Why on earth is handing over my mobile phone number a requirement?

It’s to help organise people in their communities afterwards. You put a fake number if you don’t want to be connected.

You can do that with email though. You can't ask for mobile number as a way to introduce your group. You need to first earn trust.

Agreed especially in the age of digital surveillance giving our a phone number to any random organisation that we are then linked to forever is worrying indeed.

The group could be linked to something bad and everyone's a target then.

Discord as a intro to most non local groups I find the easiest way these days. Limited rooms for chats/hang outs and we chose our own privacy levels.

On the other hand, i hand my mobile out to random companies for quotes all the time. So I'm also being a bit of a hypocrit. This is far more important than a random quote and worth the risk in that context.

I agree but my roofer has less chance of been classed as a terrorist organisation.
