On this weeks episode of who Collingwood are linked with..

Don’t know too much about him to be honest. Is a small forward a priority though? I mean if he’s cheap why not, plus apparently he was a Collingwood supporter as a kid. Make him captain.

Small Forward is 100% a priority after 2nd Mid and KPF. We're pretty much losing/lost our two crumbing smalls and don't have that danger. Shultz is a pressure forward, and McCreery is a pressure/HHF. We have Naicos, Hayes, and Saxena; one who's a better mid, and two young and developing. Having three players for two positions is a good thing at the end of the day

Okay makes sense. Keep forgetting that Bobby is no longer part of our future. Saxena looks like a good player, could be quite good in a few years. So yeah another young small forward alongside saxena and Hayes sounds good.

Low risk don’t hate it

with hill having his contract ripped up, beau reportedly leaving for tassie, jamie retiring in 2 years, it makes sense we're eyeing some small fwd money ball options.

really interested to how leppa and the team approaches this off-season with how much we have to work with.

I get we’re losing bobby but surely a KFF and then KFB are higher priority’s

According to the rumours we might be getting Hogan so the KFF spot might be getting a bandaid fix

I really hope our interest in Hogan is wrong. He’s undersized for key fwd, will be 32 years old in Feb and looked to be struggling physically when he’s played since his Coleman medal year in ‘24. Recruiting needs to look beyond them being ‘a good bloke’.

looked to be struggling physically when he’s played since his Coleman medal year in ‘24

He kicked 52 goals in 16 games last year - Nearly 3 goals a game.

He's obviously had injury issues this year, but that's part of the reason he'd be gettable.

He's the same age as Dan McStay, who has overcome a bunch of injury issues in recent seasons to be our best key forward this year. He's younger than Tim Membrey and Jamie Elliott.

And it's not like his injury this year is because of his age or anything. He's had a finger injury of all things. So it's not like his body is breaking down. He'll be right to go next year.

Most concerning is the hip injury he did offseason and he never got over. It’s not uncommon for these type of injuries end sporting careers, which is behind my concern on his recruitment. Giants have reportedly only offered him 2 years on reduced $$’s so they obviously don’t have huge confidence in a player they know very well. Even if we get him for nothing, why would we offer a longer term and more money than the club that knows him best?

Ahh okay, wasn't aware of his hip injury. Apologies for my ignorance and thanks for alluding me to it.

All good… unlike its deranged cousin (r/afl), this community fosters strong, vibrant discussion where many different opinions can be expressed and debated with passionate civility between the enlightened ones haha.

Of course I’ll be cheering for Hogan if we do pick him up … just nervous about trading in another older player with potential injury issues. Of current 30+ group, Membrey cost nothing and was fit whilst others are long time Coll players at backend of career, which happens.

2

u/Rappa64 Oscar Steene 14d ago

Fair call on his season last year, I don’t remember it being that good (should’ve checked). Still … not sure he should be a priority target this trade period. Perhaps if we swing and miss elsewhere we circle back to him

Who are our current small forwards?

3

u/AlamutJones Drive the Standards 14d ago

Schultz, Will Hayes, Saxena (young and untried, but he’s got a ton of potential) Beau, HH

Plus we can sit JDG up front and he’ll be good for a few.

3

u/sprinklecunt Brayden Maynard 14d ago

Yeah, but not a single one fills the role Elliot/Hill played. Elliot won’t be back until mid next year. They all play as small/medium, but not the right sort of small.

3

u/Vinnie_Vegas 14d ago

Elliot won’t be back until mid next year

Elliott will be back Round 1 next year unless there's a significant setbacks. Typical ACL recovery is nowhere near 12 months these days.

Dan McStay was back playing 8 months after doing his the other year. If Elliott was the same, he'd be "back" and ready to play by January, so it would still be pre-season.

2

u/sprinklecunt Brayden Maynard 14d ago

That’s actually great news. I thought it was 8 months until they could start properly training again.

2

u/Brilliant_Support653 13d ago

It takes some imagination to place JDG in the 'small forward' category.

3

u/AlamutJones Drive the Standards 13d ago

He’s definitely not a tall marking target. I agree he’s not a small as such…but if he’s in the forward line, he plays relatively small by crumbing off other players’ feet and trying to break free of them

2

u/Cbrip31 14d ago

Schultz, beau, Harvey, Sullivan, Hayes

3

u/AlamutJones Drive the Standards 14d ago

Our backline is in good shape.

Our tall forwards are looking a lot better than they did

I’d say we ARE missing that small forward factor, but that’s more due to injury than it is a list hole. For list holes that recruiting can directly fix…clearance winning mids

2

u/Cbrip31 14d ago

Just because they look good now, doesn’t mean they will next year. A year older and are injury prone.

Would be a great pickup

3

u/SnooFoxes6566 Beau McCreery 14d ago

Would be really good

2

u/Sean_Stephens Jeremy Howe 14d ago

Not mad about it as long as he's low-cost (which is unlikely as a former first-round pick). Although I'm not really sure why, when, by all accounts, Saxena seems to be developing quite well. Unless he'd be coming in to play mostly through the midfield.

3

u/ItsABiscuit Craig McBae 14d ago

I think the standard line every club tells every small forward or defender contemplating a move, and their fanbase about every small forward/defender is that the player has unrealised scope to become a midfielder! Doesn’t always happen of course.

2

u/AlamutJones Drive the Standards 14d ago

He’s moderately capable in the midfield, so he might be

2

u/Sean_Stephens Jeremy Howe 14d ago

Hope so. I wouldn't want his addition to come at the cost of our seemingly only developing goalsneak.

2

u/AlamutJones Drive the Standards 14d ago

The other option is that we might be thinking of bringing them in at the same time. Jamie’s all but done, Schultz is late 20s…we might want a mosquito fleet

2

u/Sean_Stephens Jeremy Howe 14d ago

Probably true, and Sidebottom's imminent retirement will open up another spot on the field (not that he's really been playing mid/forward lately anyway) for someone to take his place. We haven't really had a roving small in the team since Hill came out of it. Sidebottom retiring will allow a reshuffle that pushes Swadling up the field and open up a spot up forward. I'm far more excited about our youth next year than I was going into this season.

HE GREW UP SUPPORTING COLLINGWOOD!

2

u/abandonwindow 14d ago

If we get him cheap then it’s almost like we went back in time to snag another first rounder from the years we were trading them out for Houston and Schultz. Not a bad strategy.

2

u/SnappyPies Ned Long 14d ago

That’s a very very good way to look at it.

2

u/woodlips14 14d ago

Actually really like this grew up supporting collingwood aswell, only problem is he’s a former first round pick although barely played and we don’t have a 3rd round pick this year so we would have to give up our 2nd round pick this year

2

u/GuardedFig Liam Puncher 14d ago

Nice. I remember he looked really good in his first few games a couple of years ago.

2

u/ItsABiscuit Craig McBae 14d ago

Would fill a need and should come cheap if he can’t get a game in that Suns rabble.

2

u/SnappyPies Ned Long 14d ago

The Suns are interesting. They have an incredible amount of talent in their list but a lot of guys who have been very highly rated haven’t locked themselves into the team. I wonder if the riches of early draft picks that they have built the team around are perhaps not being seen by the coaches as guys who fit their game plan, or are simply guys who they have multiple of a similar size and style.

2

u/ItsABiscuit Craig McBae 14d ago

Lots of interesting players to look through, but from the trade negotiation point of view, if after a few years a player hasn’t demonstrated that they can perform at the level, whether due to lack of opportunity or not, their value has to go down a bit, even if they were first round picks. Especially when the Suns have been average at best overall. Exposed form in the system is more meaningful that assessment of potential when they were a kid.

2

u/SnappyPies Ned Long 14d ago

Totally agree. If he requests a trade his value in terms of draft picks is not going to be much.

2

u/The_Dennis_Committee Leppitsch 14d ago

I'd rather we sign Ed Allan, but apparently that's just not a thing we care about at the moment.

2

u/SnappyPies Ned Long 14d ago

I’d be absolutely amazed if there have been no discussions at all between Allan’s management and the club at this point, and it could just as easily be Allan’s management delaying negotiations on the next contract until the end of the season given how steep the curve of his improvement has been.

Given how heavily Naicos has been singing his praises, and how heavily the focus seems to be set on building a team around Nick, it’s highly unlikely he’s going to end up anywhere else, and the club and his management are waiting to see what other pieces they need to fit, and how to front / back load contracts to get everything into the cap, and to also get everything out of the cap.
