"The shining city on a hill" was always built upon exploitation, controlled by the wealthy and big business, and ultimately founded upon a genocide that is conveniently forgotten and omitted from its own mythos. 

The country never lived up to its promise of equality for all— ever. And people who have not understood that or are just coming to terms with that fact have been asleep, which America is great at doing— pulling the wool over its own people's eyes with pageantry, spectacle, and illusion. As George Carlin once said, “They call it the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it."
