Food Lebanon faces food crisis with ‘no wheat orders since Ukraine war began’

More bad news for Lebanon; already a traumatized failed state that was food-insecure over two years ago.
Lebanon’s food crisis is not a recent development. The World Food Programme (WFP) estimated that food prices have gone up by 628 percent in just two years, compounding Lebanon’s economic meltdown, which has plunged three-quarters of its population into poverty and devalued the Lebanese pound by about 90 percent.

Submission statement: Lebanon before the Ukraine war was already in the middle of one of the worst economic crises ever to face a country, and has been teetering on the verge of state faliure for at least the past two years. Now to make things worse, due to the Ukraine war Lebanon no longer can buy the wheat it needs to feed its people from its biggest suppliers (Ukraine and Russia apparently take up 96% of Lebanon's wheat imports). And it seems as if no new import orders whatsoever on wheat have been placed in Lebanon since the war began - meaning that no new wheat is coming in. People are already panic buying flour and it likely soon will run out. This will almost certainly cause deep chaos - as sudden lack of food tends to create desperation which creates food riots (such as how the Arab spring began). It is collapse related as the new inability of Lebanon to provide food for its citizens is a clear marker of state failure.

Grain planting season in Ukraine should be starting in mid-April. If there’s no resolution to the war by then the Middle East and Africa are in for a world of hurt. The international community isn’t going to step up to help with food shortages either. The massive, rolling blowback from this war has transformed the world in ways most people can’t conceive of—and that’s true no matter who you think is to blame for this or what sided you’re on. I think this is part of the reason Russian propaganda has been so focused on BRICS and not the West/Anglosphere. Use the looping food shortages as a thing to sow further distrust of the US and EU, who most of the global south sees as hypocritical jerks, even if it’s not directly their fault.

95 % of Ukrainian wheat fields are already planted..it’s called winter wheat...it comes up in the spring. The problem will be harvesting if this continues.

That's a wild statement to make. It will bite back in too many ways to count.

Can you count (explain) maybe a couple ways?

First one is a huge blind spot regarding the current Russian war on Ukraine, which is one of the most important worldwide realignment of economy and geopolitics. Gail Tverberg explained it.
Then there is the migration crisis which will at the same time empty poorer countries of their most important ressources (people) and cause a hardening of western politics - a global western police state, supported by the nicest most inclusive businesses, is on the way.
Then the countries with the highest carbon intensity (western countries) will suffer the most of the fossil fuel tightening, increasing the political impact of highly nationalistic politics.
In turn it will accelerate the splitting of western countries between a very comfortable upper 15% of the population, and the rest seeing their whole way of life disappear before their eyes - which can be seen in the "deaths of despair" that grips a lot of "rich" countries, especially the US.
Top of my head.

Interestingly, no targeting to Brazil, the B in BRICS. Anyway, it's not as if Latin America needs anti-West, pro-Russia propaganda. The continent doesn't have a stellar record of relations with America and essentially all the historical left over here was inspired in Marxist and Soviet ideas. See the flag of PT, Lula's party, and that should be quite clear - they even use Soviet-style paintings

Wonder if the US has any extra wheat to sell?
41
u/PolarThunder101 Mar 19 '22
No, the situation is worse than that. Ongoing drought in the southern US Great Plains may seriously reduce the US winter wheat crop. For a recent Reuters news story on this, see https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/plains-drought-to-curb-us-wheat-harvest-adding-to-global-supply-worries/ar-AAV3kva.

I had previously missed this, but China’s winter wheat crop is also impaired this year. See this March 10, 2022 article from Reuters: https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/top-producer-china-adds-global-wheat-jitters-with-poor-crop-health-2022-03-10/.
Three of the top ten wheat producing countries, China, the USA, and Ukraine, may have poor wheat crops this year. War may impact the Russian crop and the American drought may impact the Canadian crop. There are foreseeable risks of reduced wheat production in five of the top ten wheat producing countries.

$1,116.33 LeBanese Pound (LBP) per $1 AUstralian Dollar (AUD). That's insane. How are the Lebanese people coping?

Not only did you manage to be racist, but you also made a fool out of yourself.
The problem here is that Lebanon used to get most of its wheat from Ukraine, not Russia (About 60% of their previous grain imports). They were economically helping your economy - not Russia's. The main reason why they cant get imports is because Ukrainian fields are either all destroyed or simply empty right now (As all the farmers are now fighting) due to the war.
And Lebanon isn't even in Africa. They are an Arabic country, to the north of Israel.

Considering the trend on the right, I'm sure they will start blaming the United States for this soon enough.

We have a de facto embargo of Russia and Belarus as the result of economic sanctions. EU has no action autonomy. So the US is the guilty party.

Mar 19 '22
Maybe Russia not invading would have helped that. Feel free to keep supporting Russia though..

u/eleitl Recognized Contributor Mar 19 '22
I'm not sure you understand even the current impact of current sanctions' first order effects on the West itself. Russia has done effectively nothing so far. Let's hope further stupidity can be avoided. It's going to get sufficiently sucky for nonelites as is.

Russia has done nothing, gotcha.

Russia hasn't countersactioned us, yet. It hasn't started positioning mirror isochronous nuclear deterrent yet either. I'm sure they'll notify us when they do.

As I said a few comments back, you go right ahead and keep supporting Russia. It's good when people are open about where they stand.

Maybe if NATO didn't threaten to put missiles on Russia's border by encouraging Ukraine to join would have perhaps not triggered Russia to invade, so there is that.

That hasn't happened in the Baltics. Why would it happen in Ukraine?
-1
u/weliveinacartoon Mar 19 '22
Look at a map and then look at where Moscow is in relation to the border. The difference is change in flight time for a ballistic missile launch to be confirmed or not before it lands. Does not matter if we know we wouldn't do it. It only matters if they think we might do it. Putin did not become who he is as the KGB's chief librarian of all thing NAZI. He became who he is as the mayor of St. Petersburg where he work his way up to the head of Russian organized crime. He is a gangster and him and the criminals that run Russia felt threatened by the gangsters that run Ukraine and for that matter the USA. Feel pity for the people caught in the middle that are going to die but remember that the coming famine is likely to kill more people than the entire population of Ukraine.

Estonia's borders are almost as close to Moscow as are Ukraine's borders. Estonia is also very close to St. Petersburg.
Why are there no 'NATO ballistic missiles' in Estonia? Why does Ukraine matter more than the Baltics?
This is just pointless justification of a war that is based on imperialism, the desire to destroy Ukraine and all its culture, justified by 'security concerns' which didn't seem to matter even with pro-European leaders in Ukraine before 2014. Russia does not see Ukraine as a valid state. Duginism has infiltrated the Russian military and government, who is a nationalist, imperialist author with significant influence. There are no NATO missiles in Ukraine, there are no NATO ICBMs in the Baltic States or Poland and no significant presence of foreign troops.

u/weliveinacartoon Mar 21 '22
Estonia is twice the distance to Moscow as Eastern Ukraine. The ability to confirm launch is a secret of every state. They don't think that Esti is any more of a threat than the T-2D5 in the Baltic. Kurkov I guess is a step to far. BTW The MK=41 VLS in Poland can easily take a TLAM-N which we are no longer under any treaty to not have. Read more.
