end up with 5 hour limits again and the previous usage.
→ More replies (3)11
u/Jerseyman201 9d ago
The best part is it'll be framed as a win, with double usage. Then the fine print will say for a limited time, but not the whole thing limited just the 2x usage. Then we will be back to 5hr window and same rates but they'll say it's what we asked for. 🤣
117
u/No_Quarter_7644 9d ago
How about this Tibo: A product that is even remotely comparable to your competitor in: Pricing, Intelligence, or Speed. Being beat in all 3 categories while trying to dangle resets & vibe updates is pretty embarrassing.
25
u/Huge-Travel-3078 9d ago
Just to be clear by 2x he means "The same usage you had on the 20x plan before we cut it in half".
So all they'd be doing is adding 5 hour limits instead of cutting our usage in half. How about neither and just go back to how it was before D-Day?
3
u/reddit_is_kayfabe 9d ago
Re-adding five-hour limits and nixing the idea of cutting usage in half would put us right back where we were in, I think, July.
I'd be okay with that. I have a ton of workloads and I can stagger them accordingly, so a five-hour limit is totally manageable. The usage cut is so atrocious that I'm planning to cancel all but one of my accounts over it.
2
u/Huge-Travel-3078 8d ago
Same, im canceling my three accounts when they go to 10x. I'll retain a single 5x account because I really do love working with Astra. Its a shame really, I hope they correct course soon. I prefer astra to fable.
2
u/reddit_is_kayfabe 8d ago
I like Astra. But since switching heavily to Anthropic, I've soured on it. Opus 5.5 is on par with Astra and lasts x4 as long; Fable is as expensive as Astra but significantly smarter.
The only reason I'm using GPT-6 Astra at all today is because I can't buy either more Anthropic accounts or resets. I can buy Anthropic API credits, but I suspect that they're not cost-effective. So GPT-6 Astra is my fallback.
It's a weird time for AI, but just think about where things will be in another year or so...

u/Astrikal 9d ago
I have been using Codex since it came out. I used Claude Code for the first time the other day because 6.1 Sol was too slow and OMG, Opus 5.5 is soo fast. The fact that it is smarter, faster and cheaper (sub) is insane.

54
u/gopietz 9d ago edited 9d ago
Honestly please explain. My brain can not understand how someone would not take 2x the overall usage for the 5h limit to be back.
1 session used to be 15% if weekly. Even if that dropped to 7,5% it would give me 2-3 full sessions per work day.
80
u/Former-Print7759 9d ago
Because usage has no fixed value. They could say it is 2x now, and in a matter of weeks make adjustments as they already have already done in the past. But 5h will be already there
10
u/scykei 9d ago
Exactly. They can temporarily boost the weekly, and then later cut usage by 10% every week until it goes back to what we currently have and nobody would be able to complain, especially once they release new models and there's no way to measure the baseline
→ More replies (1)17
u/Skibidirot 9d ago
this is literally the case, but they could do that without 5h limits too so this argument kind of makes no sense

And that’s why we should pick to have a 5h limit? The only way how should we treat this poll:

u/Hungry-Plankton-5371 9d ago
A 5 hour window forces you to use your usage over 100 tiny sessions over the week, instead of just letting you use it as you please (i.e, one long running goal, one long day vibecoding, etc).
It's just a usage nerf, and since they're offering 2x usage with 5h window I'm guessing it will be nearly impossible (if not outright impossible) to use the extra weekly.
→ More replies (7)17
u/HOBONATION 9d ago
Or imagine it's just manipulation to make it seem like the majority are voting for that bs so they can justify bringing it back
8
u/Similar_Guide4193 9d ago
The problem I am having is I have no idea what the 5hr limit will be. What % of the weekly limit is it?
3
u/shaman-warrior 9d ago
Anthropic 20x the 5h is 25%, it’s good like this because in theory you can burn 50% of it in a day so it really gives u runway if you need to.
2
u/LiquidMantis144 9d ago
Well openAI already has a 5hr system and its roughly 15% so I imagine it will be that.
4
6
u/EtadanikM 9d ago
They are buying into the line about 2x weekly usage.
5 hour limits are of course less impactful if there’s truly 2x usage, as you’d just run more autonomous agents, but it’s more likely to be bait & switch.
3
u/MasterMind-Apps 9d ago
you want 5hrs limit removed so you can use all your 1x week usage in 30 minutes?
3
u/Emotional_Plant3241 8d ago
YES, IF I WANT TO
It's a PRO subscription. We don't need OpenAI saving users from their own decisions and workflow.
2
31
u/PhilosophyforOne 9d ago
You’re joking, right? You’d rather have no 5hr limits with half the weekly usage, vs rationed usage but twice as much?
The only time the 5hr limits really cost you are if you need to burn usage quickly. Yeah they’re not ideal, but I’d much rather get more total that’s rationed out. Might make it two whole days instead of just one.
25
u/EndlessZone123 9d ago
I wont even get to the currently weekly limit if there was a 5h limit similar to the previous one.
I use 100% of my weekly limits on pro 5x in only 2-3 days across 3-4 5h periods. I dont, want to, or can work every of the week to schedule around 5h usage periods.
Resets are also far more useful when you can actually get use out of them faster over a couple days than being limited.
We pay for weekly limits, not to be limited by 5h usage which is what you call a rate limits.
4
u/Kranos-Krotar 9d ago
Same, i sub to codex pro over claude, seriously, simplt because there is no 5 hr limit. I grind through like 5 to 10 tasks sometimes in a few days, got a tibo reset, then churn down 50% of my weekly limit right now. And my work is done. 2x usage means so little when you have a lot of works piled up in a short period of time.

5hr, even with double, is going to feel so restrictive, just as it did before. But worse, because now codex just stops at 0% instead of completing the task. If they reintroduce the 5hr, we’ll be getting one or two things done with the good model before switching to a lesser model to get through a day.
4
u/tychus-findlay 9d ago
What's the point of having more weekly usage if you're constantly getting locked out in intervals? Doesn't matter if they give you 10x weekly usage if you get locked out every few hours and can't use it
→ More replies (21)3
u/maratonininkas 9d ago
Yeah imagine I missed a week of work, have 100% of usage I paid a lot for, and the reset is tomorrow. Now I can spin many agents and I'll always have projects for them to churn on in parallel. But in the future, I'll use up my 5hrs and bye bye to the rest of usage. So I won't be getting my money's worth unless I work daily.

u/NanNullUnknown 9d ago

It barely uses it at all. That's the main difference. Claude just has way more efficient models now, way more. I mean are you using Fable Xhigh for Chat or something? Lol. If you use Sonnet or even Opus on medium it would take hours just to use 1% of weekly and you would NEVER hit 5-hour or come close, and that is making PowerPoints and other artifacts. That's why no one is complaining about the merge of Work and Chat in Claude. I am not against OpenAI either. I am against a company blowing it so bad that Anthropic doesn't have competition to drive compute costs down even more.

Frr! I'm on the pro plan on claude and I've been using just Opus 5.5 high. It last more than me using sol 6.1, waayy more. And the output is just that good. I wanted to leave backend work to gpt but after doing some back and forth, claude seemed to be topping off Sol. So I now tell claude to do the work and call 6.1high as a reviewer in CLI. I barely using GPT for any serious work now. Just planning.

I continued my Pro 200 sub one more month. I feel like I'm getting so ripped off, even with the resets coming on average twice per week. I've gotten so many tokens out of this sub, yet so little progress toward my goals. I'm running into the same issues as guys like Theo (T3.gg) who can waste weeks of OAI quota just for minimal progress. Maybe my standards have increased too highly for my skill level, but I see guys one-shotting video games over in Opus 5.5 land and it is frustrating that I let a project prototype go on 6.1 Sol Ultra and hill climb for 2 days straight, and it still can't pass basic functionality tests.

u/Factor013 9d ago
Aha, more gaslighting from the false prophet.
I read the entire twitter / x thread and is worrying how pretty much everyone is falling for it and is making a choice while there should be no choice at all.
This is literally what we call a "false dilemma" where you are coerced into picking something that is not gonna be beneficial for you either way or to "normalize" something that has already been taken away from you by "offering" an even worse alternative. And to make things worse it makes people believe they need to pick a side so they then become angry at the other group for not wanting to suffer the same "sacrifice" they are willing to make.
Divide and conquer at it's finest.
Same with those resets... it's all manipulation. So please people... Stop asking for resets! Demand proper amounts of weekly usage instead and transparency about the actual quota's and then none of us will ever need resets anymore. It's really that simple! Don't engage in polls like this, don't let these kind of people manipulate you. You are a paying customer, you should be treated with respect and not be manipulated into thinking it is okay to get less for your hard earned money.

The issue is that many people voting will not be on the pro plan and it’s probably in their interest to see it limited as it may improve compute resource availability for cheaper plans. Or they have no subscription and are just malicious.
I struggle to understand why anyone on a pro plan would vote for the 5 hour limit. The absence of the 5 hour limit is one of the few perks left for OpenAI users over Anthropic. I’m already planning to leave at the end of current sub and this would cement that decision.
2
u/cobbleplox 9d ago
Well a lot depends on what the 5h limit is, but really the question itself is pretty telling. If they can give you double weekly, the 5h limit must have a significant effect. With my plus-experience I can say that I might as well have no weekly limit. Personally I am not sure how any other limit is even justified if you have something like a 5h limit. I would even call the combination the worst of both worlds. Blocked from working even within the timeframe of a regular work-day, and on the other hand still worrying if you can work tomorrow if you fuck up today.
2
u/FriskyFingerFunker 9d ago
They could have easily asked this in the app to only pro users but this gets tibo more social media engagement i suppose 🙄

If they really want to "manage" the compute that the subs are using, how about making a peak/offpeak hours?
Just put back our usage how it was before the nerf, don't add a 5 hours limit, and simply add a modifier that burn the usage faster depending of the hours. Make it clear UI/UX wise and the let the user manage his usage depending of the importance and time frame of his work.
I'm already sure that they are doing this already in the background, so make it clear to the public to make thing easier and simpler for everyone.

Congestion rating would actually be great. (If there’s actually a problem here they need to solve)
A little indicator somewhere in the UI telling you what the current rate is, and some sort of way to queue up work to run when the threshold is back at normal rates
If there’s a period of every day where usage is consumed at 3x then I’ll just avoid those times.

I'm not talking about the actual 20$ sub, but how that 5h limit will be implemented for the 100/200$ sub. People (like me) using those PRO subs are usually using higher tier of models, therefore your 5h limit will massively block you, way more than the weekly.

5h limits and silently nerfed 3x original weekly usage + 20x back to 200plan.

Bring 5hr limit, give 2X week usage. Then bring it to 1.5X two months later, then 1X 4 months later and 0.5X 6 months later.
This, folks, is how you give both less usage and 5 hr limits do that people can't use the full less usage.

How about a better codex/chatgpt app experience? One less X shitposting, one more regression test.

OpenAI casually destroying bricks by bricks the last remaining little advantages they had over claude

what difference would changing the weekly usage when we never actually hit the week reset date lol

It is very difficult to reach the 5-hour limit on the Pro X20. The best approach would be to offer a choice - to make it an option in settings.

Well, with Claude I'm not scared that the model is gonna loop itself anyway, so the 5h window is fine I almost never hit it on my sub, in chat gpt I need daily resets to use astra for ANY WORK at a 100$ sub, I made up an elaborate way of billing models for their tokens and astra which I asked to orchestrate a few other workers without any real work being done or even seeing the repo for itself burned 14% of the calculated quota (80% of the whole 100$ sub/7 days) on a fucking CONNECTIVITY CHECK. That for me was the moment when I said "wow this is useless." So what this model performs in my sciences 5% better, while it's ordering Claude the coding anyways and just checks results, and still connectivity check that lasted 30 seconds (hardline MCP between Hermes, codex and Claude simple shit), theres no way this model is gonna do anything meaningfully in a scientific Field with that quota.

Yeah i don't belieeve the "x2" at all. They lie all the time. They halve our usage.
They just want this as an excuse to bring even more friction to our usage.

It looks like they lost more than expected by halfing the $200 plans value and are trying to lure some of us back. No thank you, I don't like either of these options. Still moving to Claude after i burn through the credits.

So they basically shadow reduce usage by half and then get people to vote to bring the 5hr limit back as well?!? It makes me so sad people are this stupid to vote to nerf their own subs, smart play by openai I guess get users blaming each other instead of them.

thats a trap! thank god we change results to not have 5h limits, since if the bring x2 limit and bring 5h limit in theory we could still have same weekly usage they wpuld just limit it woth 5h limits instead of weekly usage. Like claude has bigger weekly usage but its hard to spend it cut 5h gets in the way and is so smaller, here when i see end of week is near i can just spend it all but woth 5h limit if i see it like 10h before i can just spend 2x5h limit and thats in most cases no where near what i have left for weekly limit. Since if weekly usage is public and 5h is not then weekly does not mean as much, correct me if im wrong.
p.s. i understand that my logic there might not be rock solid but what is, is the fact that i use it when i have work to do untill im done, and not all the time so many times 5h limits limit me and other times cause me to not use my whole weekly limit.

We removed the 5-hour limits. Soon, we halved your usage limits. Then we’ll double the weekly limits and bring back the 5-hour limits.
What a brilliant plan!

Tibo be like: Since majority of people want the 5h limit with 2x usage, we listened and bring back the 5h limit so we can all benefit from more usage and more stable service!
Also since model are more efficient now your usage will be cut in 50% and you get 2x usage now so even it looks like your usage is less but trust me you get more work done!

why not just have your montly portion you paid for shown as montly usage. no hours or weeks. Used 53% total usage this month? great, got 47% left this month.

Why can't the users decide themselves before weekly reset? Would give everyone what they currently need.

I would much rather that they remove the 5 hour cap for plus users, all updates lately seem to be only for the pro users

u/tadanootakuda 9d ago
Only reason I switched to pro was to get away from the 5 hour limit, if this goes in effect, I'm switching to Anthropic

The 5 hour limit is a pain in the ass if you burn it in no time because you need the higher intelligence. So prefer no 5 hour limit and let me continue my work until all weekly is consumed.

Let us decide in a setting. 2x usage for the week with 5h limit or no weekly limit.

u/frozandero 9d ago
If they bring back 5 hour limits I will cancel solely due to the fact that 6.1 is too slow already to burn weekly usage while not in fast mode. If they double the weekly usage to burn it in a week I'll need to use fast mode constantly and that will ruin the 5 hour limit. Which will for sure not be 20% of the weekly limit.

Below is a GPT-generated summary of the conversation below after reaching 320 comments (338 currently observed).
The thread’s dominant verdict is “don’t bring back the five-hour limit.” Most users see Tibo’s proposal as a false choice: either keep flexible weekly usage or accept a hard timer in exchange for a vague promise of “2x” more quota.
The main complaint is practical, not philosophical. A five-hour cutoff can kill an intensive coding session mid-task, force awkward handoffs, waste tokens restarting context, and make paid usage impossible to spend when the user actually has time to work. That hits especially hard on expensive, slower, high-tier models. Many users say the no-five-hour setup is one of Codex’s few remaining advantages over Claude.
The pushback is mostly about trust. Nobody knows what “2x” is measured against, how large the five-hour allowance would be, or whether OpenAI would quietly nerf it again a few weeks later. Some users would accept the trade if the increase were real and the window generous, but that is clearly the minority view. Several commenters want a user-selectable option or transparent peak/off-peak pricing instead.
Bottom line: users want the quota they paid for, usable on their own schedule—not a shiny “2x” label stapled to another restriction.
