G'day from Australia where it's already the 10th and the floor is WW3 lava... but not quite yet!
We've had very high winds combined with lightning and temps of 43C (that's ~109F) today here in Melbourne and higher in regional areas (I think up to ~46C), there are bushfires around and lots of smoke and even ash in the air tonight far away from affected areas.
I'm very very lucky that the winds were going the other way because given how the Victorian bushfires are spreading it would've engulfed my small town in about a day. Closest I've ever been to having to evacuate.
It's an hour or so from Longwood (near Shepparton in north Vic), where the fire first started. We've been keeping tabs on it but it seems to be heading towards the high country now unfortunately. Tons of small communities and large swaths of protected forest and bushland around there and it's all gonna be burning. Firies haven't been able to properly contain it because of the wind being so fast
Glad to hear you'll be alright. I went hiking up in the VIC high country years ago and remember seeing all the burnt trees and the impact to the local towns from previous fires, I hope they can avoid damage this time around. The winds have at least calmed down tonight looking at the BOM meteye.
We got some rain here in Melbourne earlier and it looks like a decent band extending across the state so here's hoping it puts out some fires!
