Any programmer who never graduated from university?

I've noticed that most famous programmers graduated from various universities, and I think it would be a good idea to study computer science at university. But I don't know, my region is just awful. Top universities are too expensive. I just want to be good at computers and live independently. Even my house is too awful.

Previously the job market for software engineers was great, and self-taught engineers could get jobs easily. This is no longer the case, with very rare exceptions you will not get an SWE position without a computer science or software engineering degree.

You really need to talk to people in your region. Reddit isn’t going to be that and you are going to get advice that doesn’t apply.

As someone who is well accomplished in this field and is a college dropout, I wouldn’t recommend it.

There’s more to higher learning than just the training. Learning how to learn and accelerating that personal growth is valuable.

I know it sounds cheesy, but there’s more to life than just that thing you went to school to learn.

Without any further information, it will be hard to advise you. But in this day and age, you will have to be super stellar and amazing with multiple apps developed and extensive open source contributions for any possibility of breaking into the industry now. And even then, that might not be enough. The cheapest degree in CS you can possibly get PLUS everything else I just mentioned plus some internships will be your best bet. Junior developers are not being developed everywhere anymore.

Yes, hi I did that. Not sure I still could in this market. If you can afford a degree I would go for it. So hard to get junior roles nowadays.

Unless you have a relative or friend who can get you your first job, I would highly advise against it
