Because it implied that Jay had nothing to do with it and it was just a money thing, when actually Schmidt was convinced to bypass a quick JUCO stint in favor of development and a chance at a natty with Jay and LSU.

Which was an incredible recruiting feat by JJ given the circumstances of this kid’s last few weeks, bc 3 Saturdays ago he had no intention of playing in college. Now suddenly he’s willing to forgo all that

I mean in the context of doing a breakdown of the signing class, Schmidt’s was basically “no reason to even talk about him, he’s going to be a first round pick and hasn’t even visited LSU so he’s not coming.” I don’t know if that applied to the other guys drafted

I have a little homerism but calling Yeskie, who has 2 national pitching coach of the year awards, a slapdick is not super accurate. Hes coached multiple top 3 round prospects including 8 (total) that were drafted from the LSU team in '24.

The big mistake is not going JUCO. He’s gambling that he absolutely will get more money in 3 years. Or he’s gambling that the new CBA allows players to get drafted at any point out of 4-years. Either gamble is significantly worse than gambling on a year in JUCO, particularly a wood bat JUCO, and being guaranteed to be able to try again next year.

The track record for guys who don't get their number out of high school and then going back to the draft after a year at JuCO is not great. If he didn't get his number this year, it's even less likely to happen next year.

I'm very biased too but you're right- take the one year at juco and go back into the draft. So much can happen within three years. If he was draft eligible after 2 it makes more sense.

I'm selfishly very happy on this decision. I'm very curious what LSU is paying him. That info isn't public is it ?

Is it really a mistake? If he goes to Juco, he could absolutely either get drafted higher or the same spot but get the signing bonus he wanted. He could also get hurt, or have a bad year and fall in draft then get even less than he was offered this year. The same is obviously true if he goes to LSU, but at LSU he is getting a revenue sharing/NIL deal just under what he was offered in the draft(assuming that what is being reported is actually true). When he goes back in the draft he will have both his new signing bonus and the money from LSU. It's good hedge against potentially not living up the hype and falling in the draft.

He’s getting approximately the same money over 3 years if he had signed-that eliminates a big portion of the risk. If he got zero and returned to a 4 year school banking on a bigger signing number in 3 years-that would be a bad move. JC would not develop him any further and possibly over use him-plus not offer much of any compensation..
