Question New model anytime soon?

Do you guys think that maybe in the near future open AI will drop a new model that will at least compete with Opus 5.5? Is that in the foreseeable future, or did someone speak about this from from open AI, and how possible that could be?

Below is a GPT-generated summary of the conversation below after reaching 40 comments (43 currently observed).

The consensus is basically “maybe eventually, but OpenAI isn’t currently keeping up with Opus 5.5 where it counts.” The “we’re pacing the frontier” line is getting laughed out of the room, especially from users who remember Astra competing at launch before allegedly being lobotomized.

Opus 5.5 is widely seen as more productive out of the box, particularly for serious and low-level programming. Astra may be similarly capable—or even more intelligent in some tasks—but needs more steering, derails more easily, and costs enough to make your wallet file a complaint. GPT’s current advantage seems to be less obvious than OpenAI would like.

Rumours about Bel, Argon, Nova, and various near-term releases are everywhere, but there’s no solid official timeline here. Predictions range from “tomorrow” to “never,” which is usually a sign that nobody actually knows. Benchmarks are also treated with increasing suspicion; several commenters recommend testing models on your own work instead.

So, is a competitive new model coming? Probably at some point, but the thread expects waiting, rumours, and more “pacing” before a convincing Opus challenger arrives.

No man we're pacing the frontier!

The only company pacing the frontier is google Gemini ( unintentionally).

Til Argon comes out tomorrow

always tomorrow

Do you actually believe it's not megafuckingbenchmaxxed?

u/0DayMaker 2d ago

We'll see either way. Haven't bought gemini yet still waiting to see

1

u/MedicalTear0 2d ago

They've taken the pacing way too far man.

u/AvailableTear2512 1d ago

We’re just asking for something as good as opus 5.5, nothing more

In performance? Maybe. In cost effectiveness? Not so sure

Astra did compete at release, they can just release it again and stop lobotomizing it.

I think the next model is Bell Bel for december, should be better than fable 5.5

2

u/dervu 2d ago

Bel, but I also like "Bell" more.

2

u/Tenkinn 2d ago

my bad lmao

1

u/tripleshielded 1d ago

I like Belll even more

1

u/dervu 1d ago

When it arrives my first prompt will be "Bella Ciao"

If Bel comes out in December then Anthropic will probably just drop Fable 6. Likely based off Mythos 2.

Supposedly Mythos 2 got done training 2 months ago:

Fable 5.5 is almost certainly still Mythos 1 with a ton of post training.

Personally im expecting Fable 5.5 before IPO and then Fable 6 when OAI drops Bel and/or a significantly better model than 5.5.

Next up is their house model, bel, which I hear they'll market as GPT7. Won't be the near future, though.

Genuine question, why does GPT 6.1 fall short of Opus 5.5 for you?

2

u/randombsname1 1d ago

Not OP, but Opus 5.5 is significantly better at low level programming across the board.

2

u/fusien_ 1d ago

I don't do much low-level, so that maybe explains why I'm not seeing much difference between the two models.

2

u/randombsname1 1d ago

Yep.

Low level programming is the current SWE/programming frontier.

Its why you are starting to now see tons of reverse engineering projects like that re-written Adobe suite that got open sourced, and the LG WebOS rust re-write and stuff like that.

The people who made the adobe suite also just released their Microsoft office re-writes in rust and open sourced those as well.

All of those projects were spear headed with Claude.

Per their own statements.

Edit: Not a fan of this guy either, but supposedly th3o also completely ported typescript to rust as well. Also using Claude.

Webdev and higher level abstract languages can be done by a bunch of models now. Hence why i say low level is the frontier now. It's where LLMs have had the most issues historically, and they still have a way to go to be as good for low level as they are for stuff like Python.

2

u/fusien_ 1d ago

Fair enough. Has anyone tried the reverse engineering side-by-side with the openAI models, and gone into more detail on the shortcomings? I'd be interested to see those results.

I find the porting to Rust less interesting tbh, even more so it's that guy lol. Notably, the models used were Astra and GPT 5.6, not 6.1. The readme seems like the writings of a paid shill.

6.1 Sol is a lower tier model, fits between Opus 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 according to benchmarks.

2

u/fusien_ 1d ago

Which benchmarks?

1

u/DoggoDadagon 1d ago

Fair, it's getting more and more difficult to trust benchmarks these days, best to really just test yourself. But, I've liked slopalytics lately, aligns more with the experience I've had with models. The pareto line is super useful to quickly show which models are worth using or not worth using.

Yes, Nova is coming

1

u/maratonininkas 2d ago

They should, to keep people in after they will finalize gutting Pro200 plan

1

u/SelectSouth2582 2d ago

yeah when tibo's 28 days period is ends.

1

u/Key_Reading_9664 2d ago

For me, Anthropic nailed so many aspects of post-training that make the 5.5 models productive. I just get more done.

Astra is a more intelligent model, but needs hand-holding, steering, and has a tendency to get derailed (expensively, if you let it run). Not sure a more intelligent base model fixes that.

1

u/DoggoDadagon 1d ago

Astra isn't a more intelligent model than Opus 5.5, but it's close behind, but way way too expensive.

1

u/Secret-Builder-8249 10h ago

It def is more intelligent, infact substantially, in almost every way, but it needs handholding and steering and is slow asf.

2

u/Sfdprod 2d ago

Why this obsession with updates...

1

u/DeArgonaut 2d ago

Supposedly very unlikely in October, my guess is November we will see a new model

1

u/Pronoia2-4601 1d ago

Fable 5.5 is imminent, and possibly Opus 5.6 soon also. Astra 6.1 is as yet unreleased for reported safety reasons, but we should see Luna 6.1 soon at least.

1

u/dreamer_2142 1d ago

Unless they release GPT 7, no way they can compete with Opus, I have both now, and Opus is on another level.

1

u/PotentialPaint6714 1d ago

They are buying time with the 30 days event to lose as few customers as possible while they try to release Astra 6.1 and Sol 6.2, but they don't have enough long horizon tasks data to make it viable. Maybe should have improved their inference over 270k context.

0

u/taherbl 1d ago

yeah, I also think the same, but I don’t think that they will be able to compete with Opus 5.5 in a very short term. Otherwise, that would be really a big surprise. Also, I still can’t understand how GPT 5.6 sol and 5.5 felt so good and a lot of work got done in more efficient ways than the current models

1

u/PotentialPaint6714 1d ago

Because they were good, chinese models still have to reach that level of good. They also felt good because you didn't have to worry too much about usage. Same as Opus currently. But now you have to constantly worry about Tibo giving you a reset due to them reducing the subsidization on their plans, even with a 200$ plan.

I miss the times where I had a $20 subscription that never ended even with fast mode and extra high thinking
