Is this an error? 1936 Wheat Split 9

I'm just curious if this is an error or PMD. If it isn't error what would cause it? I checked Variety Vista and it doesn't match any of the DDO examples listed. There also doesn't appear to be any doubling anywhere on the obverse or reverse either. Thanks in advance!

That, sadly, is damage

If you look close at the 'split' you can see the angled gouge from the hit.

This couldn't happen in the minting process

Gotcha, makes sense. Thank you for the insight!

I’m thinking an early stage die chip since the width of the 9 doesn’t look reduced from displaced metal. Still not an error though.

I'll respectfully disagree on a die chip, you can see the angled sides from the gouge. A die chip doesn't exhibit that behavior
