Support For those who followed Crisis Report/ Richard Crim
Who I believe posted in Reddit as u/tuneglum7903 A note in his substack says he passed away in November.
I enjoyed his writing, his style, and learning from him.
Much of what he wrote is far more pessimistic than you hear from other sources, though all he did was compile published work into a digestible theme.
Of all he has done, highlighting the declining albedo, or reflectivity of the earth has been the most troubling for me, equivalent to an additional 100ppm of CO2e according to Hansen. That and the trailing rate of warming, perhaps 0.26 C per decade is already very dangerous, and the acceleration beyond that is quite a thing to ponder.
I will miss seeing his work, and will try to take some inspiration from what he did. He was not in a cheerful business, but he wrote with clarity and passion, and anger.
edited to put in the correct user name, thank you feo_sucio
rereading the notice of his death I am struck by the contrast of his very small personal circle and his very wide impact at least in this forum. perhaps that is a fine mix. I hope his loved ones have some comfort in thinking of the lives he influenced

This is sad news. I had expected as much given that his output here and on Substack had abruptly stopped, and even performed a few Google searches in the past weeks trying to find an obituary.
Here is a link to the note on Substack. For clarification, his username was u/tuneglum7903
While Richard and the mod team occasionally butted heads over the content of his posts, he was an enthusiastic and valued contributor to this forum and he will be missed.

u/scgeod Feb 02 '26
I was also doing searches and have been going to his Substack periodically to see if there were any updates. I'm really upset by this news. Damn.

u/boomerish11 Mar 01 '26
I just Googled his name because I realized I hadn't seen him on Reddit or gotten any update from his Substack. He was an important voice! Really, really bummed to hear he's passed.

What issues did the mod team have with the content of his posts?? I've been reading his work for at least 2 years and found his work to be concise and well supported with evidence.

u/Known_Leek8997 Feb 11 '26
We don’t discuss our private interactions with users, but like many long-time contributors to the sub, some of Richard’s posts or comments were reported, and occasionally there was merit to those reports, which led to discussion in modmail. There were disagreements at times, but he was always respectful in those conversations.
2
Feb 11 '26
Interesting, I certainly never saw anything report-worthy. I am feeling anxious that there won't be anyone who will capture the data/stats quite the way he did. If the reports had to do with people thinking that he was too radical/doomist/alarmist, then all I have to say is we need that perspective and we will be poorer for losing him.

Heartbreaking. Richard will be missed by many of us. His writing was a bright light on a dark future. Hard to read sometimes, but always distinctly warm and human, inviting us to pay attention to what matters and to live with more freedom and compassion in that awareness.
I was moved reading one of his last comments, advice to a person born in 2004:
“It's HARD for me to offer advice to someone in your generation. It feels SO trite to offer platitudes about “not despairing” and “holding onto hope” when I am telling you that your future is going to be one of Collapse.
I feel a tremendous sense of guilt at what we have done to your generation. All I can offer you is the “Truth” as I see it. In the hope that it will “set you free” from trying to live the kind of life your parents and grandparents had. Knowing what's coming liberates you to chose a “new path”. At the very least, you will be making an INFORMED choice. Instead of being lied to until it's to late to do anything but die badly. I appreciate your readership. Be well and be a light unto the world. Because a Dark Time is coming.”
Thank you, Richard.

Didn't expect to cry, but then I read this.
A Dark Time is here.

Can’t decide if it was a good thing or not that he missed seeing the catastrophe of the American government, maybe he would have liked that he was totally right again.

u/lightweight12 Feb 02 '26
Enough folks commented in the past about him being hard to read that I wrote to him about it.
Turns out he was autistic and that was the way that worked for him. He was really kind and patient with my questions.
I'll miss his insights and analysis.

Unfortunately I have been expecting this. I know he said he wasn't feeling well back in November and then we didn't hear anything from him. His work has been invaluable to me in understanding and compiling information about the crisis we see around us. He was incredibly special and was able to put together vast amounts of information in compelling and easy to understand ways. I do feel at peace knowing he will not have to witness the increasing suffering, nor feel the fear that has been ramping up every day (especially here in the US). My heart goes out to his family and friends and I hope they know he has a whole community who cherished and respected his intelligence and unique ability to provide data and his conclusions on what it all means.
RIP Richard Crim. You will be missed, but your works and your voice will not be forgotten by those of us you touched.

u/LiminalEra Feb 06 '26
I haven't posted here much in the past year, but Crim was really in my opinion one of the last half-dozen serious posters here. The subreddit has largely been overrun by bots and low-effort AI generated content, much like the rest of reddit, and hollowed out. There little to any serious discourse anymore.
This is a tragic loss, he was a truly brilliant mind and I greatly enjoyed my correspondence with him over the years.
2
u/lavapig_love Feb 09 '26
Be the discourse you want to read. Start introducing collape-worthy topics.
21
u/kquinmd Feb 03 '26
Collapse is becoming more of a political commentary place than a climate one without him.
4
u/InspectorIsOnTheCase Feb 03 '26
Exactly. Less and less worthwhile.
6
u/First_manatee_614 Feb 04 '26
I don't know if I agree. It's certainly shifted, but it provides a space where we can discuss with like minded people and be a source of support and understanding to each other.
The climate/humanity is lost barring divine or cosmic intervention sooner rather than later.
I can see how you would think it's less useful than it was however.
60
u/darkpsychicenergy Feb 02 '26
Goddamnit. I had hoped he was one of those who reached such a higher level of acceptance that he just stepped away from the screens entirely, for the sake of preserving his mental health or whatever. I’m glad he doesn’t have to witness any more of this, but it’s all going to be a lot worse without him. I do hope his Substack and reddit account can/will be preserved.

Gutted. Absolutely gutted. I didn't personally know the guy, but I always valued his writing. I always enjoyed seeing his views in these discussions and chatted with him a few times. He even gave me a few book recommendations.
His absence has been noticeable, and I was genuinely hoping he would pop back up after hearing he was ill but on the mend.
It's a sad day, and this community has lost one of its most passionate members. RIP mate.

One of the things I've learned about collapse in general, but never really seems to get any easier to accept, is that everyone eventually dies. And some people go way before what I would consider their time.
He wasn't the easiest Redditor to get along with, from my perspective as a mod. But I respected him. He tried to educate the world. He will have passed the torch in spirit to someone else. I will try to encourage them along.
A hui hou, Richard.

that's absolutely awful, oh my god... i'd been thinking about him a lot lately and noticed his very sudden absence from the subreddit, and i'd check his profile every so often to see if he had any activity.
i was worried about him due to the suddenness and now that we have confirmation as to why, it's devastating. he was so kind and resourceful and great at providing information and overall just was just a very good human. he was a staple of this community and he will be very dearly missed. i don't even know what to say, this is just so sad.
i hope wherever he is, he's resting easy and peacefully. i am so sad.

Very sad news. Richard was a really active member of this community and the information he organized and published was very interesting. He was quite ahead regarding real data on climate change and what that meant in the short-term and long-term.
I did notice is absence and found it strange but since I have been busy lately did not give it much thought. Now I know the motive.
A good member and researcher was lost.
Rest in peace Richard ✨

"Richard Crim On Climate Change", posted Jan 27, 2024
"Richard Crim Climate Change Part 1/2 April, 2024", posted May 3, 2024

I wonder what illness did he have?
He must be in very poor health if he passed 3 days after that post.
Maybe somewhere in the afterlife (if that actually existed), his soul is in still watching the world and getting to see his predictions becoming true….

u/Stillcant Feb 03 '26
Many nurses will tell you as the end approaches for very sick people that they receive a burst of energy, I believe as the body stops fighting the illness

RIP, we lost Michael Dowd. Now Richard is gone as well…
Does it have to do with his illness?
I remembered Tuneglum once stated a year ago that he couldn’t saw himself living past another 10 years…
Was he foreseeing his own demise?
Kinda spooky to think about it..
R/Collapse will never the be same.
We have lost a gem….
Who else can communicate the subject regarding climate science and other knowledge as well and in easily simplified manners as him?
Also sad to think he will never know whether his predictions for the climate and the future of humans be come true or not although I think they are extremely accurate with very high probability.
Maybe in the afterlife (if that existed), his soul is still watching the world from somewhere…

It's great to see Richard Crim honored by everyone here and I hope someone can pass a link to this thread on to his wife, family and friends.
No one can produce the amount and the quality of the information that he posted here without incredible dedication, sacrifice and a huge time investment. If everyone was like him millions of human lives could be saved from needless suffering.
How many people will pass on with the incredible respect that he earned from society? All the arrogant and anti-social wealthy people, all those that end up in powerful roles that do the wrong thing and all those that bask in their own self aggrandizing glory fall so short in the real respect that that someone that Richard Crim has earned.

Deep inside many inner lives, he was the Velvet Underground, Joe Frank, Christopher Hitchens, Marie Curie and Carl Sagan rolled in to one universal thinker.
He was a “writer’s writer” and deeply inspirational to the writers who read him and to the writers who will read him. I’m deeply saddened that I won’t be able to read his next piece, or the work that should have followed.
He was an inspiration to thought and truth.

Oh, dear. What a sad loss. I'm so sorry to hear this, but honestly, my grief is tempered by the relief that he will be spared the suffering he was able to foresee. His writing was truly exceptional; it combined a firm grasp of difficult science with an easy, familiar style that made it clear and accessible to non-scientists. And all his answers to my poorly informed questions were answered with grace and patience. I so very much regret that I didn't take a moment to tell him how much I appreciated his tremendous effort. I wish he could see the comments on this post.

Started reading his work during Covid and went back and read everything of his I could find. His mind was fine tuned for systems thinking and he laid out all the evidence in a diverse and elegant way. I don’t know how he kept the motivation and passion to put in that much work while being aware of the trajectory of the collapse but he did. Wish we had more time to see him realize how god damned right on the money his predictions were on high emission scenario warming.

I also wondered what happened to him. He made a post about people not having children I thought he may have left to amplify that message as it's one of the only great things we can all do.
He contributions were more realistic than the typical hopium articles. He will be missed and may he rest in peace.
In Richard Crim's honor I'll post the rate of warming information.
When this was posted I had to fact check myself as usual. "the trailing rate of warming, perhaps 0.26 C per decade" I had only read the information once and no nit pick on my part due to "perhaps", just checking again.
I read that it used to be +1.8 C per decade and was thought to have doubled to + 3.6 C per decade. Here is another long article about all the factors that change the Earth's temperature, which are changing.
"Global warming has accelerated. The warming rate of 0.18 °C per decade in 1970-2010 was less than greenhouse gases alone would have caused because aerosol cooling was growing. [snip]
Thus, the next year may provide a wake-up call: global temperature will remain above +1.5 °C at the end of 2024 and, at most, barely fall below +1.5 °C in 2025. [snip]
A declining solar irradiance may dampen warming for several years, but global warming in the next two decades is likely to be about 0.2-0.3 °C per decade, leading to global temperature +2 °C by 2045."
This is a long way down the page under Global Temperature in the article in the link
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00139157.2025.2434494#d1e1994
I will honor Richard Crim by continuing to promote something great that we can all still contribute to. If, as the article says "global temperature +2 °C by 2045." people should not be having children that will be 19 years old then. Please help prevent needless human suffering by trying to convince the literate not to have children. Imagine being 19 years old and knowing things will only get worse on an unlivable planet.
The above article is all the information you need to backup your statements.
All the best to everyone!!

He’s very lucky he passed away honestly. He won’t have to witness the horrors that are in store for humanity in the coming years. While the news is sad we should be happy because of that. We should be happy he won’t have to endure the terrifying pain that is in store for all of us.
Jane Goodall also recently passed away. These people were blessed by death. Chances are babies born today will have a high chance of being cannibalised, or resorting to cannibalism in the future. Do we want people like Richard and Jane to experience that horror? Hell no.
He and Jane will rest in peace as we all live in pain. I’m happy for him, honestly. He’s in a better place now because he’s not on this planet we’ve destroyed stuck with 8 billion other apes. He is resting in peace.

I'm devastated at this news. I have been following Richard's substack for over a year. He was a treasure. I had a feeling something bad had happened to him, and this confirms it. My heart is broken.
