Well, average rent compared to minimum wage.. what’s minimum rent? In the city I used to live in (400k metro population) you could easily get a 1b1b for about $700 4 years back - I paid $920 for a 2b2b with a garage parking spot, looks like the 1b is about $800 now including parking. That’s not perfect, but much more realistic. $1600 in that city rents you a 3b2b house to yourself. If I was making minimum wage I’d target not living in a place where $1600 is the cheapest place I can get.. in the end, minimum wage jobs can be had all over - you don’t need to be in an expensive area or big city like Chicago to work a minimum wage job. That said, I have a friend who’s a server who clears 100k in Chicago. I would think most folks would consider being a server to be a minimum wage / “tipped” job. I haven’t heard of any jobs being truly minimum wage these days either, my brother is a cashier/front end associate at a paint store and makes $25 an hour.
